After watching your videos & a couple others I was ready to do my 1st fuel filter change on my '21 F250 super duty. With a full tank I changed the water separator 1st, but didn't reconnect the lines. Cracked open the fuel filler cap 1st to break the vacuum. Drained the filter without bothering to disconnect the line in like the manual suggests, total diesel drained into my tray was maybe 1/2 gallon Very simple & no mess.

Great update to your original video! (Me: ‘21, F250, 6.7) I waited until my fuel tank was down to 1/4 full. I invited my 15-yr old son to join me so he could learn the process. We disconnected the upper, engine fuel filter to further reduce the potential of siphoning. Additionally, we loosened the lower filter housing bolts to break the seal before opening the drain valve. Maybe it was overkill, but IT WORKED! No mess! Once the housing drained (less than 1/2 gal), it was over and we finished the task without an issue. I’m not sure of the politics with SPE, but I replaced the OEM valve with their billet fuel drain valve. Simple install, seems to be a solid product so far. Anyhow, thanks again for this update and sincere thanks for all of your excellent and informative videos. I continue to enjoy learning from you with your honest, no nonsense style. You’re an excellent teacher!

I've had diesels for over 20 years and every single one I've always did the fuel filters every other oil change, from the 7.3 to my current 6.7 which I've had all in between. No fuel issues whatsoever and my 6.0 was built for sled pulling/drag racing, always using only Motorcraft filters.

Personally I replace the secondary filter first. Sometimes I'll leave the lines disconnected. I unscrew the 2 bolts by the drain all the way, open the drain and then the middle bolt halfway and it usually drains completely in a few minutes.
@deanl4664 Жыл бұрын
I have found that loosening all but one bolt prior to opening the drain and then loosening the final bolt after fuel starts flowing, eliminates siphoning. This really saves time and mess for me.

Great timing! Did mine today. My buddy with a Ram stopped by when I had just started and was blown away by how easy and clean of a job it was. Less than a gallon drained. 4 ignition cycles and it started on the first try. Appreciate your videos.

I haven't had any issues with draining, I wait for the trickle and then start cracking the bolts, I find that when air enters the system the fuel completely stops. I also went to Home Depot and got a mortar mixing tub (on their website they call is "medium mixing tub"), they are pretty big and hold at least 8 gallons worth, it makes it easier and catches a lot of mess. The price is good too, under $10. Thanks for the video pal!

It is totally a vacuumed issue like that. I never noticed it before but I usually change my fuel filters on my 2017 alumaduty when I'm at a quarter tank. It stops draining. Last week I changed my filter w a full tank and it pissed out over a gallon and a half before I caught it. This is another awesome video thank you. I was hoping you would so something on this and BAM here it is. You are the man.

I'm concerned I may brake the fuel line, LOL. I tried changing the filter with nearly a full tank and found it works well around 1/8 of a tank of fuel. Less than a half gallon drains. Thank for the tip.

Yeah siphoning is a real problem on a setup like this. I wondered why you didn’t talk about it on the last video?

Arod, I tried changing fuel filters on my 2017 today, disconnected the fuel line at the top of the fuel conditioner, and still drained out like 2 gallons. So I just did it the way you did it like 5 years ago. Ended up wearing some of the fuel. But sometimes I change it and it’s fine. I never have less then 1/2 tank. 🤷
@crazy8acres651 Жыл бұрын
I fought that battle on my 2017. Just make sure you change the fuel filter with the tank at 1/4 or less and it stops pouring.

Would it be safe to say, to change the filter when you have a quarter tank? To prevent the weight of the fuel from pushing its way through? Thats always worked for me on mine.

I park mine on a slight slope with 1/2 tank or so and I don't have the siphoning issue or at least I haven't. Then let the filter drain and remove and dump in a bucket not too messy at all.

Dumping it and breaking the seal by loosening the 8 mm cage bolts and givin it a wiggle…wait till it’s mostly drained…then remove. Breaking the filter housing gasket seal seems to do the trick every time thus far

Aaron, wouldn't removing the filter in the engine compartment first stop the syphoning effect. It's basically accomplishing the same thing as disconnecting this fitting the shop manual is referencing.

I think you’re supposed too leave the clip half ways and it will go in. Taking the line off the clip does fully extend out. Thats just what I’ve realized on the newer trucks.
@Tomrod07 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if I’m doing it wrong, but I let it drain for a minute or two and it usually looks like straight diesel coming out of the drain so I break the filter bolts loose and it will stop draining and then I can take off the filter without making too much of a mess.

Since this typically comes with an oil change, any opinion on prefilling the oil filter? I've been told this by multiple Ford techs at one dealership. Citing that not priming the oil filter may cause spun rod bearings.
@DaFrostyG Жыл бұрын
I don't believe that, oil pressure is instant almost after start.
@importjunky3106 Жыл бұрын
@Kenny Smith Jr not in my experience. It takes noticeably longer to build pressure after an oil change.

I have 2016 6.7.. changed fuel filter once a year and today. Came to an issue of lower filter is not filling up when priming. Not getting fuel to come out at all. But pump sounds like is working. Any ideas what could be causing this?

@PowerStroke Tech Talk w/ARod Also double-checked that. Also using a motorcraft filter. I can't get thing any tighter. It's flush to the tab. Don't know a lot about these trucks but is possible that the fuel transfer pump went out? Is there even an in tank fuel pump in these trucks? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with my 2016 6.7 and I even took a yellow paint marker to mark the tabs. But that day could get my truck to prime, so $300.00 later towed to my Ford dealership, and they got it and there answer was it wasn't tightened enough. Sad thing is it was the same way I always did it.
@mervinnemedez7958 Жыл бұрын
@JERRY KNORR thank you for this. Atleast I know I'm not the only that had this issue. Tried working on it today again with a new sets of motor craft filters thinking I might just had a bad o ring from the the previous one, but still no luck. I'm Clueless at this point so I'll be taking mine to diesel shop on Monday since my ford dealership is booked 1 month out. Have a great night.
