Follow along with me as I scratch build a 1/13th scale 8th Doctor TARDIS model to fit with the Character Options range of 5.5" Doctor Who action figures.
This took me about 25 days spread over 6 weeks and once again, just like the K9 video, I had a bout of the flu during the process, so throughout the video, you can watch me in various states of unwellness!
As always, this was shot with extremely limited resources, just a single DSLR camera with the built in mic, no lights, no monitor or anyone to help for the most part. Yes, I like to struggle along and make things difficult for myself.
Interested in what I do or want to commission me to make you something? Then feel free to look here:

Thanks, that's really kind of you to say and (again) thanks for your comments regarding my Dad. It's appreciated. I hope that you feel that the video was worth the wait, apologies that a) it's very long, but I couldn't cut it down any more than it is without glossing over what I considered were "important" elements and b) the delay... Well, you can probably guess why that was.

PB Props Glad to be of service and plus I think the length of the video is better as it is as we (the viewers) really get to see how much of hardwork it is to make something like this hey, it's even better than the one's released by CO, it would amazing if we had sets like this... keep up the good work!

So sorry for the loss of your dad. I'm sure your Dad would be proud of you. You not only did a great job of the build, but kept it faithful to the show. I can't say any more at this point as I'm still down about hearing about your Dad.

Sorry about that, but thank you for your kind words about my Dad and the model, it's really appreciated. I'm sure Dad was proud of what I'm doing and he certainly loved seeing what I was making, just as I loved showing him the stuff as well. It'll be 21 weeks tomorrow (since he left) and I've just started on a new build project... It'll be weird not reporting my efforts to him.

I remember seeing this video when it was a few days old and loving it as much as I still do now. Every few months I come back and watch this whole video from start to finish. Your craftsmanship is something to be admired! I'm just going into college to study design technology and engineering when this blasted virus business is over and I think its for two reasons: not only was my dad a craftsman and my inspiration like your father was for you, but also when I saw this video I was immediately inspired! That TARDIS is STUNNING! I've been following your work since this and I'm sure your Dad is looking down at you with the upmost pride in everything you do. Well done and keep up the amazing work!
@PBProps
@PBProps 4 жыл бұрын
Well Henry, thank you so much for such a lovely comment, I appreciate that a lot, I honestly do. First off, congratulations on getting into college and furthering your education - this is something that you'll never regret and I hope that you go on to make (and create) great things, I'm sure you will. I'm also certain that your father, and the rest of your family, will take great pride in your achievements. If my Dad could see what I'm doing now, I hope he'd like what he sees. He's always been very supportive of me in this way and I do miss chewing over ideas with him. Thing is, one of the last things we talked about was my "business" and this channel. He told me to take the chance and give it a go. Now there have been many times when I felt that it just wasn't worth continuing, but to give it all up would make me feel like I'm letting him down, as well as those who have been kind enough to subscribe to me - so I push through and hope that I can make things of value. They may not be ground breaking or even Earth shattering, but for now, this is all I can do, given the circumstances that I'm in. Finally, I admire your tenacity. Watching a video of mine all the way through - and more than once. You must have an iron constitution!

Interesting to hear you've had a hand in the Character Options toy line, of which their Cyberman are currently falling off evilbay into my sweaty hands of late. Actually the Twice Upon a Time TARDIS was different to the original TARDIS because the roof has a sort of ridge coming off the edge of it (like the 3rd Doctor's TARDIS) but it is tall like the original. Plus the windows light up. I still can't get over how accurate it is just for a smallish model!

There is a whole sequence that I recorded as I was building this when it became obvious that he had not that long left, but I decided to cut it from the video because it was too near the knuckle, rather personal and I assumed that it would come across as seeking attention, so it had to go. Great informative video. Could never understand why the CO 4th Doctor Police Box had such a flat roof, on TV it had a slight sloping to it. Oh well ;D I own many CO Police Boxes, great models, all of them. ;D
@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad that you liked it. The original plan for the CO TARDISes was to make them all accurate to each Doctor, however, around the time they were designed, manufacturing costs shot up for various reasons beyond CO's control and so the tooling for the 7th Doctor TARDIS was used for all of the TARDISes instead to keep the cost down. The roof on the 4th Doctor TARDIS was modified and I wasn't too keen on the result, but there was little that we could do about it.
@MrSontaran3
@MrSontaran3 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clarifying that. The irony is that the CO 4th Doctor TARDIS would have been one of the best "Classic" Police Boxes in the whole range, if only they had kept the same style of roof as on the 7th Doctor / Hartnell Doctor models! I just love the black signage with white lettering on the 4th Doctor CO model, but hate that flatpack roof. C'est la vie :(

