A PC Water Cooling Guide PETG VS Acrylic Hard line Tubing for Beginners. As a beginner to water cooling it is a very daunting task when choosing what tubing to use, should you go with petg tube or acrylic tubing, what are the differences between petg tubes and acrylic tube and what is better to use in a hard line water cooled pc. So i decided to make a water cooling guide of petg vs acrylic so consumers can make an educated investment into which ever water cooling tubing they wish to go with. Petg Verses Acrylic, which one would you choose?

The deburring tool works fine with either material, you just have to to it while applying minimal pressure and leaving the tool to do the rest. Not need to apply extreme force. Lastly, followed by a light sandpaper for best results.

Basically: PETG is better for beginners and for people who don't want to deal with the possibility of shattering. Acrylic is more advanced, takes more time, and is much clearer overall. If you want your build to be as sexy as possible, use acrylic. Just be careful when handling acrylic though because it can scratch easily. I recommend getting something plush to put the tubes on.

Do people always dip the heated tubes in water? Because flash cooling anything that has been heated up, to the point where it can be reshaped, only makes the item weaker. Much weaker. obviously both pipes were treated like this. But.. in defense of acrylic if it was heated and left to naturally cool it will be strong enough for any pc cooling system. Out of all the years people have used acrylic i have heard of only a handfull of cases where acrylic cracked in a pc. and in those cases the pc was actually dropped and broken as well. As for PETG it is stronger and easier to work with but also is not without flaws for example i hope people understand to not use coolant with glycol in PETG systems as the PETG will be degraded by the coolant and leak. TLDR Acrylic, if cut, heated and cooled properly, it is plenty strong enough to cool your pc as it has been for years. PETG has Strength and ease of use and allows the use of pipe cutters, but can be degraded and ruined by coolants with glycol in it.

One test you missed to demonstrate. What happens under constant high temperature wihin the tubes, a scenario that happens with systems under load. PETG tends to deform in such a condition which can cause troubles. Also it is untrue visually are the same, acrylic is definitely more clear than PETG.

Statistically people aren't snapping their acrylic tubes, so it seems to be an exaggerated issue regarding the snapping. Having said that, with my barrow quadrouple oring fittings (3 inside fitting + 1 on the tube), it sometimes takes a bit of force to push the PETG tube in, I can imagine doing that with acrylic and it just snapping. Acrylic is compatible with all liquids, but PETG isn't, but again statistically people aren't having issues with PETG, so it doesn't seem to be such a big problem. Acrylic seems harder to bend and too much or too little can damage the tube apparently. But with PETG I've never had bubbles form, and its easy to bend if you do it right. Acrylic is better in that it doesn't flex back slightly when its cooled unlike PETG. And acrylic wins in deburring, but that's pretty minor. I think I will stick with PETG for the same safety reasons. Jayztwocents prefers PETG, so its gotta be a good choice.

In short : acrylic is nicer ansd less prone to accumulate residues, as well as less prone to water vapour transmission (permeation). However, if you're a somewhat "brutal" or a not so agile craftsman, go with PETG.

I much prefer acrylic, it's clearer, more resistant to UV discolouration, scratch resistant, and leaves safer edges for your fitting's O-rings, and there are no compatibility issues with coolants, while PETG can discolor, and turn some coolants into discoloured gunk as they react with plastic. It takes longer to work with acrylic, but i think it's worth it. It's safe, as long as you don't take a hammer to your build ;) Cool video by the way.
@DesignsByIFR
@DesignsByIFR 7 жыл бұрын
+Ariana Khan thank you =) the discolouration hasnt been proven to be petg, infact a big youtuber tested acrylic petg and glass tubes and he continued to get the discolouration so there was something else in the system. One thing that will have a reaction over time would be using car coolant with PETG because car coolant contains glycol which is also what petg is partly made up of and this could spark a reaction, not something id love to test in a system but perhaps i could leave a piece of tube sitting in a glass of car coolant for piece of mind haha. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated =)
@arianakhan6665
@arianakhan6665 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, you're probably right, but Mayhem's XT-1 for example is based on ethylene glycol, which will react with PETG at around 20c. It probably won't destroy your rig, but your tubing will discolour. That said, never clean acrylic with Isopropanol either. The best advice is for folks to double check stuff before putting it into their rig. I'm still paranoid, but only use distilled water myself, weird I know. \_ (:/) _/

The kind of glass you should use is called borosilicate, it's the kind of glass beakers and flasks used in chemistry labs are made of. It's absolutely a more premium material than either acryllic or PETG, but to get 8t hot enough to bend you will need an actual open flame from a torch at minimum.

