Strange piece. Is there a programmatic element to it?

There is a programmatic element! It's about someone (the horn part) waking up (the beginning piano rhythm is the alarm) and realizing they are all alone and sad. Then they meet someone and love ensues. The relationship starts to go off the tracks and when both the horn and the piano play that opening alarm rhythm again, the horn player is waking up to the fact the relationship won't work. The last section is in 7/8, but if the horn part is written in 2+2+3, the piano part is written in 2+3+2 so it never sounds synced and they are always fighting. Hope this helps!

Thanks -- the "narrative" of the piece just seemed so odd, and it made me wonder whether there was an extra-musical aspect influencing the direction of the musical material.
