I think the solution to friendship is to remove gaining friendship by walking and double (or more) friendship gain for other sources (battling, defeating gym leaders, grooming, vitamins etc) so you actually have to engage with the mechanic instead of just walking in circles

​@@mechashadow nah that's a great solution. It just requires you to play the game to evolve them, and once you get far enough in the game you can grind vitamins and grooming to do it faster. It works ten times better, at least

The universal randomizer has options that replace pokemon with pokemon around similar base stats along with trainer options that make pokemon over a certain level. Also in the universal randomized it produces a changelog that can be read if you want to look ahead at gym leader or champion teams

In a vanilla game, friendship evolutions incentive avoiding being knocked out. You sort of lose that extra incentive in a Nuzlocke.

The beginning of this video shows why BST mapped randomising is the way to go. Basically every pokemon gets replaced by one with very similar base stat total. Meaning that early trainers aren’t going to come around with a legendary, and you get a pokemon with 2 evolutions as starter that has roughly the strength of a starter pokemon. I agree a viability rating is better, but BST randomising is…incredibly easy. UniversalRandomizer literally has a function for it

if friendship evos got replaced w level up evos, i think eevee should instead evolve into espeon with a sun stone, umbreon with a moon stone, and sylveon with a shiny stone (since 2 other fairy types need it to evolve, it would make sense to use it for eevee into sylveon too)

I’ve had an idea similar to your tiering system for randomized nuzlockes for a while but instead of having Pokémon randomize based on what part of the game you’re in they would randomize into anything of the same tier, so D tier Pokémon only randomize into other D tier Pokémon and S tier Pokémon only become other S tier Pokémon. This could still cause the issue of people getting too good of Pokémon early on and wiping the game which could potentially be counteracted with having certain fights have chances of rerolling into higher tier Pokémon, like if the champion has 5 A tier Pokémon and 1 S tier Pokémon it would have 5 Pokémon with a 75% chance to be A tier and 25% chance to be S tier and one guaranteed S tier. This obviously would have issues that would need to be worked out but I’m curious on your thoughts on it in general

There’s a thing where mons randomize into those with similar BST already as a function. Combining that with increasing enemy level by 50% or more, you can suffer even in a randomizer

What Dustin said universal poke rando already has that feature. You can also make it randomize gym leaders randomize with themes. Lots of features that are never used or overlooked and then complained about.

For the randomizer, why not pick popular move sets from showdown for each Pokémon

Because you can give a caveman a phone but you can't expect him to make a phone call. The AI in these games largely do not know how to use a lot of the moves, some of them have complex use cases that can't be accounted for. Like Rock Tomb for example. If the AI doesn't see a kill, even if it's the highest damage move the AI has, they will *only ever* use it for speed control *if* you're faster. If you're slower, weak to rock tomb but not dead to a single hit, you're totally safe, and that shouldn't be the case, but changing that is far outside the realm of a randomizer tool

Does Jan not know that randomizers already have a "Similar Strength" setting? What it does is that it replaces any single pokémon with another one with similar stats when possible. Of course it isn't as sophisticated as the viability ranking method, but it definitely has a curve and is the best way to play randomlockes. (If that's what you're looking for)

He actually addressed that around the ten minute mark, a bit before. BST is an unreliable metric because there's a lot of variance at the same BST. It's better than nothing but you can do better.

The randomizer I use has a setting labeled “similar strength” where I think it uses BST to categorize Pokémon which isn’t the best measurement but it’s better than legendaries in the early game and shit mons in the elite 4. Also something Jacob NEEDS to enable “enforce final evolutions at level ___”. It’s so fucking boring to see baby Pokémon in the elite 4

If I recall have a Pokemon defeat other Pokemon does increase friendship, same with having intended Pokemon in first slot and should improve other friendship increases, sooth bell to increases friendship like first slot and too should improve other friendship increases, giving held items to hold which is effective with the sooth bell, specific berries, messages and other kind of methods and teaching TM moves(was better with unlimited TMs). Do all these right and it's easy although those that have other requirements are a little tougher.

I gotta say, watching this video makes it very obvious that Jan has never used the modern Randomizer himself, he got all of his knowledge from watching other Streamers play with the least balanced/most Content-oriented settings. Because you can absolutely get a randomizer with a fairly reasonable difficulty curve by using actual options instead of Max Random.

Friendship evolution is not garbage. It's is easy to evolve friendship Pokemon without grinding if you do it right. Back in ruby and sapphire my brother almost leveled up his shiny Zubat/Golbat to level 100 and asked for my help and with so few level I got it to evolve for him, which I normally get mine to evolve not long after mine become Golbat some times the next level after start level of evolution

Im fine with friendship evolutions, except when they hang on with 1 HP, increase crit rates, etc. I think it's nice to not know when my Pokemon will evolve, it's a bit more natural to just let it happen whenever it will. And Nuzlockes are a self imposed challenge, so you can just make your own personal rule to not use friendship evolutions until a certain point. I don't think they really need a mechanical overhaul.

I at first rolled my eyes when I heard the voice acting take, but I have zero interest in actually reading anything, and these games have way too much dialogue now... But I think if I could listen to characters talk, instead of reading I would be more engaged. Because I have destroyed my brain by playing video games, and also having something else on the side happening for the last like 23 years of my life reading is too boring for me. XD Well also I guess the content is just boring. Like Diamond and Pearl I remember like reading books and stuff in the library, because the lore was actually interesting.
