Nice vid - I had a problem with keys not registering when pressed, on a laptop I hadn’t used in a while - a real easy fix was to press and hold the key down , and gently twist the tip of a screwdriver in the cracks around the key’s edges - the friction was enough to clean the contacts, without disassembling the key - it’s a good first step to get problem keys working again!

If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. @@PC_Monkey wow, thanks for responding. I can't find this exact problem in forums. The only one that was similar that I found suggested the spring might be corroded. It feels normal, I guess, but it lower clips of the cap are loose. The thing is, even if I remove the hard key cap/cover, and just press the naked rubber spring cap, the behavior is the same. I have to press the bare spring cap hard too to get the key to register a press.The nerd in me would love to figure this out but I think this might be a list cause. Do you have any ideas? @@PC_Monkey thanks for getting back again so soon! I'm sorry if I wasn't clear: there's no issues pressing it. Both with and without the cap on, the rubber covered spring goes down normally. What is odd is that they character doesn't register/display unless I get a little aggressive with the pressure. It can work but only with elbow grease. I can't see anything obvious with the pressure, I think there's an issue with contact at the base inside the mechanism but I don't know enough to figure out what exactly, or if there's anything that can be done. With the cap on it feels just like the other buttons.
@hystrionic9 ай бұрын
One thing worth noting: this is an "e" key , and before cleaning the keyboard yesterday the "7" and "c" were also not very responsive. But cleaning those two mostly fixed the issues. The "e" is being stubborn. Is there some common circuit they share? The "d", however, is completely fine.

That depends on your keyboard. If the key is stuck, I would disassemble as seen here and inspect for damaged or a need for cleaning. After, I would try to reinstall the key. If its damaged or if it wont install back, I would try replacing the key

If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

Just more detail. Since it is the hardest part to remove. Your movements are very quick and the footage is not very focused. I'm not able to see the exact points your applying pressure to. I'm able to remove the keys on my laptop, but not the retainer clips properly without breaking them. A video exclusively on the retainer clip would be appreciated.

Is there anything wrong with your computer that you were trying to troubleshoot by running that test? If it says errors with your memory, I would remove one of the RAM sticks and run the test again until you find the one that has the issue. Then I would replace it.

There isn't really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

My W key has come loose WITH the clip still attached to it. I’ve been able to carefully remove the clip (so they’re two separate pieces) and follow the rest of the steps in this video. But then the W key falls off again after a little wiggling WITH the hinge attached again. My problem is that the hinge won’t stay connected to the actual laptop. Do you have a fix for this?

Hey, Jamin. In 2021, I experienced this problem with my dell computer, that is, certain keys (b, f, m, and n) weren't working on my keyboard. So, I took it to a computer repair shop, and they suggested I replace the entire keyboard, but instead, he sold me a separate, independent keyboard that plugs into my computer.
@PC_Monkey2 жыл бұрын
Yes, an external keyboard is a good idea when troubleshooting why a keyboard is not working. Did you ever manage to get your keys to work properly? If not, do the keys feel like they are physically fine or do they feel like they have something mechanically wrong with them?
@rhondae82222 жыл бұрын
@@PC_Monkey I don't know because the computer repair guy only told me that my keyboard needed to be replaced or I had to use an external one. Nevertheless, I paid for the external keyboard that he sold me inside the shop. It is still working today. However, had I watched your video prior to 2021, I probably would not have needed to take it to the repair shop. Might I add, your videos are very helpful in guiding people in repairing their computers themselves.
