The World's Largest Native Hawaiian Plant Nursery | PBS HAWAIʻI

College friends Rick Barboza and Matt Schirman started collecting Native Hawaiian plants back in 1999. What started as a collection of a few plants and seedlings has grown into Hui Kū Maoli Ola, the largest Native Hawaiian nursery in the world. The team has a large retail operation and a fullscale landscaping service with the goal of restoring native habitats.

I am from Japan. Sometimes at a farmers market, branches of Pulumeria are sold " From Hawaii!!" I had no idea Pulumerias are not native to Hawaii... loved this video! So rich in information!

Wow. Never knew the back story to this company. I buy these native plants from home depot pretty often. Such an interesting and inspiring story. Absolutely live to see local people with successful companies doing great and positive work. The world needs it. I am an avid gardener pretty much my whole life, and just love the process of a tiny seed growing into a massive plant/tree. Just incredible. And it gives you sustenance. Life. Joy. Years ago (I'm 71, BTW) a friend of mine's brother who was in the navy was stationed in Hawaii. He said in his observations of the flora (plant life) growing in the wild, that even the WEEDS were pretty! Wild flowers were blooming everywhere, like perpetual springtime. Seems I read somewhere, there are several micro-climates on the same islands, from desert (or semi-arid) to pure tropical. I wish he had been more interested in them and had brought back some pictures. 🌴🌵
