Thanks so much for your thoughtful and intelligent feedback! We're looking forward to adding more cockpit functionality, and developing our lore and vision. Hoping soon we will have done enough to sway you over. Regardless, loved the video and content and we will continue to put 100% of our effort into making the best VR Mech Game we possibly can!

I'm trying not to nit pick but here are two things that I want to focus on: Casual play (that is, joining a random server) isn't focused on tactics. The communication is set to All Talk and that tends to favor casual run/gun/smash gameplay. The couple leagues (VML and Mercenaries) have more strategic and competitive gameplay. If you've played on the multiplayer servers enough, someone would recognize your name and invite you. Second, the "slow" and "floaty" gameplay is something I actually like. Understanding that your mech (grinder) is the size of a building helps you when you are trying to move (another criticism of yours). It takes a lot of inertia and fuel unless you start to recognize the movement of your grinder (eg. using the "up-step" of your grinder to lift off instead of using fuel as you are falling or moving in a different direction). A lot of pilots are advanced in age (I'm talking 30-60 years old). I'm thinking this is due to the slow and deliberate nature of your grinder. It's not a twitch-mech shooter...and I welcome that. Ultimately, this is a small group of devs who've managed to make an incredibly immersive mech battle sim on both PC and Meta products. Too bad it didn't fit your criteria for Mech games.

Honestly, the last 20 seconds or so of the video is basically my internal monologue anytime mech games and/or VR is brought up. I never got to own/play Steel Battalion (the price tag _was_ a little steep for teenage me at the time), but I read many, _many_ articles on the game and knew it would be my dream game if I ever got it. Unfortunately, the closest I ever got was going to a coworkers' place for a hang out and he had his game, in box, with the blue(? I think blue was the first gen controller, green was 2nd IIRC. Too lazy to fact check myself.) buttons in 2012. It still pisses me off that when Steel Battalion came out, people ragged on the game for its price point into being a _godsdamned mech pilot_ and how it wasn't worth it. Then, a few years later those same games journalists were so jazzed about that same price point for Rock Band! Screw you journalists, you only liked that because it let you relive your garage band days where you were always one practice away from getting signed to a label and living that "SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK & ROLL!" life that you missed out on because you wanted to play "Just The Tip" and after the oopsie-daisy had to get a real job until you managed to weasel into a writing position for the Nerd York Times! Ahem. What I mean to say is, I absolutely agree. Steel Battalion lifted straight up into VR, with the controller being represented in game. Hell, with the raspberry pi's and all that, coupled with 3d printers and the relative ease (compared to the Steel Battalion days, anyways) of making your own PCBs, support for a homemade SB controller would be sick! I want a stompy robot game that's more calculating and cerebral than a twitch-shooter with a robot theme.

Yes, sir, steel battalion and hawkin come up on a regular basis along with Titan Fall and everything else. The greatest thing is that both experiences are still developing and still striving for a better experience. If somebody asked the differences between the two. As far as the feel. One is a Lumbering fortress or a very tall, effective siege machine. The other is an effective fast attack mechanized unit. Thank you for the re-review of IR. You also gave me a better perspective on Vox, and I think I'll try it out again. I hope to see you in the game, either one everyone wants to know.!

I've been working on designing a VR game for a bit now but I'm your average kind of shit newbie coder and busy with other, more lucrative and formative projects so I doubt I'll get to start it anytime soon. The 3 main goals of it are 1: To have a "Pilot and Mech" difference similar to Titanfall 2 but with more pilot vulnerability and a focus on Deus-Ex style stealth and progression as to make sure you are outside the mech frequently enough that the world feels that much smaller while in the mech without making "Outside of Mech" gameplay too common, since it isn't really the point. 2: To allow for an in-depth customization system that allows you to create and use different types of controls as you progress monetarily, with cheap mechs starting out with a hand crank and lever to control a side mounted gun's aim with an open cockpit while later on you get to do the thing from (blue alien) Avatar where you stick your arms into slots and puppet the arms yourself, protected from damage yourself by solid steel between your seat and the enemy, viewing via screen projection and manually placed cameras. 3: To make sure it feels like you're a person in a cockpit, not just a camera. You'd have a full body model that can move around the cockpit if it's large enough and have to manually enter it before and during missions via some means you designed on the mech or on your character (Putting a ladder on the back vs having a jump boost upgrade). You're meant to always feel fragile, with the sole thing keeping you alive being the mech you're in. The whole experience comes down to a single moment I want to share, being the idea of having a fancy camera cockpit that suddenly goes offline as a bus-sized sword goes through it, BARELY missing you by an inch, the metal of the control panel burning away where it was cut into and the VR experience of seeing such a large sword move so quickly from feeling like a game object with scaling only relative to your own mech and distance, to a bus sized piece of metal that just sheared through the right side of your mech, forcing you to quickly make a decision as to how you're going to salvage the situation.

