Here's my audio reconstruction of the 1975-1983 PBS theme song of "The MacNeil/Lehrer Report". This is a corrected version (and hopefully the definitive version on KZbin) of the previous two mixes available on KZbin, which you can watch below for comparison:

Something about this version of the theme...it sounds like it's the theme song to a 70s detective show (and I mean that as a compliment, Anything to make a news program look or sound Badass is a plus)

Bernard Hoffer's "funky theme" sounds better than the 1983 orchestrated version we've all come to know.

FYI, the program debuted locally as The Robert MacNeil Report on Thirteen (WNET) on October 20, 1975. Six weeks later, it would be seen on many PBS stations nationwide. Then on Monday, September 6, 1976, it became The MacNeil/Lehrer Report. Seven years later, to complete against the network news programs (CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight), the half-hour, one story in-depth program was extended to a full hour. Thus, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour was born. The rest, as they say, is Public Television history.

Beginning in 1980, a male took over as the announcer and the announcement changed to: For a transcript, send 2 dollars to "The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, Box 345, New York, NY 10101. The MacNeil/Lehrer Report was produced by WNET and WETA. They are solely responsible for it's content." then the funding credits which varied through the expansion and format change in 1983.

Hot damn! I can't even definitively spot the splices. I think there's one around the 1:43 mark, but it's so smooth I'm not sure. In my mix, the first 22 seconds came from the opening of an episode. You must have found that segment from the closing version of the theme, which is a little different.

I like both, but to be fair, I was born in 1981, so I have a *lot* of memories of the orchestra version, so I’m a little biased lol