Could you tell me what size this tubing was? i read on ekwb that petg is prone to deformation over time with the heat which can lead to leaks. so even though akrylic is brittle and harder to work with, if you dont move your pc often or at all, it is certainly the superior choice if you're careful.

Nice vid. Although I think you used the pipe cutting tool incorrect, when you cut the acrylic pipe. I think you tightened the tool too much, when you started cutting the acrylic pipe. Where I grew up this tool is usually used by plumbers to cut copper pipe. With copper being a soft metal, you can't tighten the cutting wheel too tight, or else you'd squeeze the pipe. You start tightening the cutting wheel very lightly and when it has gone through it's first "layer", you can feel the tool going easier around the pipe. Then you you increase the tightness of the tool just a little more and cut through the next "layer". You repeat that until you're through the pipe. I think you'll have to take a similar approach with the more brittle acrylic pipe. It may take a little longer but gives a nice even edge which needs much less cleaning. I also have to admit that I never cut anything else than copper pipe with that tool, so in the end it's just speculation. 😁😁😁 But if you try my approach let me know how it worked. 😁😁😁

You aren't supposed to use that tool for acrylic. He was only using it to reiterate his point that acrylic is far more brittle than PETG. This video is very biased towards PETG and really only skims acrylic and focuses on displaying its negatives rather than showing the differences in approach that you need when using it or the positives it has that beat PETG such as longevity and ease of reworking.

You didn't address a very important aspect of petg vs acrylic, which is temperature softening and melting points. I just lost a $900 video card because my pump failed and the petg tubing to the CPU softened to the point that it allowed water to leak out. Petg only has a melting point of 81 to 91C, while the typical shutdown temperature of a CPU is 110C. The working temperature is listed at 50 to 60C, which is below that of a stressed CPU. If they pump is running, the water will only be a few degrees above ambient, so it's not a problem, but if the pump fails petg is the best material to use in a hot water environment. Keep that in mind.

Well i get what you are saying but no body in the world does tutorials based off of a senario with a dead pump in the loop.

i think you mean acrylic in your last sentence, i'll go acrylic for that particular reason, my computer is powered on 24/7 and want to avoid that problem if the pump fail and when i'm not at home, also this scenario may occur if you keep a computer for 10+ years like me ! Not all people change build every 2 or 3 years

So why does anyone do Acryllic?
@eekwibble
@eekwibble 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't cloud or stain as easily or as fast as PETG, it doesn't react with the chemicals found in a lot of coolants and cause deposit build-up, it's easier to reheat/rework if/when a bend doesn't come out as well as you want, it's more resistant to heat, both from a bending and finished product perspective so there's less chance of ruining a pipe as you're heating it or of a pipe getting too hot inside your system and warping and causing a leak. There are probably a few other points I've missed but I think you get the idea. This video focuses solely on the shock-force durability of PETG over acrylic and completely bypasses its other inherent positives such as ease-of-use and colour range. I came here looking for an unbiased take on the acrylic vs PETG question and, sad to say, this definitely ain't it.

Dude, you are supposed to rotate the cutting tool when cutting the pipes. Not just press it throught. Thus creating much nicer cuts on both materials.

Designs By IFR okay, sorry! My bad. Just looked like you really tried to force it through. But I have seen many other builders getting clean cuts with acrylic. I think you just have to handle it like glass; not tighten so much at once and rotate more before tightening again.

@@DesignsByIFR That's not how you're suppose to use that tubing/copper cutter! The correct way is that you tighten the handle 'til you have some pressure on the pipe, then spin the cutter around the pipe a couple of times, tighten more, and spin again,... and repeat until the pipe separates. Nice and easy.