Dead on arrival. The mech theme is dead because it's niche. The only way for mech stuff to survive is to be part of something bigger. Like a vehicle combat game where you drive ground, air, and naval vehicles. So basically a tank or a chopper against mechs or whatever. Mechs should now only be part of something. You can still fill them out with whatever idea you wanted, but mech-focused games aren't popular anymore. Titanfall 2 is the only one barely alive.
@givemepen0

i recently started a project with an extremely similar philosophy. I think the big appeal of a mech vr game is actually being in the cockpit, and having motion controls to both control the limbs of the mech itself directly, as well as to interact with buttons, switches, levers etc. within the cockpit. I also have an interest in segments where you need to exit the mech. My main dismay towards current implementations of a mech game is they're all pvp arena combat, where as i would be much more interested in having a solid storyline and campaign, akin to titanfall 2's campaign. I like the idea of these grand scale events and cutscenes taking place as you've described, it makes me think of the Half Life Alyx scene where you disconnect the cables and that big combine prison ship thing collapses, those grand scale scripted events are some of the coolest things to experience in vr

@@damsen978 Get your gross boats out of mah mech games! And who cares about popular, especially as an indie/solo dev, if you're doing it to get rich, might as well play the lottery, join a band, or making movie auditions. The number of indie games that actually blow up and can actually support a solo dev (or small team) with no outside support is pretty damn small. It's also why we have all these damn "early access" asset flip/scam games, people trying to cash in on popular/in demand genres for a quick buck and swindling moon-eyed gamers. Focus should be made on just making the best game you can in whatever genre/niche you have a passion for, instead of making it just to make a couple bucks. You'll make a better game, and might end up doing better than a game that you try to wrap up ASAP since your heart isn't in it. For example, I could make a battle royale or hero shooter game, but I'll be ready to move on _way_ before I would making a love letter to Resident Evil 1-3. Classic survival horror is much more niche than BR right now, but that higher level of polish from enjoying what I'm making means that the few fans of survival horror that end up trying it will be more likely to recommend it to other fans, and on and on. I might only make a couple hundred sales, but I'll be on their radar for the next game I make, especially if it's also a survival horror. Compare that to my less polished, potentially buggier BR that I shove out the door. I might sell 800-1000 copies, but if most get refunded (and rightly so) and get a lot of negative reviews, I'm potentially looking at less money earned _and_ an uphill struggle gaining momentum on promoting my next development venture. Making a product based on potential value and finding a way to make a "minimum viable product" is why the AAA industry is in the state it's in now. Large studios are based on, "We received X money from investors and they're expecting a Y% return, what IPs and/or genres can we leverage to hit that target," that's why we have FIFA/Formula 1/NBA/NFL/NHL/MLB/Other Sport Acronym 87, CoD 2024 (sequel number, not year), Generic Ubisoft Open World with [THEME] smeared on. They're not made because they wanted to make a great game and hope that it sells well so gamers have a great experience, with the money from those sales being a perk. It's how much money can they extract from a fanbase with as little spent as possible, a good game is just a fringe benefit that means the next game can be less viable because it'll end up selling well because of brand recognition.

I'm sure armored core is a great game but I'm not into high-speed third person mech games. It's really all about the simulated cockpit experience which was always a stable for MW games. I may get Vox now that I have a proper VR setup instead of a DK lol but this is so very disappointing to hear.

Good mech games in VR justify VR's existence IMHO. I will be trying Vox Machina bc of your review bc I was even into Battletech CCG and Mechwarrior before that videogames and all. But I bought Iron Rebellion and I like it a lot. It does feel more like you are in a real mech than Vox from just what I've seen in your review/comparison video. Short of having Steel Battalion, it seems that Iron Rebellion is much more aware of it being a spiritual offspring to the former and slowly but surely will be more embracing of that role with upcoming HOTAS support. Hopefully all the other goodies that could put it on that SB tier such as those ideas you suggested at the end of your video will make Iron Rebellion a legend of mech games in its own right, perhaps even on its own terms.

