My dad told me stories of how he fished as a kid at his grandparents. He said they’d send him off at daylight and tell him to return when it was dark. No worries about how he’d eat. He said he’d go to the river and made himself bamboo poles and when he caught his fish he’d cover them in clay, leaving the tail out and put them in the fire. Apparently when you’d peel off the clay the scales came off too and it was ready to eat. I always wondered how exactly he made the poles. And since he passed recently I was never able to ask. Thank you so much for this video. I hope you are well and happy

Explode??? COOL! I'm a firm believer when the TV says "Don't try this at home." to go over to the neighbors house to try it.

You scared me with the different cutting tools you used in this episode. Cutting towards yourself with a saw and blade knife; you laid the blade knife open in your lap. And, I saw you slip with the Dremel too! Also, when did you get so safety conscience about throwing dangerous things in a fire? Seems I remember a time when we started our campfire with gasoline we poured from a milk jug; almost burned up the entire camp up! Also, I was initially confused by the thin white things hanging out from the bottom of your shorts; then I realized they were your legs! Seriously, nice video my friend!

Mack, how long did you let the poles hang and dry out before you wiped on the stain?
@MackinNC1
@MackinNC1 3 жыл бұрын
It was over 2 mos.....I guess the humidity and all the rain this year made it take a long time. Ideally people would be better off drying them in a barn or garage. I didnt have that option but they turned out looking really good.

I'm making one from a perfect pole I harvested live at McAlpine park yesterday.. (Charlotte) ..I like your cord / swivel setup.. and when I'm ready to tie I can see how you made the knots.. in a lot of videos it's too hard to see. Thanks!

I nailed a 15-footer down to the deck (only at the ends) and put nails around it to try to straighten it as it dried. Any opinions on this method?

How do you know it's dry enough to start the varnish? What happens if it's still green and you varnish and seal the pole? Also have you ever made bamboo bobbers?

Man, you don’t need a saw and pruners. Next time just get a machete, that’s how I always did it growing up. I got good with a machete too, I could cut a pole of the large bamboo that grows invasive in the south (not native switch cane) and strip it in about 2 minutes. I learned the angle to chop the bamboo and could fell it in a single swing. Then, starting from the top, slide that machete down the cane towards the base, clipping those branches at the joint, and then you’re left with a smooth cane pole.

You don't need them but I like mine cleaner looking. I have done it that way and find it harder. Thanks watching, Mack

Two ideas for hanging green poles from tree limbs to straighten,,, I tied two poles together with butcher's twine at small end near tip with a foot or two of twine between the two tips. Two to three feet of twine for two poles vs tiering a long stretch of rope per pole to hoist up. Then just raised both poles by hand SxS together,, think saddle bags,, to drape/hang across one limb that is stiff enough to hold the two poles with two broken "half bricks" for weights tied to butt end of each pole for the weights. A half brick per pole straightened my green poles to perfectly straight. Just hope they stay that straight when cured. That way obviously eliminates the tossing of the rope with the throw bag over a limb and then hoisting of the poles up one at a time and then tying the rope off somewhere. When time comes I will try using the grinding stone end of my bench grinder to grind off the small nubs. I think that should go faster than the Dremmel Tool to rid the pole of the nubs. And should be as neat as the Dremmel way too if done right,,, I hope. I used a sharp machete to chop the nubs off a few years ago which worked okay but,,,, Hope all that makes sense. Sorry for getting long winded Great video, keep up the good work