Fantastic video and build! If you use dishwasher rinse aid instead of water for your washes it flows better and you don't get tide marks. You can pick it up from the pound shops (bottle looks blue but the liquid inside is clear)
@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. You get the same effect as the one you mention by putting a tiny drop of washing up liquid in the water you're using - which is enough to break the surface tension that causes tide marks in the first place. I didn't bother here purely because the process I was using didn't really require it as I was flooding the surface with water anyway which gives you the same effect. I only had a tiny tide mark because I put down some "pure" colour on a dry area and forgot about it, but as you saw, I managed to get rid of it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, it's always appreciated!

@PBProps

For speed, because the build window was short and my Dad's health was failing (I needed to travel up to see him) I employed the use of a laser cutter for the backers and the window frames, otherwise that would have lengthened the process. Previously to this, I took the time to actually hand cut them. It was a difficult time and it's coming up for the fourth anniversary quite soon too. I'll always miss him.

On the original drawings, there is a dome up there, but on the prop, we can't really tell. In some shots it looks like there may be something up there, so as a compromise, a very shallow dome was added. No-one can be really sure about it though - but it does nicer with something there though.

This is amazing work. In have a unrelated question we'll kind of. I recently made a custom sonic from the he wand company remote due to the electronics being broken. So I gutted one of the toys and put it in the body of the remote changed out of he LED to green and custom painted in a maroon color. as well as changing the emitter from its blue to the river song toy sonic that's been painted a green which looks OK but when you light it up you can see the paint marks. But the paint I used was the citadel model paint which seems to have worked well but is a bit tacky what's the best way to fix that.
@PBProps
@PBProps 4 жыл бұрын
Try using an aerosol spray clear lacquer over the paint and allow that to set. It should do the trick. As for the emitter, I'd suggest airbrushing your new colour on as that'd prevent the visible brush marks. You can pick up a cheap set up from eBay for not very much, but you do get what you pay for.

@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
Having just the one door makes the model more stable and less likely to accidentally break apart, thus giving it more strength. It could be done with two doors, but we never saw both doors open, so rather than doubling the work, we opt for just one door. If it were a full sized box, yes, it'd have two doors or four if you do the back.

Sorry about your dad, he sounds like an awesome guy. Speaking of awesome, that tardis is absolutely fantastic! You've inspired me to build my own version of this from balsa wood, but I'm rubbish at drawing up plans to the right size so is there any kind of template that I can use to cut my wood pieces. I'm basically planning to copy yours but out of balsa wood. Another quick question, did the windows on this version of the tardis light up? I seem to remember them glowing but none of the images show the windows lit at all. Anyway, keep up the good work and I hope to hear from you soon👍
@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
The plans for the prop can be found in a google image search, but if you have the book "Regenerations" - you can find them in there. Best of luck to you on your build. Per your other question... The windows on the full scale prop could light up, but for the most part this function wasn't used, though they do appear lit during the model sequences as the TARDIS flew through the time vortex, thus this was a nod to that.

@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
Answers: 1/ The scale is actually 5.5" = 6' @ 1:1 scale. This then translates into a scale ratio of 1:13. The full sized plans were then simply divided by 13 with a bit of give and take here and there to make it easier to build without loads of stupid sizing. For example, if something translated into 12.78mm, I'd round it up to 12.8mm. 2/ The styrene used for the walls was 1.5mm thick.

For a commission on a short deadline, I have the wall pieces laser cut if it's a small model like this one, but if I have more time, I build the walls like I would a full sized one; lots of strips cut up and laid down on a backer plate.

@PBProps

@@KapybaraKSP If you watch the video, there are several scenes in which you can see me cutting up the plastic into strips. The only tips that I can give you are these; take your time, apply enough pressure - but don't force the cut, ensure you have a sharp blade and measure your cuts accurately. Making the wall panels in this fashion, like the rest of the box, is really time consuming. I don't have a laser cutter either, so I had to find a company to do it - it saved me several days worth of work. If the build was for me, I'd have done it the slow way - by hand.
