This is a full walk through of nearly every step of the restoration process for a fibreglass 1:1 replica K9 prop as produced by This Planet Earth Ltd.
Due to the limits of the budget, this is a nonfunctional, completely static prop with no electronics.
The entire project was undertaken during the February of 2017 and filmed on the most basic of equipment, shot with no lapel mic, lights or even someone to help. It was edited on a trial version of PowerDirector 14.
K9 (and the K9 image) is the copyright of BBC Television, Bob Baker and Dave Martin.
The "K9 and Company" theme is the copyright of BBC Television.

By the time I got to the end and you congratulated those who got to the end of the video, seeing as at that point I felt like I'd only watched a 10 minute video, I assumed it was a joke. This is fascinating and great video! I still have one of This Planet Earth's K9 which I bought nearly 20 years ago. Body wise it's still fine apart from a small chip near the nose where the hoover fell and hit it. The ears are the biggest pain in the rear. They seem to break just by walking past it.
@PBProps
@PBProps 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching my first KZbin video - things have (slightly) improved since this was made. If you ever get around to repairing your dog, the paint used was Halfords Rover Gun Metal Grey - they do "touch up" pens, so that may work for you on the chip damage that it has.

Trying to remember back five years, but the silver was possibly "Stardust" and the bumper paint was the black vinyl spray, usually found opposite the main spray colours in the specialised section, all from Halfords.

@@PBProps Thank you. Your channel has inspired me to rework my channel which has actually been a work in progress for so long. I had a phone call from a film company last year and they said (whilst laughing): "Wow... we just love your deliberately bad KZbin videos"! I just laughed along and pretended that my one-take unscripted poorly-lit videos were meant to be funny! I love your work, and anytime you want to come and learn some armouring skills... no charge, all I ask is that you please bring one box of Jammy Dodgers. By the way, in your video you played that BBC K9 track which caused me to down tools as I recalled I had that on a BBC Cassette along with Hitch Hikers Guide and other TV themes... back in 82? That took me right back, but then I spent the whole time trying not to type "I became depressed after I bought the rights to K9" (Alan Partridge). There... its out the bag now, like a lanced boil, I feel better. Thank you again, REALLY great motivator for me. BRAVO 🏆

Oh gosh, I'm the same with the video production side. I'm filming it all my own, add libbing for the most part off the cuff - which is why I wander off topic or forget to say important bits, have the world's worst camera, an on-board crappy mic, no space to actually get the angles I want - can never get close enough due to the limitations of the lens I have and only recently did I get some lights. Often I find myself getting carried away with the work that I actually forget to film anything. When you consider that I went to film school, you'd think I'd learnt nothing. Thing is, it's so much easier when you're not the only person doing ALL of the work. I would absolutely love to visit you at your workshop - maybe we should talk at some point. Thanks so much for the offer! And yes, I'll bring some Jammy Dodgers!
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 5 жыл бұрын
@@PBProps Thats funny, I honestly could have typed the first part of that. We have the same issues. Wandering off is clearly in your personality as is mine... but TO BE HONEST, thats why I enjoyed your video. Embrace your inner 'concentration-butterfly' for it is the antidote to those REALLY ****** annoying fast-cut KZbin videos, which are so over polished, the passion and energy was long wrung out! I prefer to feel like I am listening to a real person. After all, most of us have all arrived here because TV has become mostly boring and predictable no? But some channels are even more annoying than the TV, so PLEASE keep it real. I bought a Moondog Anamorphic lens for my sisters' old i-phone and a shiny new mic, so I am really looking forward to soon releasing some of the best quality excruciatingly 'riveting' videos... where going off-topic will be embraced, and will perhaps offend a few. I just subscribed to your channel... now no pressure, but if you don't subscribe to mine... the kitten gets it! 😂

I’m currently building myself a smaller replica that can fit on the shelf. i enjoyed this video and it will be very useful for me to jog my memory if I need to when I rebuild a full size version or to try new things that I didn’t do the first time round.

@PBProps
@PBProps 6 жыл бұрын
In the video, you'll see me starting to take the head apart, it is in two pieces; the main body of the head and a top lid - but the lid is sealed on. You can break the seal as you saw me start doing, with a screw driver, but the only reason that I stopped was because the casting was so thin that there was a massive danger of me breaking it. Had this not been the case, I would have continued the operation. You might be lucky, your dog's head may be better cast and not have the issues that I faced. Best thing that I can suggest you do is try it out and see what the state of play is.

