Appreciate you showing what working the wheel is. Doing it too slowly may only show the worse worn-out components (if it shows anything at all). And good point on actually touching the joints to feel for wear. Just because you can't see or hear worn parts, doesn't always mean it's good!

Once jacked off the ground an inch, I take my 4 foot pry bar under the tire from the side and lift up. 98.79% of the time it will show a bad ball joint if there is one. Also check the steering shaft u-joints (or rag joint on older vehicles) along with the excessive play in the steering box itself. If the pitman arm doesn't move but your steering wheel is moving then there is an issue in that area.

I've cut apart a bad drag link tie rod (OEM) and found that the bearings are not worn, but it's actually the bearing cup moving and compressing the spring against the cap of the tie rod. From the bottom to top, you have the cap, a cool spring, a sintered steel cup bearing, the ball joint stud, then a forged steel bearing ring. Upon loading, these two bearing rings move apart, causing an annoying clunk. This happens until the spring is smashed flat and wears into that cap that is crimped on the joint.

Ugh , I have a 2017 f550 2 wheel drive 6.7 service truck with a crane on the back. I’ve had the truck since new it’s always had a little bit of vibration but since the miles have gotten on the truck it has about 130,000 now and the steering is just horrible shakes bad sometimes depending on road conditions. I’ve had some front end parts replaced but it’s still shakes pretty bad on the expressway. Also what are the bleeders on the spindles at the top??

My 13 F250 6.7, 59k miles, constantly eats up the front passenger side outer edge of the tire. Driver side shows slight wear on the outer edge but no where near as bad. I've had it aligned at the dealer where I bought it and at a local shop. Both places said the alignment is perfect. I refuse to believe that this is normal. Any thoughts? Its never been in a wreck. Its been this way since I bought it with 14k miles on it. I'm terrible with rotating my tires but I really have a hard time believing that the tires should wear this bad with only 8k miles on them. The rear tires still have 60% left and I tow regularly. Thanks for your videos!

I’ll be having to do this, I brought my 18 F350 DRW to have the front end and alignment checked at a local shop due to diagonal wear on about every other lug on the tires and they said “It all looks good should rotate the tires more” I could see some of it from lack or rotation ( guilty as charged on that) but not all of it.
@vais3
@vais3 2 жыл бұрын
Diagonal wear is commonly due to worn shocks. Unfortunately, OE shocks aren’t the longest lived.
@caseynelson3164
@caseynelson3164 2 жыл бұрын
@@vais3 those are on my radar also, just trying to decide if I want an upgrade or go back stock ish. Plan on doing all of it in one round changing shocks and checking all of the ball joints and end links. The truck has around 70k on it mostly highway. So hopefully it’s not too bad off yet.
@vais3
@vais3 2 жыл бұрын
@@caseynelson3164 you’re in the same position I was. I just went with Bilstein 4600s around that same mileage. Helped with the “Superduty Hop” too. The other thing to keep an eye on is the steering damper. OE is good here and don’t forget the sway bar end links. They shouldn’t easily move around. That’s usually a sign that they’re worn. Worn sway bar end links can create a knocking sound too.
@caseynelson3164
@caseynelson3164 2 жыл бұрын
@@vais3 thanks for the extra info. I made a semi conscious decision when I noticed the excess wear not to rotate the tires. I figured why destroy 6 tires when I can limit it to 2 until I find the issue. It was letdown when I brought it to the most recommended place in town for dealing with straight axle vehicles and got zero answers. This is my first one so it’s a learning curve for me. I’m used to lowered 2wd IFS. I can deal with those all day long. I was thrown for a loop when they told me that lack of rotation was the only issue. If I hadn’t watched the guy at least check the toe I would have accused them of not doing anything at all.
@vais3
@vais3 2 жыл бұрын
@@caseynelson3164 toe and camber adjustment is a dirty practice with some shops into sales over solutions. The Dana 60 Super has a set of bushings that set camber and caster. Toe is an adjustment of the tie rod links. Probably not the right term but I think you get the idea. At stock ride height or even a leveling kit, it never moves. What changes is caster, I doubt you have that issue. My bet is your shocks are internally worn. This is a simple driveway job over a few beverages if you like. Very straight forward at that. You may need to modify a wrench to hold the nut affixed to the upper shock dust shield but that’s about the most challenging part. As for not rotating, you did the right thing. Replace the shocks and inspect the sway bar end links for excessive play. Replace them if they move easily or the boot is blown. At your mileage, it might be worthwhile replacing the steering damper as well. All you need is a ball joint separator that you hit with a hammer to get one end off. The other is a simple bolt. If you have any questions, just ask. ARod or myself can help in any way possible.

Nobody ever says this but you can actually take and knock your tie rods loose turn a quarter turn.. "the ball in socket" so they contact and ware on a new spot.. will tighten them back up.. you can do it once maybe twice per set of tie rods rods.. will really keep them from getting sloppy fast...

Have you had any defective motorcraft drag links. I purchased the drag link, the corresponding tie rod end, the track bar, and the track bar ball joint, and the toe bar ball joints and still had death wobble after all new parts were installed. I rechecked all of the linkages and the brand new dealer purchased motorcraft drag link was popping and the bushing on the brand new dealer purchased track bar was compressing excessively. The dealer parts dept is saying their parts are not defective and that I am not installing them correctly. Have you or your subscibers come acoss this problem?
