Paving ACTIVE Airplane Runways | Posillico Night Shift | NYC Vlog

Welcome to the night shift! In this episode, Aaron and the gang visited with Posillico to catch up with them on a couple asphalt paving projects in Long Island, New York.
The first project took us to the Long Island MacArthur Airport where Posillico was laying down some fresh asphalt on the airport taxiway. Things got rolling right after the last airplane took off for the night, and they had to be completely finished by morning so the morning air travel was not impacted.
In this video we got to see asphalt milling, a tack truck spraying down the tack coat, the crew laying down a fresh layer of beautiful asphalt, and plenty of rolling action. Aaron also explains how the testers use the nuclear gauge (or the little yellow thing with the handle) to test the density of the new asphalt after it’s been rolled with the vibratory rollers.
After we visited the airport paving project, we made a quick pit stop at Posillico’s wash plant, and then headed to a paving project on the interstate.
The interstate paving job was neat because they had a full closure on the interstate, but they weren’t paving the mainline yet. When the BuildWitt crew got there, Posillico was just paving one of the on-ramps.
Something new we learned was how they use GPS to record the location of the existing paint striping on the highway before paving, so they can restripe with ease after the new asphalt is laid down.

Exactly right. When we are exhausted, dehydrated and pouring sweat while paving roads that cannot be closed to traffic and you see so many people giving you dirty looks it can be frustrating. While they pass by in their air conditioned vehicles, it does not occur to them that they only have good roads to drive on because of those people out there busting their butts. (We don't have one of those large crews with guys always standing around. Every one of our guys work their butts off all day long.)

The amount of times I have been yelled at by people for fixing their roads is mind blowing. I have had people throw change at me, m80s, full soda cans, you name it. People really do take road workers for granted and we’re looked at as a inconvenience.

Late reply but Posillico is a union company. Machine operators and laborers are Union. The truck drivers usually are and are hired separately by Posillico but for some reason the company seen in the vid is a non union trucking company. However, to be allowed to work this job they are paid prevailing wage which means union scale + the benefits package all paid outright per hour. Plus they get night differential So these drivers are making somewhere in the ballpark of $90-100 per hour possibly little more depending on job location
