The expert doesn't know bikes. The appeal of a Harley is the unique sound of the engine due to the engines design.

@@chicagojonesy google the expert. He is a true Harley expert and a custom bike builder. He knows what hes talking about. And idk what you're talking about with engine sound. I've heard every harley engine back to the late 60s and they all sound the same. Obnoxiously loud. I like certain loud vehicles, such as V8s and diesels, but Harleys are just obnoxious. People only buy them because of the name. If Harley put their name on a crotch rocket, people would buy it because of the name.

The smaller pan is same size as the knuckle. I believe it 62inch? And the knuckle was the first enclosed non flathead Harley. Not the Pan Pan was the first 74 inch non flat head. Just fyi. The UL was a 80 inch flathead and VL was the 74 inch Flathead. And thier was the 45" also The Harley stayed at the 74" until 1980. In 1980 you could get the shovel ( nose cone) in 80 inch. The shovel started in 1965, with the bottom end of the pan and knuckle. In 1970 the lower end was changed to the nose cone. Also this was the first year the vin was on the frame and motor. Prior to this Harley numbers were only on the motor. In 1984 the evo came out ( block head) but the nose remained. The nose cone stayed on past 1987. This means that you could put knuckle heads on a bottom end past 1997. And you could put evo upper on a lower end of a knuckle. And mismatches of all those between. Frame wise you could bolt right in any knuckle to evo engine into a evo frame. And ANY Evo or older engine into a a Panhead frame. Also the UL and VL bolt right into any from frame from thier own, knuckle up to the evo frame. A lot of people go crazy over the pan. I like the evo, and the shovel is also a good engine. However, the knuckle and pan are the real oil leaders. This is because the cases are made as a set . And many sets have been mismatch which causes oil leaks. Add to this the scoring of someone useing a flathead screw drive to split the cases. This can be said of the pre 1970 shovel as well. Another FYI. 74" equals 1200cc, 80 is 1340cc, and 62 is 900 (or 883) 45" is a 750 ( k model and service car) and I do not recall the cubic inch 1000cc Sportster. And yes the panhead and shovelhead and 1200 sporty are all 74". And yes the 900 ironhead and the 883 evo sporty are the same cubic inch. However the 900s shift and brake were on opposite sides of what they are now. I believe the K model, which is the precursor to the sporty, also had backwards shifts. This was to combat the European bikes. Also the K model was a flathead. BUT. You can swap the upper of a 900 sporty to one. Many K models became Sportster. So you can in effect. Take a 1940 knuckle, put evo heads and cylinders and make a 1940 80" or 1340. You can also swap that transmissions between all these non sportsters if you change to the primer for the trans. So you can have a 1940. Knuckle with a 6 speed trans and electric starter. Or a 1936 VL flathead with a 6 speed trans and starter. And the most a used Harley is worth is $6000. And a new one is the toilet paper you just wiped your bottom with. Harley many times throughout history has stubbed thier nose up at loyal Harley owners.

a good mechanic can tell if the engine runs good or not just by the sound.

I don't think the word "sound" means "sound 🔊" in this context

Ever heard a knucklehead? This pan is quiet AF compared. I’ve got a 96 FLDWG with 118ci that you wouldn’t even hear this bike running if they were side by side. For a Harley of that generation it’s very quiet.