I think taking VTOL VRs level of cockpit interaction into a mech game would be the ultimate vr mech game. Needing to interact with the systems while piloting to lockup or target enemy mechs or modifying your weapon payleds via screens to achieve different effects would work so well in a pvp mech game

I think a reason that there’s few VR mech games is because motion controls are hard to use when it comes to complex vehicle movement, at least according to a lot of people. The reason I suspect this is because I’ve seen this stated a lot when Grid Legends VR port came out. As for Vox Machines maps and movement issues, I feel like that might be due to the nature of multiplayer games, which feel like they have they have a very loose feeling (for lack of a better way to put it). These aren’t meant to be excuses to be clear, just me giving my thoughts. One game that might scratch that mech piloting itch (even though I don’t know if the thing your driving in the game is a mech or not) is A Rouge Escape.

@@MrVRVoice OVRLORD is definitely a game to check out - it's leaning more towards Mechwarrior than IR or Vox, with separate torso and leg rotation ("tank controls"), crossed with VTOL VR style cockpit interactions. I suppose the answer is that Mech games are already a pretty niche thing, and then VR is a very small customer-base on top of that. Developing mech games seems relatively hard, while VR is constrained by performance/optimisation. And then you don't really gain much - the display and headtracking is the main thing, and then manual cockpit interactions. The thing is, they're just as easily abstracted through keypresses and mouse movement. I was much better at Vox on flat than in VR, mainly because the jumpjet controls were much less awkward and finnicky. In a similar vein, the MW5 mod VRWarrior makes it very difficult to see, identify and target specific components on enemy mechs beyond point-blank, without tanking your frames through upscaling. Granted, that game wasn't designed for VR.

From what I'm hearing in your video, it almost seems like they took the clunky physics from something like Robot Alchemic Drive (RAD), and fused it with the mobility of an Armored core game, and the end result was a game that was unsure of its identity. I would say Vox is more original compared to other mech games. Not that originality makes one better or worse than the other. Both are phenomenal games. But in Vox there is significantly more air based combat, and the ramming takedowns are not something I’ve seen before in a mech game. It is a very different skill set needed for Vox vs Mechwarrior. Air to Air/Land combat is a requirement and you need to become efficient at leading your shots when your mech and an enemy mech are catapulting in completely different directions. Iron Rebellion leans more towards the style of game in Hawken, but it does have its own unique feel. A big advantage Iron Rebellion has is its accessibility and shorter learning curve. Anyone that likes FPS games should find it very intuitive.

I couldnt agree more in everything you said about Vox, I really wanted to like it but I couldnt because I can tell what is fake from how it should be, and it saddens me that the best mech games are still not VR because VR its really suited for making the best mech games, and I dont mean just the style of piloting the mech controls like vox, but also the type like armored core, in armored core the mech is basically your body because of how the augmentation process worked (this is all lore but you get what I mean), a first person vr mech game where your body is the mech but the movement is fast paced heavy but powerful, like in armored core would also be awesome in my opinion should it be done well enough to properly transmit these sensations and without the fear of motion sickness, I constantly feel we are being dragged back because devs fear causing motion sickness and I hope for more adventurous games like boneworks that have no fear

I'm not sure which I'm disappointed in more. The chat for not making jokes about aiming with gays, or myself for thinking that's funny for a split second.

Vox would fix everything you're complaining about by simply changing the maps to show you your own scale, and up the damage when you hit the terrain. Simple stuff.

Hit reactions too.

When you make a hit on a mech with your weapons, take a closer look and you’ll see that the weapons are shearing off layers of armor plating. You’ll see some debris fall off and that reveals the blacker metal core underneath. Your weapons have to punch into the core to do any actual damage to the other mech. Use a railgun and try to ping the same arm over and again and you’ll see the plates fall off and eventually the arm will go after a few accurate shots. The visual effect you are claiming isn’t there actually IS there in a very accurate/ realistic way once you know what to look for. Cheers

@@MarvChester I don't think that's what he's talking about. He actually mentions the armor in the video. I think by hit reaction he's referring more to the mech actually being _moved_ by the shots, or maybe even falling over. In the Battletech tabletop game, if a mech takes a certain amount of damage in one round, the pilot has to make a check to keep their mech from being knocked over by all the cannon/missile shots. I can understand why falling over might not be done in a VR game, but I think having the mech actually rock or lurch to the side could absolutely be doable, feel immersive, and not immediately make people wanna hurl all over the cockpit.
