More than 13 years ago I started feeding our dogs Prey Model Raw (Frankenprey). It was not an easy decision. I was drawn by that approach when one of our dogs started showing obsessive behavior when nosing and pushing his bowl of what I thought was good quality kibble around the room. I started researching for reliable sources of the best dog food I could find. I decided on Orijen Regional Red. I started feeding this food and my dogs seemed to like it and the obsessive behavior disappeared. But during my research I noticed several non-commercial endorsements of raw feeding. Intrigued, I did more research on the topic. That led me to several months of research. Finding reliable sources and trying to educate myself to forming an informed opinion. Tough work! It was not an easy decision but I was convinced enough to try the raw feed approach. I did not take this decision lightly. After all these years and raising four dogs successfully, I believe that raw feeding works. But I'm not fanatical about it. Perhaps, if I had continued feeding commercial dog food, my dogs would have been equally healthy. I don't know, for sure. The single thing that I'm convinced of is that dogs are resilient and can live a healthy live no matter feeding top-quality commercial food or variations of the raw food approach (and the many rather obsessive supplement ideas on the internet). Love your dog. Do your research and come to your own conclusions. That's all you need to do. Cheers to all of those who love their dogs and are trying to do the best by them.

Its more the breadth of the population to worry about, most dogs may be fine enough with quality kibble, but not all dogs. All dogs (barring a rare few) will be good on their wild habitats standard. Though it is important to note that dogs aren't wolves and have been eating a diet more similar to our own as long as they have been dogs.

@TriggaTreDay
@TriggaTreDay Жыл бұрын
@@SBC2317 nope! They are now 2yrs old and super healthy. So after we wash the chicken we will put it in the microwave for 1min, sometimes 2mins to kill any bacteria that may be on the out layer of the chicken skin. And once we add all of their food to their bowl we pour in super hot water. But it is still completely raw. in 2021 we were giving them a black walnut and wormwood tincture as a dewormer, but in 2022 we started giving them DE to help keep the parasites guessing 😁. This year I will be alternating between the two. I make tinctures, so I will be adding more stuff to their diets within the coming months. We don’t give them wheat 🌾 products. I make all of their snacks using meat and or dried fruit and veggies and we give them tons of veggies with every meal. I think because their immune systems are so strong they are able to fight off different types of bacteria that may otherwise harm dogs that don’t have as healthy of a diet.

@@AnimalQueen-xf6vu i use premade raw food when I can, but sometimes i use wet dog food that has good ingredients and i always mix either with a vegetable puree and add salmon oil to the bowl. It's very easy if you get meals that are already balanced. Avoid foods that have wheat, rice, sugar, chicken meal. Make sure your raw food has organ meats and bones. Bones are pretty rare in food, so i suggest buying chicken wings, chicken/duck feet or chicken/duck necks (better for bigger dog breeds) . This also brushes their teeth and helps bad breath. If you can't get any of the above, get glucosamine tablets for their bone health

I'm a first-time dog owner, and while I didn't want my dog just eating dry kibble day in and day out, I also was very cautious about trusting information from the internet that hasn't been scientifically verified (you talk about this in a different video I also watched). I am currently feeding a diet that is half high-quality kibble (Hill's) and half fresh gently-cooked food I make myself. I use ground poulrty, brown rice (lower GI than white), grated carrot, spinach, and egg. A local poultry farm also makes and sells a "pet grind" that includes organ meat and finely-ground bones, so about half the ground poultry is made up of that. My dog also gets a daily multivitamin. It's working really well for us and I love that he's not just eating kibble!

You seem to be doing right by your dog. But, I would do more research on Hills Science Diet. Their website says that corn meal is good for dogs and cats. I posted that dogs and cats don't need grains and cats can't even process corn. HSD replied, that, when they process the corn into meal, it is healthy. HSD neglected to say that the "processing" destroys all nutritional value. Corn is cheap filler, nothing more.

