Just change the oil frequently, have clean filters, etc etc and most of the problems will be avoided.

yes, your taxes pay for that, but so do several things help pay for buses (e.g., lottery money), it's not *only* taxes. i hate this argument anyway -- *my* taxes goes into that, too, yet i don't have any kids, so i'm paying for something that has zero benefit to me to provide transportation in a state (in my case OH, in this case FL) where it's a privilege, not a right or law barring a few exemptions. sure, if i only paid taxes for things that benefited me personally, there wouldn't be enough support for much out there to keep departments running. but, there are priorities and then there are non-essential services, which school busing mostly is. i'm a sub school bus driver, i know it could all end tomorrow. i've seen my district go through a drivers strike and the parents just told to figure it out, but there was some limited busing to accommodate for certain state laws and other situations. as a sub, i couldn't wait it out, found another job and returned years later. that said, yikes, if my back is against the wall the last thing i would consider is hiring yet another mismanager given that mismanagement was probably a huge reason why we're all in this mess.

Education isn't getting alot of funding from the government. Give them a break, they cant afford to buy 20 new busses.

the busses always sucked when I was in school I remember hearing my bus driver complaining about PBC buying 2nd and 3rd hand busses just to save money. in middle school our bus would brake down at least once a week. it got to a point that my parents got me a Palm Tran pass. I would ride my bike to the Palm Tran PGA and us1 stop to catch the bus to the Palm Beach gardens mall. transfer to another bus to A1A and lighthouse rd. then ride my bike the rest of the way. when I was in highschool my junior year it wasn't uncommon for the bus to be over an hour late it got to a point to where my mom would take me to school and my sisters would pick me up sence I babysit for her. or I would get a ride from a friend who lived in Jupiter on Indian town Rd. my mom worked in Jupiter farms just of Jupiter farms Rd. so on the days I went to Holly's my mom would pick me up and we would take us1 home instead of i95

princessmitsuko 2nd hand and 3rd hand buses do suck. That is why in the state of Maryland it is illegal for school to buy used buses. They have to buy them new from the factory and run them for 15 years, and then sell em.

It'll be helluva lot cheaper if students take a car ride to school and back instead of bus rides,in which it makes perfect sense.

cheaper for who, the schools? bear in mind it's not a law in FL that a school bus has to take your kid to school, busing is a privilege aside from some exemptions. besides, parents who take kids to school already create a traffic nightmare. if i don't have to pick up a kid ten miles out of my way, i'm hauling 40+ kids to school in about 20 or so minutes, in a vehicle that's the safest form of ground transportation, and dropping them off safely where they need to be, hopefully at the right time given conditions outside my control. if you've ever dropped you kids off at school, you'll know that most schools just aren't designed for hundreds of cars letting go of kids to run amok. what makes sense is better management of resources and designing routes to make a little better use of our time. i'm sure every bus driver out there has thought to themselves, 'why are they sending a school bus for a few students when a van would do?' what would be lovely is if some rich person donated a couple million dollars worth of buses to districts in need. those who like to make their donations known far and wide, though, like to bail out rioters instead. a lot of schools contract busing out to companies like first student, and that never makes the situation any better. if anything, problems are more likely to be even worse if any of these news reports -- years old as they are -- are any indication.

with what money, though? taxes, federal subsidies, a manufacturer's discount for buying several buses, and lottery money only goes so far in an area that's not obligated to operate under law except for a small number of cases.

THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH NOW DAYS THE NEWER BUSES ARE JUNK I KNOW BECAUSE I WORK ON THEM BUSES FROM THE 1980'S YOU COULD DEPEND ON THEM. AND THEY WAS EASY TO WORK ON AND PARTS WERE CHEAP I HATE THE NEWER BUSES TO MANY COMPUTERS ON THEM JUNK JUST JUNK.
