We need to talk about Pay Per Mile... Where has this 0.15p per mile charge come from? Have the government actually said anything, or is it all just bad journalism and dodgy numbers? Geoff wants some answers.

The 15p per mile is a classic example of pretending its going to be really expensive and then they bring it in at much lower costs and instead of being outraged (like we should be), everyone is relieved and accepts it, then they slowly creep it up over time JUST SAY NO TO PAY PER MILE ! whatever the price they bring it in at !

A quick google search suggests that the average car travels 12,000 miles per year. Pay per mile at 15p would equate to £1800 per year or the equivalent of £150 per month! Even at 5p per mile it comes in at £600 per year (based on 12,000 miles PA)/ £50 month. City dwellers where ULEZ & Congestion fees apply are already paying up to £27.50 a day if they incur both of the charges; based on a five day week, the £12.50 ULEZ fee alone equates to £3k a year or £250 per month, imagine adding PPM to those figures!

If they introduce pay-per-mile then they’ll remove the fuel tax, surely? Otherwise they’ll be taxing you twice. UK drivers need to get out their yellow vests and start acting up. Governments need to be afraid of the people, NOT the other way round!

Great video Geoff,(they all are) the Internet is full of all this "pay per mile" stuff,it's really winding a lot of people up, we do already pay the more we use the roads,it's called tax on fuel, the more you use the more you pay, so any pay per mile charge has got to replace the current VED charges and the tax put onto fuel, EV's have got to pay the same amount,no cheaper rates for them, they use the roads, but our roads need to be in a decent condition to charge us for using them,so fix all the potholes and terrible surfaces first, get rid of all the coned off lanes with nobody working and the dangerous " smart motorways" then come back to us with pay per mile ideas, but not until the roads are sorted.

As long as pay per mile replaces VED, I'd be happy with it.. I've got three vehicles, I can only drive one at once and my mileage isn't high. But if pay per mile is in addition to VED, that's a legalised scam.

Think of the VED as a standing charge, and PPM & fuel duty as unit charges. If we accept it on utility bills, then we'll accept it for driving.

We pay around 0.6p per mile in fuel tax. So just for travelling to and from work, without the road tax itself, I pay around £60 a year. The real problem for a lot of people would be linking the MOT and road tax. People try to keep the 3 big car expenses around 4 months apart. MOT, tax, and insurance. Having 2 of them at the same time, especially with the insane numbers that keep floating around, would have a months wages disappearing in one go.

Geoff you should consider contacting an agent that clears fuel tankers through customs and ask. How much the tanker was when it arrived in the UK and how much after excise duty, possible customs duty, then vat on top. One of them would spill the beans. Then you would have some idea of tax on fuel. Of course the vat will actually increase as vat will be recalculated on the marked up price of the fuel.
