Because he would have to pay 25-30% commission in any auction, so if he sold it for £120k thats like £84-90k after the commission, Rick would have have known people who would have wanted it and he would have paid 0 commission.

Even if it did sell for $100-120k, you still have to deduct taxes and potentially auction fees from that. If you command a premium above the market value for a product, then don't walk into a pawn shop expecting to make bank.

@HackFuey - Auction houses charge 10% typically. The most they charge is 30% and that's a premium place like Sotheby's and ONLY if the item sells for some very small amount because otherwise it isn't worth their trouble. Obviously you have never dealt with an auction house.

I was watching another episode where a Julius Caesar era coin that was around 2000yrs old was priced at $1500...this coin was from 1800s and goes for upwards of$50000... I don't understand the antique market

I was always confuse by that too. I mean how is the first coins in human history to exist become worth far less then modern days?

Age has nothing to do with the value of a coin. Mintage figures, how many are available in the market and condition are the mitigating factors in the value of a coin.
