If there’s any confusion he’s not talking about connecting yourself _just_ to a laptop or desktop, it’s about connecting yourself in a circuit to “the ground.” The plugged in computer (or electric outlet 3rd prong) is a gateway to the ground, through your home’s wiring. By completing a circuit to the ground (grounding yourself), you are preventing static buildup & ESD discharge. Any excess ions that _would be_ accumulating on your body get transmitted immediately through the cable into the ground. (Think of the earth’s soil like a giant heatsink for electrons)

Thank you! Great hack with the laptop charging cable. A lot of videos I've seen about grounding neglect to mention that the power supply for your PC has to be plugged in to gain the benefit. If you are building a computer from the ground up (pun intended) you don't usually start the build by plugging in and mounting the power supply.

Thank you for this great video! Another tip. You don't necessarily need to touch the laptop charger with you hands. You can step on it with you barefoot to ground yourselves and that will keep you hands free.

Two important facts: Older houses probably aren't grounded, even if you have 3 prong plugs. Also ALL electronics plugs (like the one he showed) have the ground on the outside ring. You have to understand how to read the plug symbol to know if the ground is on the outside or the inside. Moral to the story, KZbin "experts" can kill you (or wreck your equipment).

this is easily testable by finding a common item such as a power strip with a ground LED indicator. If the light doesn't luminate when you plug in the power strip to the socket, that socket is either faulty (doesn't ground like it should) or the power strip is defected.

@@rotatorcuffs8140 I'd say houses in the 60's would be grounded. Not sure when exactly, but probably the latter half. I have a ranch built in 1957 with an addition attached to it in in 1967. The addition has grounding wires and 3 prong plugs, not the rest of the house though.

Only a couple of those options are grounding yourself. Most techs skip this process by resting their arm on the metallic points on the case (it brings your individual polarity charge neutral to what your working on).

Yea, so basically all you are doing is utilizing the ground that the charger uses. Which just connects the outer metal end of the connector to the bottom ground hole in you wall, effectively using your houses ground as your own personal ground.

The charger is always on when it's plugged in, it's the inside that you shouldnt and can't touch unless you cut through the grounded metal around it. It's the same reason you can touch the tip of phone charger and be fine

I personally think it's advisable to switch the power supply off first tho. The other tips seem useful although a lot of people have their own methods and different opinions compared to your own. I will see what is available to me and use them to the best of my abilities so to speak.

Luckily the keyboards on laptops are not too bad, typically a single ribbon cable and you don't need to touch many internal components. As long as you don't move after you ground yourself the first time it should be fine. Usually you build up static charge from walking on carpet

Incorrect! Often the DC output of power supplies are 'floating' and can measure up to 70 Volts or more above ground/earth. I have actually received electric shocks from these plugs whilst touching the plug and a computer case. I have also seen sparks between plug barrels and sockets they are being plugged into because many power supplies rely on the device (computer) to ground the power supply. To test if what you are saying is true, you must unplug the power supply and measure if there is continuity between the ground pin and the plug barrel with a multimeter. If there is - fine. If there is no continuity, then the plug barrel is floating and can't be used to 'ground' you.

I agree. If you're working on a desktop, just install the power supply, then plug into the wall and keep the power supply off. The third prong is connected to earth regardless of which position the power switch is in.

If i connect an official apple extension cord (that has a ground prong) to an apple charger and I plug that into the wall and touch the magsafe tip, do I essentially ground myself? It's getting into the colder season and the humidity is fading away and I constantly have to tap my old mac mini that is sitting on my desk just to let some of that static out before I touch my keyboard.

Hi. I have a question regarding this topic, hope you don't mind me asking. I need to clean my PC thoroughly, but I don't have any way of keeping the PSU plugged to an outlet while I do so (nor do I have a wrist-band). However I have a voltage regulator with an outer casing made 100% out of metal. If I connect said power regulator to a 3-slot grounded outlet, and I touch it every now and then (without switching the regulator on), would that make me grounded and allow me to touch my components without fear of discharge? I never mind questions! But for your scenario I would honestly just touch your case and try not to walk around. You mainly build up static electricity in your body when you walk since your feet glide across the floor (especially carpet). So just set everything up and sit down and make sure to touch your case before you touch any component. Then if you need to get up and walk or grab something just be sure to touch your case again before you continue

For your voltage regulator I'm not 100% sure the outer casing is connected to the ground slot. If it is then you can use that too (and often it is) but it's up to you!

