During my practice swings, I get it. As soon I step to the ball, I'm right back to swinging with my arms. Very frustrating...I won't give up though.

So quit trying to be the hero. Hitting hard does not work. You know that. So to stop doing it you need to do something new and different. You are not good at it at first. So get good at it otherwise nothing will change. When people have a good practice swing then it changes with the ball that is them trying to hit the ball. I am not hitting anything. So you need to find an ending point into your follow through. You need to make this more important that hitting the ball. This is what I have been teaching for now 33 years. Unfortunately, I don't give this ending point away on YT. So you need to find one. You hit the top then go to the ending. You do this slow and easy. If you are thinking about point B you are not thinking about hitting the ball. Watch: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXrTZZycgNqNf9k So stick to 50% power as you do this. I guarantee swinging at 50% you will not hit it much less than your best shot. You may even hit it longer. Just need to try something new and different. As you do, you will get it in no time but you have to stick with it. Most give up and go right back to their old swing that doesn't work.

Friend if you're new to Pauls teachings believe me.....they work! I've been following him for a couple of years now and my game changed dramatically. My big slice is gone and I'm hitting it further. Things I've started doing that he teaches.....2 points in the swing....point A and point B. A=top of the backswing......B=the end of the follow through. just think those two things hitting "through" the ball, not at it. Next, stay loose like a wet noodle. Next, turn those hips...it really works! I got immediate results.....straighter and longer. My partners said "who is this guy!" I told them about Paul. Good stuff!

Mr. Paul, I tried your techniques today on the range with driver. It works!!!! As consistent pull to pull hook hitter I decided to use your idea of losing the arms and hit with the legs and hips. I even stopped turning my shoulders right of the target at address in order reduce my pulls. Lined up square with feet, and shoulders as you demonstrated, hoping the club face would be square at ball impact. I won't say I hit every drive straight but those that went off-line were not as severe and just outside my imagined fairway. It does feel strange to turn off the arms and I thought this will not produce much distance. If fact the distance was there and as you say it felt like an effortless swing. I haven't mastered it, but I am going to continue to lose the arms and turn the hips. Hopefully I can do this technique with the irons for my trip the range later this week. Thank you again for the great lessons. Well done sir!!!!

Very good. Glad you tried it. Fixing pulls and pull hooks is 5 mins. to fix if that. So easy. Just turn the arms off and fire the body first then simple physics will shallow the club. You need to watch this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maDKqplsis97bbc You are on your way. Yes, hitting will not get you any more distance. If anything you will loose distance and you will lose consistency. Thanks for the support. I have seen many people hover. I am totally fine with that as Nicklaus and Norman did that. A lot of the time people do it wrong though. Be careful. You are just hovering it slightly off the ground behind the ball. I have literally seen people wiggling it back and forth about a foot behind the ball which is not would I would suggest.

Yup, one of the hardest things for amateurs to get, is leave the arms and hands out of the swing until late as possible. If and when they get to the place where they're holding them back too long, ONLY then can they start to release them a little eariler little by little until they find that sweet spot. The other HUGE thing I see with many amateurs is they don't get their weight to the lead side SOON enough. They usually wait until the top of their swing, and by then it's WAY too late for most people. As soon as they drag that club back waist at the latest, I would start having them move their center mass a little toward the target, but keep the backswing going. They just don't understand to create a whip like lag, their lower body moves forward a little while the upper body is moving back and up. This separation allows a massive storing of energy. Everybody is a little different, but most don't get their weight moving towards the target soon enough in the sequence.

Yes, this and the next ones to follow are vital. I keep saying it and hopefully people are listening. At 85 you need to just try to speed it up the best you can. My typical student is older and I explain how fast to turn the hips and watch them do it and they barely move them. It is a real effort which is what I am trying to demonstrate in these tips. I just don't think people get how hard and fast or quick they need to move them then train themselves to always drive them this hard. Get this and you get the distance. Keep at it.