Brown rice is very high in arsenic so skip that, and spinach is very high oxalate which can cause joint and kidney problems . I agree about gently cooking fresh food and adding to smaller amounts of kibble for optimal health. Try Nature’s Logic or other kibble which contain no synthetic chemicals.

I give her a whole small apple called a dragon apple which she gets 5 slices via every i half cup then i also feed powdered cooked egg shell for calcium and she gets 2 1/8th teaspoons of cinnomon which helps with dogs who are diabetic or just to aid in preventing diabetes, she then gets 3 cooked plain large organic brown eggs mixed in her food as well then 2 special vitamans which come in the form of inhanced treats ome is for skin and coat with lots of omega 3s vitamans and minerals to and one for hip and joint with the same amout of stuff it as the skin and coat one then she gets a flora and digestive health probiotic and a table spoon of mint leaves and a tablespoon of parsley for teeth and breath health, then basil to help prevent cancer then a add a half cup of kibble threw out her meals the day. She gets 90% vet formulated cooked diet that i worked to creat for my service animals and future ones when i was working at a vet clinic in high school so it is very safe and exstreamly healthy and vitamin rich and the 10% kibble helps aid in getting extra vitamins and minerals and gives the ones not in her cooked diet that i can't afford at the moment

it's good either way, as long as it's not dry kibble or wet canned you good to go. raw or cook (can be diy or premade) as well as dehydrated (air dried or freeze dried). just don't do kibble or canned (unless it's a human grade means a food for us that made specific and pack for pets so even human can consume it and this type of wet canned is made in human food facility). this way pet food companies can change (or forced) to be a better pet food makers and worth for our money and pets instead of charging us a lots of money by giving us piece of crap that they called food.

Some nutrients are lost through the water when boiling but cooking in general will diminish vitamins A,B,C,D,K and minerals like potassium, magnesium, sodium, and calcium... Cook time/temp and food source will effect how much nutrient loss takes place. That being said I know for humans cooked eggs have almost twice the digestible protein as raw eggs... And do what’s best for your dog! ☺️☺️ I think that most homemade cooked diets are not the best, especially since the DIY ones consisting of just rice, veggies, and muscle meat only are no where near balanced. (Keep in mind, I’m not speaking for ALL cooked diets, I feed my dog a cooked diet as well!) I rather feed a balanced kibble than an un balanced fresh diet. I personally feed my dog mostly consisting of cooked muscle meats and organs, along with raw meaty bones and sometimes recreational chews. I also give him myoglobin and broth! Fruits, fish oil, veggie purée, and many more add ons here and there to help fill out nutritional requirements. He’s a healthy, thriving one! ❤️ Yay for feeding fresh!

My only concern is that the male has cardiomyopathy (diagnosed as he turned 7 a month ago) and is on medication and the female most likely has asthma. I still feel that they would benefit more form a raw diet but with chronic disease there is not enough information out there and the vets are for sure going to advise against it. Amazing video, love this series already. My dog doesn’t like it when I soak and purée his seeds and nuts so instead can I make it into nut butter. For example, I will just blend almonds for a long time until it has that nut butter consistency. Will they still be able to absorb the nutrients?
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 жыл бұрын
So the nuts and seeds need to be soaked to remove the phytic acid, which can inhibit the absorption of certain nutrients. You can soak then let them dry, then blend them so they're less watery in texture, or you can freeze them into moulds, then they're more firm like a treat!

hi! i love all your videos, especially this one :) i feed my puppy a home cooked diet (meat, vegetables and fruits), and also a multivitamin tablet, called vitalmix from kala health. do you think giving him this one tablet per day is enough to meet his nutrient requirements?
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 жыл бұрын
I unfortunately can't say. Multivitamins are a bit of a gimmick since the amount of each nutrient an animal needs depends on a lot of different factors, not just a weight range dosage. Either way, it's not something that will harm your pet either.

