My Mother past on a number of years ago - She was born in 1898 , so in the 1920s she was in her prime...I wish that she was still around to hear this music again....She had a wonderful gift- She could hear a song on the radio and then sit down at the piano and play it, and she never had a lesson...I think of her every time I hear this music -THANK YOU .....

Good on you for liking this music---and good FOR you, too, since it lifts one's spirits every time. As a long-time fan of this music (and more generally, of the music of the 1920s to '40s ) I find that there is a lively innocence about it that is completely foreign to today's music. Plus, as a die-hard jazz fan, and clarinetist and saxophonist besides, I would love to have a ch wance to play in a band that specializes in this kind of material. My tastes in music are quite wide-ranging ( I love classical, jazz, opera, blues, and folk music from other countries ), but again and again I find myself coming back to the kind of music they play here. She is a gentle mistress, so to speak, who compels with her charm. As a tireless collector of recordings, I have listened to old records from at least age 3, beginning with my Grandmother's old 78s. Today I am 50 years old. My fascination with this era of music, big bands, and so many styles of music, began when I was 12, at the same time I began clarinet in school. I have continued with it ever since, branching out to saxophone and singing. Best wishes for a safe, healthy and contented Christmas and New Year---and here's looking forward to the end of COVID-19!!! Remember to always turn to music to keep your spirits lifted---that is why this material is here for us to enjoy!!!

Thank you so much for these musical selections!! Enjoying the goodness of what God has offered to mankind throughout the centuries is oh so AWESOME. Who could imagine that music that dates back even to early music would be available for our entertainment over something called the internet?! It is a GREAT JOY to be listening to these musical treasures of the 1920s that pre-date my birth by 30 years. Thank you. This new subbie, from Texas, though living in Arizona, is looking forward to listening to more of your selections. God continue to bless us one and all.

Just a little note, for interest's sake: Track 18--"You Forgot to Remember," with words and music by Irving Berlin, is more commonly known by the one-word title "Remember." A decade later (1936) Benny Goodman and Red Norvo each recorded big-band versions of "Remember." Although I have always been a fan of both Big Band performances, the waltz tempo of this piece really comes across in this Whiteman recording, which I really enjoyed.

It was just an excuse so the techs could hear the orchestra play again! Imagine getting paid to hear 20's dance orchestras play that music live--they probably kicked themselves every morning when they got up that why didn't they become an accountant or mortician instead.

The master discs could only produce a finite number of records, so they sometimes made more than one, either simultaneously on a second machine or by doing another take.

About the Harry Bidgood version of "our Bungalow of Dreams" Track 4: In the same month of April 1928, Bix and "Tram''' ( legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke and his frequent musical partner, C-melody saxophonist Frank Trumbauer ) recorded this same title, under the billing of "Frank Trumbauer and His Orchestra. This is a great chance to compare two versions of the same song.

Great selection, though--Ahem!--a little heavy on the lugubrious waltzes. I like the peppier stuff much better. Thanks for this--there are certainly some gems here!

@@pax41 Perhaps because I can waltz I find the waltzes and slow fox-trots are the perfect counterbalance to the peppier numbers which I also enjoy. The orchestras in their day would have played such a balance to suit their dancing crowds. Excellent .

Movie Magazine -- 25cents. That's quite a bit to pay for a magazine in the 20's. People worked for $2.00 for an 8 hour shift. Its cheaper to buy a People magazine today with minimum wage of $11.00 per hour. I suspect that those old magazines are quite a collectible today. I am going to check ebay.

John, in the 1920's there was quite a large middle class that could afford these magazines. I think it is one of the reasons so many of these magazines still exist. Just curious where you are at with a minimum wage of $11? The minimum wage here in Texas is still $7.25. I read that 29 states have mandated higher minimum wages than the federal rate of $7.25. My daughter started her first job a few weeks ago here and she is at $10.00 an hour.
