David & David explain what makes Macs slow, show you how to speed up your Mac, and debunk some misconceptions about what slows down Macs.
Macs can slow down for many different reasons. It's a good idea to check Activity Monitor to see if any application is using a disproportionate amount of your Mac's CPU or Memory. If an application or process is using a very high amount of CPU or Memory, that application is probably what is slowing down your Mac.
Your Mac also needs a certain amount of storage space to run smoothly. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your Mac has twice as much storage as it does Memory. So, if your Mac has 8 GB of Memory, it should have at least 16 GB of available storage space.
If you recently installed a third-party "cleaner" app, try uninstalling it. These apps aren't usually necessary, and they can often cause more harm than good. Leaving too many tabs open in your browser can also slow down your Mac.
One good way to speed up your Mac and keep it running smoothly is to update it regularly. You can check for macOS updates by clicking the Apple logo in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, then clicking About This Mac. Finally, click Software Update to see if a macOS update is available.
Finally, it's a good idea to plug in your Mac and leave it in Sleep mode. Ever since macOS Sierra, Macs have run maintenance tasks on its own. However, it needs RAM (random access memory) and battery life to perform those tasks and keep your Mac running smoothly.
1. Remove Third-Party Cleaners [0:23]
2. Check Activity Monitor [1:42]
3. Check Available Storage Space [2:56]
4. Check For A macOS Update [3:43]
5. Close Apps You're Not Using [4:19]
6. Check The Menu Bar For Other Apps [5:37]

I disagree with software updates improving the performance of a Mac. I have found that it slows down your Mac. it isn't as noticeable when your Mac. is newer, but as time goes on and you compare it against a new Mac., you will see a dramatic difference. Software updates are optimized for the latest Mac. released. I have yet to be proven wrong.

true, i updated my mac a few weeks ago and noticed sudden drop in battery life, a sudden drop in speed quality and a sudden trouble in trying to start the laptop. i really wish i didn’t update it because my battery life was astonishing before i updated it.. stayed for 4 days on battery. now i need to charge it every night.. honestly, my laptop would not survive without a portable charger thingy-

Agree... The only ones who seem to peddle this fallacy are those who wouldn't mind selling you a whole new computer sooner rather than later. That's not to imply that security patches aren't of utmost importance... But many security patches are unfortunately bundled with non-essential "features" that increase demand on the system. My general rule: Once a computer is 4 years old, I'll do a clean install of whatever OS seems the best for the hardware, and make sure nothing is auto-updating. My 11-year-old Mac Pro is certainly less capable by today's standards - but as long as I keep it clean and avoid the latest updates, it can run High Sierra very well, and I still get great use out of it.

Question: I have Adobe products on my iMac. I noticed that when I was uninstalling some Apps that I don't use, I had several versions of Adobe products on my mac. For example Photoshop 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022. Do I need all these? Or are they just the updates for Photoshop?

The best way I have been able to speed up an old Mac was to put Linux on it. My kid’s 15 year old Mac wouldn’t boot, was so old it couldn’t be updated. My kid loves it . Better than a chrome book or even the internet boxes sold uptown . I think it has an i5 in it.

Or install an SSD with a fresh system install
@jameskirk3
@jameskirk3 9 ай бұрын
If you have the original OS disk, you may find it helpful to install the system to an external SSD and create a bootable startup disk for it. My old 2009 iMac runs High Sierra just fine but it took some doing. It sucks that Mac hides startup items and caches in four different locations, each. Once you've found them all it's not too bad to manually delete them. Once that is actually done, the startup should take less than 2 minutes from a cold boot to get to the desktop and running a program. When I first got this Mac it took about 8 minutes to boot up because of all the old junk and the startup items. The activity log is the key to finding it all. Anything not running by "system" or "root" is optional (meaning it shouldn't be running if you don't want it to slow down the startup.) One thing I found that helped a lot was disabling automatic internet connection as well. When I boot up my computer, I have to go and turn on the WiFi, which keeps it from communicating outside of its own system. All of the logs and shared information for performance and ad tracking happen in the background. They dont need to be running. It is a better system, using almost any Linux distribution, than the corporate OS's (Mac, iOS, Windows, even big name android to some degree though android is less of an offender than the others) as Linux distro's are generally community built and supported, so they aren't making big time money off pushing ads and selling data en mass. Good call on that one, but I do prefer to have a dual boot system I can run the original OS on. Just in case.

Monterey version 12.4 is the latest installed on my mac. Using NVME SSD. I use a lot of google apps so chrome is the browser I use most but I like to store all my passwords for sites I visit in apples password manager so I use safari for any of these. The problem I suspect is that having safari and chrome compete for the same resources uses more resources over all than if I just use one or the other. So I never run both browsers at the same time anymore.

You need to show the monitor screens more than your faces to allow people to follow. Light theme and not scaled up monitor to provide larger text to make screens more readable. As an advanced user, I find after going from Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, and finally Sonoma, the only fix is to freshly install Sonoma and reinstall your apps. That fixed my slow iMac18,1.

