I tried that once with a man made moissanite diamond I got on wish for 40.00 it’s real had to take it in and get it tested but was just curious and it’s only worth it as a gift not accrual price value which I was ok with gave it to someone for Christmas in a necklace

How do you spot a fake gem expert? Someone who says you can tell a diamond from a moissanite just by looking.
@brucefulton5 жыл бұрын
Once you know what to look for, you can. Moissanite is double refractive; diamond is not. Look for the railroad tracks at a 45 degree angle into the facets, it's a dead giveaway for moissanite. And, moissanite will usually display some pink and lavender fire that diamond never will.

I'm friends with a Gemologist. He confessed the only way he could discern the difference between a real diamond and a fake is to examine them under a microscope. He's been a Gemologist for at least 40 years and owns a family jewellery business--and he was born in Switzerland....so...I don't know what this guy's talking about.
@durian11110 жыл бұрын
whatever he say, he still can distinguish between diamond and fake, or he wouldn be in business today.

You can learn a lot from this show. I'm amazed at how knowledgeable Rick is in so many areas. Unfortunately, my teenage boys are addicted to a show call "Hardcore Pawn". It features a father, son & daughter team that berate and mock each other as they interract with some of the most hopeless souls imaginable in the burnt out city of Detroit. The show teaches & promotes disrespect in it's rawest form and I curse the day my kids stumbled upon the program. Les Gold & his kids are true Gavones!

He is got it partially right, however diamonds could have a polish girdle too. A polish girdle on a diamond would improve the color of a diamond by a grade and sometimes by two depending which lab does the grading.

Geologist here. Fluid inclusions are the only real reliable way to tell with the newer higher quality fakes out there. Cheaper ones, he is right on the money here. Buy fake.
@najoadifjsodgadksajndsjnfs93189 жыл бұрын
Correct. This is because most modern "fakes" are in fact not fake at all. There is a difference between a synthetic diamond and a fake diamond. Both are relatively worthless compared to natural diamond, but synthetic diamond is none the less "real diamond".

@07gingerkid5 жыл бұрын
As I noticed at least one person mention in the comments for this video, rick is only partially correct which really makes his entire answer/assertion incorrect. The girdle of a diamond can actually be 3 different types: Bruted(rough), Polished(smooth), Faceted(Teeny little facets going around the girdle). Not trying to be a snob but if you take his word as fact then in the future you may dismiss a real diamond as a CZ simply because of his incorrect information.

I’ve been getting those man made diamonds from eBay. They sparkle like crazy and I don’t care if they get lost. They do cut glass, so they’re pretty hard but not diamond hard. Pretty close. They fail the news print test though. Everyone thinks they’re real so that’s fun.

The flush test works every time. Flush the rock down the toilet. If it floats after the flush it's a diamond. If it isn't a diamond it gets flushed away like the crap it is. Try it.

Hugh G. Rection I'm thinking of a 3D printer that can generate the intense heat and pressure that is necessary to create real diamonds.
@timjansen61817 жыл бұрын
GregoryTheGr8ster Actually, you are. Not with a 3D printer, but if you press coal hard enough, it'll become a diamond.
@danteshin62107 жыл бұрын
that is a yes and a no there but your on the right track there... if all depends if that piece of coal has enough of the elements required and has a high enough content of carbon in it ^^_ but your on the right track of thought there... and speaking of 3D printing there is a company working on Printing in Platinum and gold so I think its a few more years before there can do diamonds ^^_

a very simple way is take an eyedropper and splash some water over the stone. If it beads up and clings to the stone grats. If it sheets over the stone, it's fake.

Any suggestions or thoughts on lab created diamonds, I know there are no flaws or inclusions in the lab created ones. Thanks! btw, I absolutely enjoy your show, it is informative and entertaining! thanks again
@ghosthead20088 жыл бұрын
+Mickey Crisp Actually, lab-created diamonds can/will have "flaws", because they are "grown" from real diamonds. The tell, in most cases is, that lab-grown diamonds must have a laser-inscribed, maker's mark, and be fully disclosed as such pre-sale.
@danteshin62107 жыл бұрын
I agree but there have been cases where some non reputable companies have mixed in cut lab created diamonds in with natural ones, and the only true and sure way to know that there lab-created or natural diamonds is to take it to a gemologist or the GIA ( Gemological Institute of America ) there in every major city around the world and they will be able to test and cert it for you. They have the right equipment for that. and there is no way to tell if a diamond is synthetic or natural by touch or eye.
@thommytwotoestimesthree8476 жыл бұрын
I agree with abraham. It's very difficult, or nearly impossible, to certify real from some good fakes. The laboratory can 99.99% assure genuine from fake.

The price fixing is a debatable matter however the argument here is about diamond rarity. I did not see all your videos you suggested however I did see the first one and what that video talks is about SYNTHETIC diamonds, that is two total different things. You also mention that diamonds are mined in large quantities, so I ask you, Do you know how many mines are actually mined today and what percentage of those mined diamonds are actually of gem quality? I am a GIA gemologist and I do have fact