Really really enjoyed this, the presentation, your narration, every thing was superb! I have heard some bad things about This Planet Earth, and I can see here cutting corners and using pretty cheap materials, and most of the things on there site is over few thousand, and they are little more than life size action figures. Would you say K.9. Is an easy build ? As I have always wanted to make one. I look forward to more of your projects! All the best.
@PBProps
@PBProps 7 жыл бұрын
Regarding the robot dog; I guess it all depends on your level of skill as to whether or not it is easy, though I would suggest that K9 is a basic or simple build. If you you were to buy the parts and then just put it all together, then yes, it's a really easy job. However, if you were to scratch build this, it's still quite a simple job, but obviously it takes more time and effort. Good luck with your build, just dive in and get started - that's the greatest step you can take! Oh, and thanks for your kind comments about the video. Much appreciated.

@PBProps
@PBProps 2 ай бұрын
Any advice? Yes, of course! Pull up a seat and let me tell you a story. Pay attention now. Right, are you comfortable? Then I shall begin... Take the hole that you've cut out in the side of your dog and line it with something called "Hockey Stick Trim" or "P Profile Edging Strip" - as that's what was originally used and you can still get it to this day from any shop that sells plastic extrusions. Once you have that glued into in place as your screen surround, mount some blocks on the inside of your dog, just behind the strip (on the blind side) and then mount a square panel of plastic (acting as the actual screen) to that. This has to be flush with the back edge of your edge strip and hey presto, you've got a screen! Ta daaaaah... Hope that helps you out.

I'm planning on making a full scale RC K9. Wondering about how to build the body, I was initially thinking balsa in particular thin around the head to get the curved shaping but wondering if a straight fibre glass approach would be the way to go. Any thoughts?
@PBProps
@PBProps 7 жыл бұрын
You could make it from a number of materials really; thin sheet MDF, Expanded PVC sheet or styrene. You can shape all of these until your heart's content and they are light weight, though you could back it up with fibre glass on the inside for extra strength. Balsa is okay and you could strengthen it with fibre glass at a push, but it's not something I'd entertain really - though that is not to say that you shouldn't as this is just my personal preference. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, go for a complete fibre glass casting, but this would require you to make a tooling master and a mould from that, then a casting from your mould. Or you could keep your eyes peeled for castings that are already made - they do turn up on eBay from time to time. Good luck with your build!

Wonderful video, do you have any approximate dimensions on the rings used in his ears, his ears overall and, the tail used for K-9? All the blue prints I have found don't really say. I've come across a couple of ears available on Shapeways website that look pretty good but not sure if I want to pay that much when I can make them myself.
@PBProps
@PBProps 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The ear rings were 12mm and 18mm (1/2" and 3/4") and the tail one was 25mm (1"). Personally I wouldn't bother with printing them as you could make them cheaper and faster yourself, plus they'd look and be more accurate this way. Good luck!

@PBProps
@PBProps 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I really can't remember. For this one, I just traced around the existing ear and duplicated it. All is not lost though, there are several shots in this video of me working on the ears with the mesh laying on my cutting board - now the small squares on the board are half and inch wide with the larger squares being one inch. Knowing this, I'm sure you'd be able to get a fairly decent ball park figure.

Firstly, if ever you would like a 57 year old, highly skilled from all sorts of things eg ex wife of 17 years had a car body shop? I did a lot there, electrical engineer? Highly multi skilled due to what I now know as ADHD after my son’s diagnosis. It’s hereditary. I can hyper focus on things to perfection. I also see purpose in things that others don’t? Re purposing things all the time. I see something in component parts? It’s the autistic side of ADHD. I spent periods in hospital due to Crohn’s and now all add ons inc Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and Ankylosing Spondylitis. Very annoying and cause of early retirement of a job I loved. I would just love to help save some of these props from things I loved as a kid. Blake 7 , Dr Who, Space 1999. (Should be a 2099 version ❤️) Plus more. I have a workshop also. If ever in the future you are interested in a chat?? One question though. With technology moving forward, can you make something “too” good?? I am sure that with a name like mine? You could find me if at all interested in a chat? Love your videos Kindest regards Rich Tame
@PBProps
@PBProps Ай бұрын
Thanks for the offer, that's really generous and I know all about hyper focussing, that's what my family call "designer mode" - so they tend to leave me to my own devices when this happens. Can you makes something that's too good? Quite simply, yes. With or without technology. The reason is down to the individual observing the object in question. People have different standards or expectations. For me, usually everything I make, I feel is not good enough - but that's because I'm too close to it, so I need distance of time to re-evaluate. But in the same light, I've often had people say how things are way better than they'd imagined them to be. If you want a chat, my email address is in the "About" section - I'm always happy to chat to people. Thanks for watching!

Any scriptwriter will tell you that one of the key tricks with writing a script is making sure you use words you use in regular conversation. Otherwise, you end up tripping over your words throughout your narration - which is exactly what you've done. Yes, it looked great on paper (perfect for, say, a magazine article) but it came out awkwardly when reading aloud. Worse, it sounds like you are reading words and trying not to slip over them - precisely what you were trying to avoid! It's a real shame as I find the restoration process (which you do quite expertly) really fascinating (and your non-read commentary while you're working is wonderful!)