I saw a video on youtube that if I understood correctly and this was for windows but suspect the same with mac restart clears all the running programs out of your computer. Shutdown is more like hibernate. It will open a lot of the stuf you had running when you shutdown. So "my understanding" is if you want all that crap to come back when you start your computer up use "shut down". But if you want all the apps you were using the prior session to go away use "restart".

I'm not sure I fully understand your comment at 3:00... Essentially, you're saying the more RAM my system has, the less hard drive space I should use. Can you explain this in a bit more detail? According to your advice, if I have a 512gb hard drive and 64gb of RAM, I should keep 128gb of my hard disk free at all times (reducing my usable HDD space to 384gb)... But if I only have 16gb of RAM, I'd only need to keep 32gb free on the hard drive (thus increasing my usable hard drive space to 480gb). I'd just love a little more explanation on this... I always thought additional RAM helped to reduce demand on the hard drive.

@@jerryx2000 thanks for the reply, but I wasn't asking for acknowledgement. I understand the basic math, but was hoping for more detail about *why* they're recommending this. Initially, it just seems a bit strange to me that more RAM means less usable hard drive space... So I guess some elaboration on how "swap space" works with the hard drive would be helpful. I'll Google.

@@jerryx2000 In the event that you run out of RAM, that does make sense... but it still doesn't explain why I (apparently) need 2X the amount of RAM always available on the SSD. I'll look into it more, but was hoping for a little more engagement from the OP of this video. In general they seem like they know what they're talking about - but I always thought installing more RAM reduced the need to rely on the SSD for additional memory (your reply seems to support this assumption). However, the OP is claiming the opposite: That installing more RAM means you need even *more* surplus space on your SSD. I want to believe their information is accurate, but I also would love a clearer explanation than, "you need more **swap space.**"

Yes I would uninstall Norton. I found it was a virus that put its programming in everywhere. 1. Apple Support community members are very helpful, if you want to check with them first before going into keychain. Removing old passwords helped me as well as resetting SMC and NVRAM. Google “How to reset the SMC on an M1 or Intel,” Mac Macworld article for procedures for your type of MacBook. 1. Search in Finder for norton and symantec on your Mac and delete and delete from Trash. Restart your computer. 2. Look through Settings and delete (use minus sign) for Norton and Symantec. I found norton on passwords in System Preferences>Passwords. 3. Press Command+Shift+G to look in /Library/Caches/ and ~/Library/Caches. I am sure there are other parts of system norton and symantec has put itself in computer.

If you want to speed up your computer, you need to remove all the old temp files and stop it from running things it doesnt need. Check the activity log and clear out anything that isnt running by the system. If a user profile is running processes, your computer doesnt need it to run. Get it out of the startup folders. When you first get an old computer, or first go to clean out your old computer, it is a GREAT idea to back up all the media you have saved, like photos and videos, documents, etc. Confirm that you have passwords for everything you need, then wipe the drive and install the OS from the DVD or ISO that came with the computer when new. Once that is done, you can update the OS, then optimize the system. Finally load your files back in and install the apps you NEED, with their current versions for your OS. If you are running an old OS, you may have to find the specific version of an app from their developers page and download it from the internet, not the app store. This is also a great time to partition the disk and load any secondary operating systems you want to be able to boot to, such as Ubuntu or Windows.

The only way to speed up a Mac after Apple slows it down, is by buying a new Mac.

You might want to go into a little more detail on things we DON'T want running on our Macs. Mine has some kind of decoder something (many more letters but whatever). How do I know what these things mean? I like your videos, gentlemen, though I'm puzzled that so many are things to turn off or on, or do or not do. Oh, and another thing. On my activity monitor there's a photoanalysis going on. Why is that and why would it be going on? That's what I mean about not knowing the pearls and swine.Also, I'd like to know about scanning software. I have malwarebytes but have never started paying. Apple clerks insist that they don't make viruses for the Mac, but I have trouble believing that. I can believe that the structure may or may not make it more difficult for viruses to do their mischief, but I don't know enough to do anything about it in any case. Time machine. (so many questions!) I had it running on my desktop, which is no longer working. I don't intend to replace it, just use my laptop, but can I switch it over to this laptop easily? I haven't looked yet, but since y'all are right here, just thought I'd ask. Maybe I can meld the two together or something. Lots of data on there though.

IMO if an app is harder to uninstall than it was to install it, it's malware.

We found in our tests that they do end up hindering performance more than they help! There are guides online on how to uninstall them since they are more ingrained into the computer than most programs. Thanks for watching!

"A lot of times [your Mac] gets faster [with OS updates]!" Not necessarily if you are running an older machine. And a lot of folks do. I'm typing this right now on a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro I'm perfectly happy with, running Mojave. That's as far as I should go in updating. (Which is why, basically, Apple increasingly sucks.)

@@lakeit I simply find that its not really an upgrade from an i5. It’s laggy and anything to do with MacOS takes ages especially updates.

It's a terrible idea to 'upgrade your os'. That will just slow down your computer even more. It's horrible, horrible advice. Most peoples' computer can't handle the new updates and there is no way to roll them back. Please don't do this.
