When Rick is not confident, he putts harder and scares the basket. When I'm not confident, I put slower because the basket scares me.

When Ricky was first on tour, he was super uncomfortable on camera or using a mic, but now he is up there with the best at explaining his points, and has gotten entertaining as well. Just as impressive as his disc golf improvement for sure.

Ricky is such a great role model and ambassador to the sport. I'm always rooting for him (and a couple of other guys). I saw him about 10 years ago at DeLa practicing his putt until it was almost too dark to see the basket. We were the only two people out there. I was up on 6 throwing drives. I could tell it was Rick. His putt is unique and his dedication is unquestionable. Love the guy. Thanks for this Uli. Paul's tutorial (years ago) on how to put a floaty upshot next to the pin was a tool that I still pull out regularly. All the best to you two huge mentors.

Interesting, Ricky seems to be agreeing his putts are nose down, I've seen him in the past in interviews suggest they aren't but it just looks like they are. Great stuff, Uli, you should mess around with some putting strokes with the tech disc, you'd be surprised when using an arm lift motion (spush putt) how much the nose angle just automatically pairs with the launch angle based on how high the apex you are aiming for is. For example, Ricky's first putt was more of a small rainbow than a line drive, imo, and it was probably like somewhere around -20 nose and +20 launch angle and that's why the apex looks like it's parallel to the ground-ish, the nose and launch angle cancel out into that flat looking apex with a decending glide because it's no longer ascending. His second one looks like he just does the same motion but lifting the arm more drastically for a steeper launch angle but since the stroke is similar the nose angle similarly pairs with the launch angle, so it might've been something like -35 nose +30 launch. When going with a steeper launch angle like that with that type of arm lift stroke it's easy for the nose angle to automatically come out a bit more negative than the launch angle is positive, so it dives a bit harder after the apex. I made a vid doing different putting strokes and then trying to replicate those same strokes with a tech disc to see what the angles generally were likely to be and it was pretty interesting!

I hope we can one day get to a place with the sport where we understand the actual mechanics of the putt as a matter of science rather than a matter of a bunch of putters personal experiences. Some of the best advice we can get right now is from a putter like Rick, but it would be a game changer I think to really understand what spin actually does to the flight of a putt, how important is glide, etc. It's all based on feel / intuition currently and taking it to that next level some day would be a game changer. Steph curry might be the greatest 3 point shooter, but there's also a lot more sports science professionals employed by NBA teams to help their players achieve peak performance based on data and how that data can be used to achieve real outcomes.

I appreciate your sentiment, but it's not a "rather than" situation. Science AND personal experiences make the difference. Think about different models of atoms in physics and how they all separately contribute to our overall understanding. Cheers! I hope this is useful for you.

This is a good video. Ricky covers a lot of things succinctly it took me a couple of seasons to figure out. My putting got a lot better this year going with the "slam it in there and deal with the results" approach. I wasn't having a lot of luck with touch, but powering everything up lets you figure out how to back it off with putting. If you are guessing and trying to guide the disc it's more of a crap shoot when you add power. If you can go from A to B in a line it's easier to work up and down with more touch than accounting for side to side movement. Paul needs some media training on hands. I feel like I've just walked out of a convenience store and there's a guy standing there vaping and I accidentally make eye contact and he decides to give me a lecture on some conspiracy theory. It's a real uncomfortable energy from his body language and doesn't line up with the words coming out of his mouth..

I heard you guys talk about how people try to emulate Ricky’s style or others try to emulate Simon’ s style or Uli’s style but what I am coming to realize in the short time I’ve been playing is that comfort equals confidence when it comes to putting. I think finding what’s comfortable for you first and then seeing or finding someone who does it similarly, like holds the disc the same way, or brings their arm down to a certain level the same as you or spins it a certain way or whatever it may be, and then emulate them after you have found the fundamental movements and positions that are most comfortable for you. Forcing a style that may not be compatible with your personal body mechanics may end up being very frustrating and less successful.

Nose gets down from pushing up on the back of the disc. It’s entirely due to the putting form of low to high pulling the disc from under you.

So when he talks about getting spin with his thumb, is it him adding more pressure to the flight plate with his thumb? Or does he actually try to throw his thumb at the basket (if that makes sense?)