I was feeding my puppy raw and she loved it, but she kept going through bits where she’d get diarrhea before pooping that very easy to pick up poop dogs on a raw food diet usually have for two months. I switched her over to cooked, and her tummy problems are gone. I was really hoping the raw would be good for her, and I’m sure it was, but I think every dog is different and for her cooked is better. :)

Yes, it's important to remember that domestic dogs aren't wolves. They are omnivorous animals that evolved to eat what we threw away, and that includes a considerable amount of cooked food, especially in more recent times. As a result, different genes floating around in the gene pools of dogs may mean some individuals do best on a diet similar to wolves, while others do better on a diet that is frankly more similar to ours.

I just started feeding my dog raw food based on a chart i found and it says the 80% of meat they need can only be fed 2-3 times a week along 10% bone, 5% excreting organ, 5% liver. i feed him brain, heart, testicle, liver ground beef with pureed carrots broccoli and spinach and a chicken leg. In the afternoon i feed him 2 chicken legs and a 7oz ball of the ground beef. Now where i am really confused and where my question comes in is what do i feed my dog the other 4 days out of the week Because i fed him what he needed the first 3 days of the week? (Hes 50lbs i also weigh out all his raw meat and i need to feed 8oz in the morning and afternoon which comes out to being a little more than a pound a day and i need to meet his daily food intake for his size) i definitley feel like im not balancing something right any tips would really help me out please and thanks

If you are going to feed your pets or even yourself spinach, please cook it as it’ll get rid of the oxalates(a natural forming “anti nutrient”) that blocks the absorption of calcium. Obviously having some raw here and there won’t hurt as it’ll provide some variety to your micro biome, but eat it mostly cooked for best results from eating spinach :)
@DonnaFernstrom
@DonnaFernstrom Жыл бұрын
Cooking does NOT remove oxalates. Spinach should not be a routine part of a pet's diet. (Or yours - it's really healthy to eat occasionally, but not every single day). The same is true of brassicas (cabbage/broccoli/etc).

To be fair though for owners who want to feed raw but can’t because their dogs are on treatment for cancer, liver issues, antibiotics ect ect a lightly cooked version of raw diet is the best alternative and “BARF” is the best version of of raw diet plus it can still be lightly cooked. I’m a vet nurse but studied animal nutrition, I had my pups on a raw barf diet but I’ve since switched over to LYKA as it’s still a raw meal but lightly cooked and has everything they need in it and it gets delivered to my door. However I also order “scratch” dry food to mix into their raw meals. Both companies are Australian with locally sourced products and have looked at a lot but these two are the best. I add eggs and sardines still as well as the egg shell and rosehip vital. If I do cook them any meat (kangaroo for example) I add the oils and water I used to cook it into their meal or water

@@chriss5779 There has been no evidence because there have been very little studies done. The amount of studies done compared to commercial diets are obviously vast because they own the pet food space. The absence of something does not mean it doesnt work. Cats are obligate carnivores, so its more than obvious that commercial diets are not species appropriate nor nutritious. Cats did not evolve to eat kibble. Because if they did, their teeth and many other things about a cat would evolve too, but they didnt. Commercial diets were only made to convenience humans, not animals. 80 years ago you think cats were eating commercial diets? 😂

Cooking destroys the nutrients for the cat. You can just wash the meat in vinegar water to kill the bacteria. Vinegar kills bacteria. The cat needs every bit of nutrients that comes from the raw meat because they are obligate carnivores. The reason why humans can get away with cooking is because we are omnivores and we don't depend as heavily on meat like cats do.

@Waterbottle0010
@Waterbottle0010 2 жыл бұрын
That’s fine in my opinion, as long as you don’t cook the bones because cooked bones are hazardous to pets and find other sources for calcium, like calcium or eggshell powder. Also include the water that you cooked the meal in. Also because heat does alter the bioavailability of nutrients, it’s probably a better idea to just cook meats and add in premixed supplement powder that has all the nutrients the pet needs. Or you can alter cooked PMR with something that’s complete and balanced (maybe high quality canned) to avoid long term nutrient deficiency.
