Not exactly invulnerability. Open gun ports (covers were not installed) were hit multiple times. Hull under waterline was not armored and rudder was not protected at all. In fact, Monitor tried to hit rudder and missed. Since that moment, Virginia turned its bow against monitor to prevent to hit rudder again.

I thought the same but then I realised that years and years of drilling is required and during battle they have to be reloading machines with no distraction until unable to do so.

I was watching documentary narrated by Roy Schneider his historian at the University said that out comes the Virginia the ironclad monster she engages Cumberland with several hundred sailors dead she then fires hotshot into the Cumberland and soon she's a massive ball of flame then she turns around and takes her over an hour to make 180° turn and engages Congress.

Hot shot was just as dangerous to the shooter as it was the target. Sometimes the shot exploded in the cannon or just semi welded itself to the inside causing the gun to explode.
