And overclocking tip would be to unplug the fans from the GPU and try to plug them into your motherboard because the voltage that the fans are usage is included in the core voltage so by unplugging them you are making more voltage available to the GPU

i don't get why asus hates dual bioses? i'd imagine it being a very cheap feature to add.... and it also provides bonuses for non ocers, like being save from getting a corrupted bios or if there is an improved bios not for oc, just improved or a fix etc.... so u can flash it without worrying. i hope they fix this at their vega cards

this probably was some higher up who heard "protection against mods going wrong" and was like MODS???? WE DON"T WANT TO LOSE REVENUE BY PEOPLE MESSING AROUND AND RMAING IT!!!!!!!!1

@the idiot said i can't imagine them being this stupid to actually think that without that person informing themselves on the matter. i mean we are talking about the opposite here :D dual bios protects against rma or rather tried rmas, that still cost the company money, because they at least have to check what is going on if they don't solve the issue, because it was your fault.... btw i saw in a review of the 1080 ti strix, that asus put warranty void shit on one of the screws of the card, which first of doesn't really stand ground if someone would challenge it from what i heard and second fucks up users if they try to reinforce that. i mean holy shit those are the strix cards, the particular cards, that ek even makes waterblocks for, which are directed onto enthusiasts, yet they dare to put a warrant void if removed sticker on the screws. so well this decision i guess fits the way u explained possible decisions against dual bios, so something is fucked up at asus :( they also got rid of ps/2 ports on the new am4 top motherboard, again a shit decision....

Compared to reference, this board looks so much cleaner in its layout. I wonder what the other non-reference boards will look like. On a side note, I wonder how much things will change once pcie dies. Gen 4 is the last gen based on the current connector, and various companies have started on their own pcie successor. I'm hoping we'll get 3.3v, 5v, and 12v through the connector, possibly even 1.8v, which should clean up a lot of the vrm components; also hoping that the power contacts are beefy enough for the current and eliminate the 6 and 8 pin connectors.

How do the underlying traces carry such high current? I've seen high-current boards with ludicrously thick traces just for 80-100A, but this looks like a stock 2oz FR4/ENIG setup. Even with fat traces, surely the BGA pins can't carry that kind of current? A quick back-of-the-napkin calculation shows that even at 10oz-worth of traces (I'm assuming a thick multilayer board) you'd need a 30mm wide trace to carry 200A continuous and remain under 100C temperature rise. I'm at a loss as to how the BGA pads themselves cope with that kind of power delivery. And even then you're looking at a 20mV drop across a 2 inch trace, which seems concerning on such a tight power delivery tolerance.

I didn't understand even HALF of what you said, but it was an awesome video nonetheless (KZbin just dropped this in my lap. Man, those algorithms are getting scary good at predicting) Why would you solder more Resistances onto those "shunts" (@23:29 for example)? Granted it was looooong ago that I had to build basic circuitry, but wouldn't that mean that you basically take this 200W card and make it draw 300+ Watts? Wouldn't that be a burden on those MosFets?
@tanishqbhaiji1033 жыл бұрын
You cant increase resistance by adding resistors in parallel you can only decrease it. That is the power consumption reported to the software. And yes increasing the power limit/consumption to 300w would increase the load on the mosfets but it would also increase performance by a lot. AND THATS WHY WE OVERCLOCK.

Hey Buildzoid, relatively new subscriber here :-) and (of course) I have a question regarding my Asus Strix OC 1080 Ti that I have bought about a week ago: I have tried to get it to run stable on a 2038 Mhz core clock (voltage set @ 100%, power limit @ 120%, thermal limit unlocked, air cooling, fans @ 50 to 70%, temperatures not hitting more than 62°C) and I have to tell you... it doesn't run all that stable at all. 2025 Mhz is however quite stable on those settings. My question is: Should I consider that card as one of the... not so good ones and return it, or is my experience an average one on that particular card? Thank you in advance.

@MrLostGravity3 жыл бұрын
There's so much wrong with this comment, the difference between 2 graphics cards of the same generation scales roughly linearly by their core count assuming similar memory setup, 2200-2300 is a high OC that's pretty hard to achieve and i would not at all feel comfortable running the 1,2-1,3V necessary to sustain that. I'd suggest looking at the basics as far as overclocking goes instead of shooting for the stars right off the bat, buildzoid (this channel) has some great videos explaining the foundations and his OC adventures are a good way to gain a feeling for how far hardware can be pushed under different circumstances.

Could you state whether I would need to cool the silver or black units if I want to bring down the VRM temps? Or maybe both?
@Namtrooper812 жыл бұрын
Or do you believe it is absolutely unnecessary to cool the vrms at those temps?

I mean I know I am inherently taking a risk, but if I could bring down the temps by like 50 to 10 degrees by sticking copper shims or finned heatsinks on top of the VRM's or something I would sleep better at night as I guess I would prolong the lifespan of the VRM's....

Yes, that was what I was thinking but the mother board is a X58 with PCIe 1.1 so will that limit the GTX 1080 Ti? PCIe 1 is limited to a transfer rate of 2.5 GT/s, with a throughput of 4 GB/s. Sounds like the shunt mod might be easier here and should help with higher clocks if the card is not hitting TDP already. I still wonder if the extra power phases and the 8+8pins make difference as well for water cooling.

I saw once a video about PCI-E dont like to get more then 75W - could it be dangerous to make the PCI-E shunt mod?

If you are using only 1 PCIe card then they can handle up to 150w because it is limited by the 24 pin connector having only 2 12v lines with 18 gauge wiring and non solid pin connector, that is the headroom left

This, or the FE version?

I did too. The extra $80 wasn't worth 1-2FPS gain.

What makes some cards more prone to coil whine? Does this one have a high chance because my first one had it
