I have a 2010 Cayman S PDK. I bought it new and it has been my daily driver for 13 years. It is currently at 131,000 miles. It has been pretty reliable. In all that time I have had the following issues: 1. Oxygen sensor failure (fixed under warranty) 2. Belt tensioner came off when retaining bolt sheared off block (fixed under warranty, dealer had never seen this failure before) 3. CV joints 4. Upper front strut mounts 5. PDK mount/bushing 6. Rear engine mounts 7. Very slow leak from power steering rack 8. Headliner came down and had to be replaced Basically, after more than a decade in the Texas heat, many rubber items (mounts, CV, bushings) have needed to be replaced.

@@autonomousindividual7780 I bought a 981 boxster S in Jan, Low mileage, fully loaded with an extended prosche warranty. The engine mount(s) have already gone and the warranty will deal with it. Otherwise £2k a pair. This was almost certain to happen, a common fault with no recall issued, to be replaced with a defect new part. Great car though

Just a quick tip. I bought an 8 year old Boxster S and the water pump started to fail. My car had 11,000 miles on it so it definitely is a time component. When it starts to leak, it'll leak on the belt which makes you think you have a slipping belt because of the noise. The water pump can be purchased from the company that supplies Porsche. DO NOT BUY A PORSCHE WATER PUMP. I examined the used and new parts and they are exactly the same. Total WP replacement for me cost $600 parts and labor. Last thing. I bought a new thermostat to have installed with the water pump and pro mechanic says don't touch thermostat if it's working.

Considering you’re talking about a car that’s 15 years old potentiality those issues don’t seem horrible. Plus most people don’t keep their cars that long so I imagine all the expense to fix them will be with different owners so no biggie. Great video, my 987.1 has had all of these problems except the water pump. I also needed to replace the starter because it was having that wheezing issue. I fixed everything on my Porsche from the air oil separator to plugs and coils, shifter cables (upgraded to the Numeric cables, they are great) starter and climate control buttons myself in my garage. The car is very easy to work on and nothing was very expensive. (OK, maybe the fancy racing cables were a bit pricey) For a 16 year old car it is amazingly reliable, super well made and brilliantly engineered. Of course it also drives and handles like a perfectly balanced piece of German art. If people think these small issues make the car sound bad, you may have never owned an older car before, these problems are nothing :)

This guy got a lot of stuff right. What he got wrong was the fact that the base 2.7 model has far fewer issues than the S model. The 5 speed manual transmission is much more reliable and there’s far less chance of bore scoring. Oh and the 2.7 sings a very lovely song with its engine note… and of course if you daily this thing you get to rev it out a lot more often than you do with the bigger one.

I’m an ex Porsche technician, the Cayman in all versions is great fun to drive, handles great, has excellent brakes. Unfortunately the car is let down by numerous faults derived from cost cutting, there are a lot VW parts inside, the interior quality is very poor for such an initially expensive car, and the mechanical issues are again unjustified for the cost of the car. As an example, The original water pump has a plastic impeller which disintegrates, I used to fit aftermarket water pumps with a metal impeller, never had one fail. It is a fair comment that many of my customers complained about the overall reliability when compared with the purchase price. I don’t recall any of my customers changing the oil as Porsche recommended, all did at least an intermediate oil change, due to our hot climate here in Greece, I advised my customers to change the oil at 5000 miles, everyone of them did so, we had virtually no issues with bore scoring and again because of the hot climate, we checked the coolant reservoir at every oil change.

Had a 2006 Cayman S and became frustrated by the interior failings that Porsche refused to cover. In the interiors that are camel colored, the color was applied via a soft touch technique. Within 3 years the paint easily peeled off. The only fix was to remove all interior pieces and have them repainted. Porsche acknowledged the problem but refused to warranty. When I got the car I planned on putting about $2500 into it for transmission flush , brake fluid flush , serpentine belt , replaced AOS based off when I read and the miles on it , oil change plus the interior drivers door pull was not working correctly. Before I bought it I never could understand why people would pay what they do for a Porsche . Now I see . So much I went out and bought a Cayenne the year after and I’m hooked lol

I agree. A lot of misconceptions about this issue and some people making a lot of money off this supposed issues with IMS on the Cayman. It is however an issue with the 986 Boxsters and 997`s in some cases. The big possible issue with the 987 S Gen 1 is bore scoring, usually on Cylinder 6. I currently own a 2006 S model going on 3 years with 75k miles and have had zero issues to date.

