We didn't have money when I was a kid. You made do with what you could find or make yourself. Here is a prime example.

We used to rig em similar, but only wrapped about 1/3 of the way back from the tip. We also dried the cane in the barn tied in a tight bundle ( like someone posted) to dry out straight and not crack as easy. Cane poles are naturally flexible and strong. I don't think I had a proper rod and reel until I was older. We caught whatever would bite. We also had quill bobbers that worked really well, but I haven't seen any in years. I've caught what some would consider "big " bass with cane poles and fiberglass "cane" poles both. Just have to keep the pole up and let the tension wear out the fish Thanks for the video

I just did some trading with a buddy and wound up with a Cane pole. I thought it was neat that you were excited about 3k subs. Now 5 years later you got over 80k. Thanks Pawpaw for the advice.

I just got back from trying it out. I snatch a few bluegill this morning with it. My sons had fun with it. Now I just gotta find my spinal and attach it so I can whined the line up while I'm not using it.

Thanks for the vid! Loved the tip about running the line up the pole first so if it breaks you don't lose the fish. Very smart!

Once again PawPaw. Watching your shows from over here in the UK, you seem to be the epitome of what is now universally referred to as Americana. Outside of that though, I think you're a great American, a wonderful person, and an inspirational teacher of the old practical ways of doing things, and a pragmatic philosophy of of the new ways. Regards. Ray. Ps. I loved this one especially.

My granddaddy once caught a 12 and a 13lb bass on 2 can poles at the same time because he had 2 bobbered poles out for speck! A good florida bamboo cane pole can feed a family of 10!!!

I grew up kind of poor. I used to bring a pruning saw with me when fishing in the winter. In winter most trees where I lived had lost their leaves. If I saw a lure someone hung up in a tree and lost, and if I could cut that branch down, I would get myself a free lure!
@darthmusturd95262 жыл бұрын
some might say thats stealing, but anyone who actually cares about their lure would bring it with them

Great video on rigging a cane pole. I miss fishing with a cane pole, and will be breaking mine out again this week.
@Samlittlesr576 жыл бұрын
I always cut my cane poles (about a dozen) one year earlier than when I use them. I trim all of the stems and bundle them up tight together ( this keeps them straight) and hang them up under the eve's of the house or shed and llet them drie for one year. Then they are ready to use. If you take good care of them ( always hang them up under the eve when your done fishing) they will last you several years.

Thanks Steve. I am hoping folks my age don't browbeat me for making a video on something this simple, but SO many young people do not have a clue of how to do things the "old timey" way !
@steveharris26587 жыл бұрын
I think it is great! These young folks could learn some things from the "old timey" mentality and attitude. We always tried to be self sufficient and never really thought about buying something at the store (as you say, we had no money even if we wanted too). Only when we had no other means of getting something done, Keep them coming. I enjoy watching! I always make sure I click on the adware website in hopes it will help you out and ensure you continue to make these great videos! Thanks again.

I'm constantly finding interesting videos as I dig thru your list! This is fascinating stuff to me. Thanks again! I'm going back to see what else I can find hiding in there! :) We do have a pond here and just planted bamboo last year. It's too young to cut yet, but I gotta do this when it gets bigger! We have poles, but I think this way looks more fun and wanna teach my kids a new trick.
@burtnelson19877 жыл бұрын
Yep, done the same when I was a kid. Only difference is, up here in Michigan we had to use Willow switches. Works the same, just a bit more flimsey. My first real store-bought was that same Zebco 33 with a cheap fiberglass rod. Sure caught a lot of bluegill and sunfish on that. Thanks for the memories.

I'm only 42, I started with cane poles myself, and of course, the cork bobber. I don't do cheap on my rod and reels anymore, but to be truthful, it's not the the equipment that makes a good fisherman. I do make my own sinkers, you save a ton of money if you have access to scrap lead.
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reminder..... I should do a video on making my sinkers !!! My rods and reels are primarily Penn from deep sea fishing.....I never got into expensive fresh water....a Zebco 33 was always good enough for me.