Yes, my seniors effort level in their hips is pretty weak. I say they have to do it hard and fast or quick and they barely move. Then I say imagine you are in the street and a bus is coming at you. Thanks, Paul. You are absolutely the best. I have a decades-long ingrained all-arms swing. I have been working on breaking those old bad reflexes via your YT videos and the Body Swing. For the longest time I have found it impossible to overcome my reflex of turning my shoulders simultaneously my hips (i.e. not letting the shoulders lag and be pulled by the hips). Very difficult after so many years. Recently I found some success with a visual/mental trick: At the end of my backswing, I I turn my hips leftward while seeing in my peripheral vision my left shoulder and arm lingering in a stationary position. In other words, I consciously look with my eyes at my left arm/shoulder staying quiet and still while I turn my hips left. It somehow takes my mind off of the hit impulse. The resulting swing is entirely relaxed with passive arms and solid impact. I’m not sure this means anything to anyone but me. But if somebody struggles, as I do, to relax their arms and upper body and lead with the hips tugging the shoulders then it might be worth a try.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
If this works then please keep doing it. I hear this all of the time that people have trouble turning the arms off. To get it you need to stop hitting balls. The ball is the problem. You keep wanting to hit while I am trying to get you to not hit. So do daily practice swings for the next month or two. Get used to the feeling of the hips leading (swing off the ground drill). Also, make sure you get to my follow through positions exactly as I show in The Body Swing. If you do hit balls you do at least 3 practice swings to 1 ball. I would also go to down 50%. Swing easy and you cannot be hitting hard with the arms. So master hitting your shots doing full swings 2/3 of your normal swing speed. Finally, understand that if hitting hard with the arms is not working after years of doing it then it never will. This means you clearly have the concept in your mind of what you are even doing. Mass (club) swinging around an axis (body). If a little kid with minimal arm strength can do it then there is a different way to hit a golf ball which you want to learn no matter what it takes. You are not good at it ... so keep doing it until you get good at it. Too many people trying to be the hero hitting every shot the best they can. This gets them hitting. Why not patty cake it for a while and get good at not hitting. So you are 10-30 yards behind your best shots for a while but who cares. In no time you will get used to it then hit it 10-30 yards past your best shot with a feeling of nothing. Do this and you have a swing for life.

4:30 - Very common pattern, hips and the entire body facing the ball at impact. I'd stand behind them, looking down the target line. Ask them to take the club back to parallel to the ground. I then hold the clubhead in my hand and have them turn their hips toward the target, with a little side bend included. I tug very lightly, hold it there, and ask them to rotate their hips toward the target again. It's like a light bulb turns on for most people. Then I ask them, if I wasn't holding the club, how could you produce a similar effect on your own. It forces them to think and progress ensues. Then you can do the same thing with their club at the top, hold it there while they rotate their hips forward.

Getting the hips to move FIRST is where folks need to go. It's the kinetic chain, same motion as physically "throwing" a golf club, throwing a football or baseball. The lower half moves first, the upper half goes next and the arms follow. The ball is not your target, its the spot "way out there"... and that is where you need to throw towards. Understanding this will get you/us hitting crisp shots 75% of the time until we have engrained it (1 season). Keep pounding this message, Paul! ☺

Great video Paul. Understand the concept, which I first read about in Ben Hogans Five Lessons. I’ve tried many times to put this into practice but find I swing left when I fire my hips first as you suggest, and my divots clearly show an out to in swing path. Follow through is very much extremely low and left, which shows a steep Club descent in to the ball? I think that I may need to ensure that as well as firing the hips first, I may need to make sure my lead left shoulder comes down at the ball (rather than what’s likely a flat shoulder rotation?) at the same time or immediately after I fire the hips? I’m a right handed golfer by the way. Advice will be truly appreciated

This is not what I want you to do. I want you to swing at no more than 50%. If so you will hit it longer and straighter than every with a feeling of nothing. Got to wrap your head around this concept. Get it slow first then into the future speed up only the legs and hips if you want a little more. Let's try again my way and let me know what happens. Should I tilt the lead hip down towards the ball on the backswing and up through my turn to get more whip in the club, or is that too much complication in the swing? I've heard that I should use the ground with the lower body to get more power, but don't want to make things difficult to risk injury.

