Thanks for your videos. They have helped me tremendously on my CNC journey. I’m using Easel Pro and I’m having a problem with witness marks in my pockets. How can I create a final finishing pass to hopefully eliminate the marks? It’s worth noting I’m using a 1/4 down cut that’s brand new. All my settings are what are preset by easel.
@PawPawsWorkShop

If you are getting the tool marks in the bottom of the pocket that usually means you need to tram the gantry. This means the bit is not perfectly perpendicular to the project

Your channel - and videos - are a godsend! And I would love to see a video of your painting process for this sign and how to use masking. Also, would you consider doing a Zoom or other platform to show things like this, and take questions from viewers? I would be willing to pay and likely others if the cost is affordable ($5 - $10 ish for us hobbyists), but you could make some good money if you got enough people. Thanks for doing this work. Inventables is very helpful but your work goes way beyond what they have in their tutorials. Did you do that Kitchen sign in acrylic?

@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 4 жыл бұрын
First the stepper motors should be locked. Check you setting $1=255 should be the setting to lock the stepper on the XCarve. You may be over tightening the bit. Usually a half turn to three quarter turn with the wrench is all that is needed.

@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for subscribing to my channel. If you create a pocket and then want to carve in that pocket you can. Use the center point to establish your x,y position. You must be very careful with your design so that the router will not hit the edge of the pocket. That would cause you to lose steps and ruin the carve.

Carve the stars in one workpiece with the 90 degree bit. Set up the company logo in a separate workpiece to use the 60 degree bit. This is the same as doing two different projects. I'm new to the game and in the process of deciding on the software to learn. Don't want to start with a program that I will grow out of quickly. Looking at Vcarve Desktop, Fusion 360, Carveco Maker and Easel. Seems like everyone is either using Vcarve or Fusion 360. If your are going to learn one which o ne would you suggest?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop Жыл бұрын
The software I would learn is VCarve desktop. You will be able to design all of your projects and you will be able to adjust and alter 3D projects. You cannot creat 3D without Aspire which is expensive. You will also need a sender to send the gcode to the CNC machine. I use the Openbuilds controller which is free. I would also suggest to get Inkscape (also free). You will be able to easily improve files and convert images to svg files.

There has been many discussions on belt tension on the forum and the general thought is that they should be about 4.5 lbs when measured from the center and pulled up 1 inch. For me, my belts are 3.5 lbs and I have never had a problem. Again, it like everything else, what works for my machine may not work for yours.
@PawPawsWorkShop

Hey Paw Paw. I tried to duplicate this project as best I could so I could compare carve times, but mine differs from yours considerably. I created the same design and used the same bits, and I did NOT adjust the feed rates. Your simulation estimated 7 minutes for the roughing pass and 17 minutes for the detail pass. When I do it, it estimates 11 minutes and 30 minutes. Any idea why there would be such a difference??

Inventables has made a number of changes since I did this video. Some causes could be speed rate and depth of cut. The number of passes will affect the time greatly. Also, the stepover could be different. I do not remember what that setting was at the time.

Did you do the roughing pass at .5” or .05”? He says 1/2” but then set the cutting depth to 1/20”

Thanks for your video, I've tried to make my first sign, selected 2 bits but it went all the way without the option of changing the bit. Any idea where I went wrong? Best regards from the Netherlands! PS: just saw that this video is from 2018, over 3 years ago and your channel has grown to 114K subscribers, wow! Good job!

Are you using easel? If so, you will run the roughing pass. Once completed you start again and as you go through the checklist you have the opportunity to select the detail pass

This really isn't about two stage carving but hope you can help. All of a sudden there is no way to open another window when working on a project. Also if I open an older project all the extra windows that I created are gone. Can this be fixed?

@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 5 жыл бұрын
Two stage carving is using two bit while in only one work piece. I used a small straight bit to rough out the bulk of the material, then changed the bit to a v-bit and completed the detail pass. In Easel in the top right corner you have the chosen bit displayed, next to it is a plus sign. It is there that you can add the second bit.

Beside the Bit selection pane to the right is + to add the second bit.

I've tried this. My problem is that I can't change the bit without moving the router. So I never end up back at the same zero. Any suggestions?

@@AngieWilliamsDesigns I believe you can go to [Menu] Machine >> Advanced > Machine Inspector, which will display the machine position. Jog the spindle to a convenient location, change the bit, then jog it back to where x, y, and z are all back at zero. This should work, but you'll want to try it on a test piece first. Good luck with your project.

Marc Johnson I was able to figure out how to lock it. But I've still had times where it accidentally moves. This is a great suggestion

@@AngieWilliamsDesigns Literally just occurred to me, one other option is to use a couple of dial indicators attached to bases (one to measure the X position and one for the Y position). Set them at zero, jog away, change bit, jog back to zero on both indicators. Same concept, just measurement that is independent from the machine. Ebay search "Dial indicator and base" for anyone not familiar.

Thanks for the video, I'm new to X-carve and haven't done 2 stage carve yet. Is there still a possibility when changing the bit, the router can be moved ever so slightly? Can one use the last XY setting command to get around that or can homing / limit switches be use to calibrate back to original position? Thanks.
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 6 жыл бұрын
Armando Jaimes . Yes you can use last xy. Be cautious, I have been successful with this and I have also had the machine take off in its own world. Sometimes it will forget the position. Therefore I do not trust it anymore. You may have more success than I have had with using this function

how do you do a 2 stage carve from Vcarve to easel?
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 5 жыл бұрын
Chris Scheele . In Vcarve you would setup tool paths for the two bits. Create the gcode and send to easel. Open each gcode file in a separate work piece. Then carve each work piece with its correct bit. Hope this helps you

Good Morning... I don’t have an X-carve but I do have a SainSmart 3018. I’m assuming that these instructions can be applied to my machine. If not, what should I be doing different. Also, I want to save this to a “flash drive” and copy it to my lap top in the garage, what kind of problems would I have? Thanks

It should be similar, I am not familiar with that machine. In Easel you can save the files to your computer using download zip. Last tab on the left side of the screen.

Hi paw paw....in my opinion its bad for the xcarve to store it vertically....you are putting irregular force on components not designed that way....success or not.....its a bad idea....it would most certainly twist and bend components...and go out of square at a minimum .....thanks
