I'm a historical fiction novelist. This has been helpful for me to get into my 1910s character's mindset. Kind of surreal that this is the music he would have listened to. It makes him almost real. Thank you!

I'm a 15-year old that's into older music, my great grandfather was born in 1911, he later joined the army in WW2. Never met him, he died from a heart attack while fishing with my grandfather and father in 1987.

Sorry you never met your great grandfather. I was born in 1948 -and never knew my great grand father - but saw my grandfather on my father`s side for quite a number of years - but my mother`s father died when I was still a baby. It does make you think of all those generations before us; quite poignant thoughts, really. All the best. Bev

They called it “Rag Time” but whatever you call it, it was great. And it had the additional advantage of being color-blind at a time when that was not the first option. In fact, the father of rag time was an American whose family was not that many years off the slave trader boats from Africa. As you listen, say a memorial prayer for Scott Joplin, who ranks alongside Irving Berlin for his contributions to our musical history. How do you back that up? People were so brave in this time that somewhat strange behaviour would be enough to justify throwing somebody in a torture camp (asylum). A time when white people wouldn't let black people drink the same water as them. A time when men wouldn't let their wives vote. How courageous.

@@80ki68 Compared to the utopia we live in today right? America 1900s to the 1960s: Social cohesion, Christian values, a sense of optimism about the future, healthy well adjusted children raised in loving Christian households capable of positively contributing to their communities, pride in one's country. You lot have been at the forefront of destroying all this for the past 50-60 years and calling it progress as you do so. Look at America now. Look at what you and your ilk have done to it. For shame, sir, for shame.
