The making of a huge Ninja Turtle sign. I'm using two stage carving and cutting out the sign all while tiling this huge sign which is bigger than my CNC. Tiling is the key. Everything must be just right. There is no room for error. I show you how in this video.

I do it slightly different where as I cut half the design in a full sheet then shift the sheet to do the rest. That way its all one piece still :) i make reference hole for picking up new xy zero. I meant to add that my method only works when you can place the reference holes in. It just seems easier for me that way. I also use pro cad/cam (gibbs and mastercam) so i can control my tool paths

That's the wonderful thing about woodworking including using a CNC. There are many different ways to accomplish the same thing. I showed tiling in numerous videos and each one has been a little different. For these comic signs, I have completed eleven to date and I must say I refined my methods over the entire period of time. Thank you very much for sharing your method.

Ok, understanding how to move the graphic up,down to registration points. I wonder about trying to use some dowels in the workpiece to serve as a registration point somehow. For 2nd carve, slide workpiece and lock it in with dowel. Guess you'd need dowel holes in top half of workpiece and bottom half. Oh, I did notice, after using fusion 360 to generate the gcode, reduced my 20min carve to 5 minutes on a certain project ... Much simpler carve than the one in your video though. Excellent end result.

I just did tiling today on a sign for my parents. It was slightly off which really was sad because it was about the first time I tried to do it. I am only using one bit and it is a 60° bit and is in graving the sign. I start out with a rectangle to the size of the sign I need and then I run the two path it is in graving the words on the sign. But then when I go for the second to pass that finishes the sign, it is off just a tiny bit. I built my machine so it is not manufactured built and cannot be hooked up to easel like yours. Do you have any tips on making sure it is back at the exact zero setpoint
@PawPawsWorkShop

Not sure exactly what was a tiny bit off. You could be slightly out of square to the machine. The router may have moved slightly if you changed bits. Look at each area

You need the registration mark, either one like I used or something in the carve itself that can be used. Even if it is a pencil mark. When you move the project you need to know exactly how far you are moving it and the machine must match that movement.

Thanks for the videos. I am just getting started in CNC but have done graphic work previously. Tiling is not a new thing but what's different is translating it to a machine. My head went wonkers however when you got to X-Y numbers around 8:23 and figuring how to position the Teenage Mutant portion. It would help me if you have the time to share it - 1. You have the X axis at 0, and the Y axis at 2.009 when the artwork is centered. I assume this derives from centering the artwork in reference to the background that's already been cut out -i.e. in the spot where it should be over the background? 2. You say you need to subtract 21" from the Y axis of 2.009. What is 21" a reference to - is that the size of the sign, or more likely, one half the length of the sign when it's centered? Ultimately is the goal to first, center the artwork, and then to adjust the artwork so the exact middle of the image is at the X,Y= 0, 2.009? I'm just trying to get my brain back in line with where you're going with this! ;) Thanks for showing us a way to figure it out! You're an inspiration! Oh, and do you have a video about setting up 2 stage carving - I'm not sure how you tell the machine to do that operation yet. I'll keep looking and check on your channel.

You've been REALLY helpful at seeing things to think about and to look out for when creating projects. I just decided to pick one (well actually I like Easel because it's pretty easy, but am also dabbling in Fusion 360 because I haven't figured out in Easel how to actually build a media center furniture piece I have in my head with a decorated via CNC front - but Fusion 360 is a big learning curve).