So I get up from my pc and move around the house frequently, I come back and touch the mouse/keyboard or metal of the desk which sends a static charge and temporarily disables the mouse or keyboard. This grounding fixes that issue?

On or off the ground or “earth” as you may call it will still be connected. The switch will only stop current from flowing through the hot wire, but the ground is always connected :)

I don’t know how the power supply would be creating any static electricity and if any did exists it would be spread to the case and/or ground from the outlet via the power supply anyways. Static noise/ white noise is likely caused by the port, try to hold or push in your audio cable, if it’s loose and not snug in the port that can create static.

I'm a bit lost. My new pc has the usual on/off button, and an "I/O" switch at the back of the computer. (Near the plug inlet.) I'm using a power bar--I always switch that off at night. Questions: Keeping the desktop plugged into the (grounded) wall socket; with the pc power button "off"--Do I switch the "I/O" toggle to the off position? I have no idea why this pc has such a thing. It's something new to me. Why the customary on/off button; plus the "I/O" switch? Thanks for any replies.

If I understand correctly, you’re talking about the I/O on the power supply on the back of the PC? That is the hard off switch. So that cuts any power from going from the wall socket to your power supply. The button on the front of your case just signals the computer itself to spin up and turn on, even if it has power from the supply it can remain off, but that button on the front case tells your pc to start drawing power essentially.

If I may; one more question: I hope it's not too painfully obvious: Before opening my pc; (1) The "hard off" switch should be in the off position? No, it’s purpose is to protect your components as you build. Your body will build up static electricity when you move, this can be simply your shirt rubbing against your arm. Over time that can create a charge in your body and you could potentially send that to a part of the component that would damage it.

My friend test my pc if it's ground or not but he said it's normal and we even put grounding rod connected to screw in the area of psu. Can't possibly my PC since I already tried the wireless keyboard. For 2 years I only experience this recently. Is polyfill also conduct static? since I mod my keyboard putting polyfill inside, tho the other one don't have but still has static. The keyboard is aluminum btw.

Can I just run a wire between my case and the ground socket? I notice that sometimes when I touch my KEYBOARDS that are plugged into a USB hub the computer reboots. Very annoying. My Lian Li case (all metal and glass) has always caused static discharges when plugging something into the front, too, so I had to put electrical tape around the front sound jacks and USB ports.

Sounds like you might have an electrical issue with your wall socket… your power supply is already plugged into the wall so it receives the ground from that and so does every component the power supply plugs into, so that would end up being every component in your PC. Not sure that’s a static discharge…from an all metal and glass cases, that may just be straight electricity from something hot touching your case? Not sure

It won’t be connected to your house ground, devices with 2 prongs typically have their own surge protection inside so they don’t require grounding.

It needs the 3 plugs, since you're basically just tagging along to your houses ground through your charger. If not just use your PC case if it has bare metal on it.

I wouldn’t use a Laptop charger for ground. The barrel connect plug could be positive outside and negative inside. The center pin is not always hot. There are electronic devices where the center pin is negative and the outer barrel is positive.

You can plug the USB cable to anything but just understand whatever you plug it into it's going to use that devices ground method so make sure it has a ground. When you plug it into the pc it uses your PCs ground from that port.

Anti static gloves will work, but just a normal generic latex gloves can still build up static on the outside of the glove is it’s rubbed against materials, say if you put your hand in your pocket to grab a tool.

Luckily a lot of these components like motherboards have special coatings to help avoid static shock. The more you deal with hardware the more comfortable you become, trust me my first pc build took me like 5 hours because I was so scared to touch any components. Check out my video on how to hold each component to safely handle the hardware :)

Most of the time yea, and a lot of components have protection built in. From experience though I have fried a ram stick before due to static charge.