@Terminus1962
@Terminus1962 Жыл бұрын
That's intelligent thinking and you will not have the bore scoring issues that the S models can have. IMS bearing is a paranoia that carries over from the 90s Porsches. I owned a 2007 Cayman Base and drove it for 3 years. It had a "repaired" headliner and the door handle issue he mentioned. When I got it, it had 64k, and I paid $18.5k. I used it as a daily driver. Air/Oil separator did go out, and changed the brake pads during my ownership. Less than 2k in maintenance costs. For a Porsche, this is normal, and even perhaps below average. I sold it for $17k with 86k, and now a vehicle in this condition would command north of $24k. It was a dream come true, and I still wish I had it. difference in power is negligible. The S models top speed is 174 mph vs Base model top out 162 mph. The Base model weighs a little less, so it may actually handle a bit better. I never felt underpowered, and it was a pure joy.

My 2006 manual (allmost a 150k MIles on the odometer) is in the shop right now - again... But I don't care! It's simply too much fun and worth every Penny! If you want to have real fun. If you want to drive a performance car that puts an everlasting smile on your face, you must not care about the costs of keeping it on the road and/or in roadworthy condition. It will cost you - dearly. But whenever you fire up that flat six and you take her out on a winding road, you'll know that it was worth it. I've had 60+ cars in the past. I've been owning/drivoing more than half a dozen Porsches in the past. The 987 Cayman S is a true keeper. It's expensive, but it's as much fun as a Ferrari 360 for a fraction of the cost.

The best way to evaluate the health of a AOS is by using a manometer to test crankcase vacuum level. Going by the puff of smoke or other method is not conclusive. For example, a puff of smoke could be a byproduct of cold start enrichment.

Thanks for the input! Although this is the best way most people are not technicians that have a manometer to test vacuum. I am speaking to people interested in a 987 or have one and notice a puff smoke giving them an idea of what I might be. But of course will need to have it diagnosed 👍🏼

I've seen a few people saying the M97 WILL fail but they either have no source for where they got this information, or it came from an engine rebuilder who has a vested interest in getting customers. Meanwhile I've seen listings of them with 150-300,000 miles, even with the 3.4L still on an original engine so I'm starting to think I should take it with a grain of salt? Seeing them start to go for close to double what I payed a year ago.. it's somewhat tempting to sell, except I only want a 987.2 S or 981GTS with full leather which is extremely out of budget.

As someone very new to Porsche, I'm looking to buy my second car ever, and the 987 caught my attention. Would it be a gigantic leap of faith as a university student to buy such a car? It would be my only car, and I would drive it 3-4 times a week. I have some alternatives, but this seems like the most fun and soulful option. Plus if someone asks me what car I drive and I just answer "Porsche", I'd feel kinda cool, not gonna lie xD

Great question.... So glad to hear you are interested in Porsche! I would be sure to make sure you get a PPI before purchasing the car to make sure it is sound and repairs will come up from time to time and can be costly. Getting a sound car from the beginning will certainly help. It certainly is a great option... just make sure to do regular maintenance, PPI and a car with good records and you should be good! I don't blame you... there is certainly a pride in saying you own a Porsche 👍🏼

You’re a bit confused, these cars don’t have spark plug tubes, and that’s a non issue for a 987, that’s for the 986. There is an updated ignition coils, so these need to be updated with the spark plugs. The RMS is a maintenance item, if done when the clutch is changed, it should last that long. The IMS bearing is a non issue, change the oil in a regular basis, and it last as long as the engine cylinders that will eventually develop bore score .. you can delay it, but you can never stop it. Never do a PPI at a dealer, it’s a waste of money, do it at an Indy, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is SCOPING the cylinders for bore score, bore score start low in the cylinder, you can’t see it from the spark plug hole, scoping need to be done from the sump The loose handle has nothing to do with the cable as you said, it’s the return spring in the handle that breaks or go loose and an easy fix. Lastly never buy a tiptronic .. it’s a very boring transmission

Please give me your impressions on the Tiptronic. I currently drive an '06 Corvette Z06 manual and while it is great on an open road, during any city driving or commutes, it's completely tiresome. I'm actually selling it and looking at a Boxster (986) with the Tip. (I know, big change, but I'm getting older and my wife wants to drive it as well. Plus a 505hp car is pretty much useless in the city where I live) Wondering how it drives. And I know, people with crucify you online for driving anything less manly than a manual. (Although I suspect most of them don't even own a car to be honest).
