Solo canoeing the Brazos in 1997, an overweight game warden noisily disturbed the silence and smoothly flowing flat water by motoring up close and demanding to see my fishing license. No smile. No good morning. No expression of friendliness whatsoever. I had no fishing gear with me and told him so. He didn’t like that and I thought he might order me to the bank for a search, but he just glared at me like I would buckle under his steely gaze and confess to crimes I had not committed. Then he abruptly motored away as noisily and rudely as he had arrived.
