The launch of AMD's Ryzen 7040 series of CPUs brought a dedicated AI acceleration chip, dubbed Ryzen AI, meant to accelerate certain tasks like those built into Microsoft's Studio Effects. But how does it compare to the Nvidia Broadcast versions of eye contact and background blur, and even what's built into Zoom itself? In this video Gordon looks not only at the quality but the impact to battery life when using these tools.

So glad you cover practical topics for everyday use! It's great seeing Cinebench scores and all, but knowing about the state of USB4 and the real-world applications of efficient, integrated AI accelerators for video calls is what makes me look forward to getting my Ryzen Framework laptop!

Gordy won't be able to use them because neither of them supports AI generated hair. Actually, NV can add hairwork to their 40 series and it will definitely help.

These are the best types of videos; please do many more of these. Instant subscribe + notify. I'm so tired that consumer laptops primarily get benched on Blender, Cinebench, and a H.264 5GB video loop for battery life. None of these are even close to today's workloads of 1) network, 2) light GPU, 3) web-based apps, etc. There ARE big differences, as you show, that I'd pay for! Not for a 15% higher Cinebench score, though, because, shocker, I don't render 3D settings on my bloody thin and light.

Biggest thing with Ryzen AI is probably those energy savings, no need to wake up that GPU. And I hope Microsofts will improve their model as well, the quality limitations are probably not in the hardware.

Ryzen AI does seem better. I'm hoping ryzen AI is bring used by third party for video editor effects as the CPU and GPU can focus on rendering and audio effects in resolve. Nvidia does have high power drain when you just power up gpuz.

I'm interested in the Windows 11 Studio Effects. Sad to report not all current laptops with Ryzen 7040 series (Phoenix) are Studio Effects enabled. Tested on my Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with Ryzen 5 7640hs, sad to report the feature is not available. Kudos to Razer for adopting it soonest.

I like the studio effects background blur from the ryzen AI better. Yes, the nvidia version had improved sharpness which was desirable, but if you pay attention to APM off to the side, the ryzen version kept him blurred and the nvidia version made him into a hand model. I want the focus on the user and everything else blurred, so I give the nod to AMD on that one.

Intels virtual camera is broken in the current driver. But openVINO should handle this easily on CPU or iGPU and likely on the upcoming VPU. As a researcher that is working towards benchmarking models, it's a completely different. Eventhough we consider human evaluation as gold standard, there is more and more discovery that shows current Benchmarks don't really agree with human graders (Evtikhiev et al, 2023). And more and more evaluations are proposed that just use larger language models as graders.

Intel's old "extreme quality" option was really great and ran well on an iGPU, but sadly the option doesn't exist anymore and yes it's currently broken...

Does the Microsoft Studio Effects also do microphone filtering? Would be cool to see specifically the battery performance of Ryzen AI vs RTX Voice vs Krisp, I assume RTX Voice is horrible, and Krisp vs Ryzen AI makes no difference, like with the background blur here. This seems to demonstrate that Ryzen AI is pretty damn near worthless for anything like this.

There's a feature called AMD Noise Suppression on the Radeon graphics drivers, you can use it with any Ryzen APU

Last time I checked, Krisp sounded like garbage... So lots of room for improvement. But yes it won't make that much difference for audio, as it's lighter and so requires much less compute.

I still am not a fan of the eye tracking tech, background blur is handy to get rid of distractions. For me the lowest power option wins with laptops, all the background blur options are kind of ok to get rid of distractions in the background.

They may be fun, meme-generating gimmicks, but not really true solutions, other than the fact that the typical Zoom user has a very low standard on acceptable camera quality. Companies are coming up with webcams that rival the quality of photography cameras, and can produce natural background blur. Implementing that same technology onto laptops is what I would see should be the next step. AI may be good at generating very realistic looking photos after a lot of user input, but they are far from where they need to be able to generate realistic videos in real time. You could have easily photoshopped an image of an open eye, and use an eye tracker to place that shopped image to get a similar looking result.
@AshtonCoolman

The Microsoft/AMD Eye Contact is so much more natural looking than Nvidia's. Their background blur sucks though, but Nvidia's did as well when they first released it. Well done AMD.

I really didn't like the Studio Effects blur, it made me nauseous. Though, I can't exactly explain why. Nvidia Broadcast looks great, though the telemetry sucks. Zoom's version looks the worst, and I would never use it. Nvidia eye tracking is great, but kinda creepy. AMD's version is kind of weak, and not really that effective. Ideally you'd want something in-between the two.
