About this Two - Fer visit:
Joseph L Block anchored off the mouth of the Iron River in WI Apr 2, 2023 20:30 - 16:10 waiting for Two Harbors to load iron ore pellets. The weather began to turn ugly, knowing they would not be at the Two Harbors dock before the storm, picked up anchor and headed to Duluth to take shelter in the Harbor from the storm. They arrived Duluth Entry Apr 03, 2023 @ 18:01 for CN dock to wait on weather, sharing the dock with the CLS Assiniboine. They departed the Duluth Entry Apr 05, 2023 @ 20:34 from CN heading for anchor outside Duluth to wait to load at Two Harbors CN.
Following closely behind the Block was the Joyce L VanEnkevort, they arrived at the Duluth Entry Apr 03, 2023 @ 18:10 for Fraser Shipyards, getting some service and waiting out the storm.
They arrived at the Fraser dock @ 16:10. They departed Duluth Entry Apr 7, 08:17 AM from Fraser Shipyards heading to the lake to wait for the Cort to depart the BNSF Dock

Despite what some people think, Lake Superior can whip up a pretty nasty storm. I was in a storm on an oil tanker the Arthur Simard 46 years ago. The Arthur Simard was about 550 feet long. I loved watching her climb the middle of the 3 sisters wave, then dive into the 3rd wave. The bow would break the wave and 2 walls of water would crash down onto the deck and it was completely under water. We had spent the winter months running from Montreal to the east coast of Canada. Superior can be just as rough as the North Atlantic on the east coast of Canada.

I find this to be as interesting as watching a Space Shuttle launch. Any of hundreds of things could go wrong at any instant. It pleases me that the people are there to see 'their' ships come and go, and the ships respond with a blast. (Don't know how anyone gets any sleep at night.) Hats off to Duluth and the shipping industry. God bless America.

Hi, from New Zealand. Question, why do these ships have blunt bows unlike most ships. Here in New Zealand it is still very hot and at present still in autumn. Is it snow melt yet in Canada? Thank you for sharing.
@PaulScinocca
@PaulScinocca Жыл бұрын
Great question! It's all about hauling capacity. With the round bow they can carry more cargo. It's less efficient for fuel, since these are lakers, meaning they are designed for the Great Lakes, the fuel efficiency is surpassed by the profit on the extra cargo capacity

I’m planning on making the long trek to Duluth from NC sometime this summer! Can you recommend any sources of info on the “must see” places related to Great Lakes ships in that area? This place has been on my bucket list for a long time! I’m retired after 41 years on the railroad, and recently lost my bride after a long illness, so here we go! There’s zero chance you’ll see me there with that white stuff on the walkway though! Ha!

Hey Tom, sorry to hear about your wife. Split Rock is a great place to visit. The Lake Superior Maritime Museum has a lot of great items inside, the Irvin has a great tour that you can take on board, Two Harbors, you can see ore boats getting loaded very clearly. The LSRM would be of interest for you, being you were a railroader. I hope I have helped some. Have a great trip. it's awesome up here.

@@PaulScinocca Thanks, Paul. There's a group of us here in Green Bay and Manitowoc that are hoping she sails again. If that doesn't work out, and she goes to scrap, we would like to rescue her pilot house and place it facing Lake Michigan as a tribute to her being the last laker built in Manitowoc. If you get any info to her fate, please let me know. I can send you my email if you'd like. Jim Nelson.