I show people how to do it and they don't do it. All positions are vital and need to be done exactly as I demonstrate. If you do the grip, set up and 4 position you then look like a pro when you swing. This means you have the right fundamentals so you would be using your legs and hips as the power source not just hitting with arms. So reduce the balls you hit and build the swing. Get the swing ... you get the ball.

Good video. Trick is to move hips fast. Everyone should stress that.

It sure is. It is this initial quick movement. This take understanding and work. This will never happen on it's own if you start as an adult.

Paul.. I need some help. Had a fantastic 10 holes, then randomly shanked. Have been working through them with some success, but still nervous to hit my sand and 56 degree on the course--I get yippy and start to shank again. I'm so nervous I'm going to shank, my body subconsciously opens the face. I've seen your video on standing tall, moving back and it helps, but when I start to think about it on 20-50 yard shots, I can shank just looking at it. I've been shank free for like 2 years and then suddenly BOOM. Almost ready to quit, so frustrated over it.. and I want to play pro someday... what do I do when I am afraid to swing my normal swing that would hit it right? I'm so shanked up right now. Help!

Paul I've been trying to get my hips in front of the ball for months. I occasional get a solid strike but more often than not I'm pulling the ball or topping it. I don't understand why. Can you help? I'm about ready to give up. ☹️

Pulling is hitting with arms. Topping is swinging way too hard. Do you top it swinging easy? Bet you don't. So you need to immediately slow down to 50% cause what you are doing is never going to work. Need to work on hinging and rehinging to loosen your wrists. You get the power through looseness not strength. How else does a 12 year or hit it by you? They are not strong. They are loose. Once you get that you power the swing with the legs and hips. A training aid which has nothing to do with a club, your arms, or a ball. It strictly focuses on the hips. That, in itself, validates what Paul is telling people. As the commercial says, “It’s all in the hips.”

Exactly. That device is amazing. I actually thought of this same thing quite a few years ago but never brought it to market so when my friend showed it to me it was like they were reading my mind. This device is amazing. Get people to feel the hips and get them moving. I would suggest everyone either get one or make on of their own so they can get the the feeling. Here it is for those reading this comment: www.paulwilsongolf.com/speed-core

You need to let me know what you are doing or where the ball is going. Once I know that I can fix you. Right now you need to do a neutral grip and I teach a taller set up (like short stop position) and a square stance. That is where it all starts and is vital to doing the swing I teach. If you want the fast and easy way to get this which is what I showed the guy in that video follow this: Wrists = Spin (Step 1) kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmXZcoajhN-ehsk kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2mZaYSpidF6qpY kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3mop2p9br9oY5I Body = Direction (Step 2) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIebpoaQZpt1r9U kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJXTmaeeeLZsjK8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2mpqYaQiNJ-e9k (secret tip)

@@paulwilsongolf thanks Paul. Always been a big hitter at the ball. Casting and flipping hands out towards the ball. In to out path, lots of over-draws and hooks and pushes. Now that I've gone back to loosening my arms and wrists and neutral grip, everything feels a lot more relaxed and easier and I'm feeling that snap that you talk about a lot more. Basically hitting at the same distance maybe a little bit shorter than before but it is a lot easier. (I have plenty enough distance anyway). I Can get it to fade I can make it draw. One thing I have noticed is my lower back soreness in the morning has flared up a bit again. Maybe something to do with me approaching 40 and not doing any warm-ups 😂

If you are doing less and hitting it almost as far isn't that a good thing. Once you actually increase the legs and hips you will even up hitting it even farther. As the for the back, be careful not to tilt over too much. Stand tall like a short stop.

An athletic position not a bend over position. So stand up. Sit your rear end on the edge of bar stool. Bend a little so you see the club and ball clearly not your toes. Put your hands together and you are golfing. Just look at my set up.
