@thepirateswirled9 ай бұрын
The thing is, vrr doesn't work the best 30 fps and below, so it doesn't matter that much, on the other hand it would prolly increase the price by a lot. The Steam Deck OLED already has most of your mentioned features, other than vrr. Yes it has 15 watts, but what's the sense of a handheld if time is only spent plugged in at home, because the battery won't last long.
@Madblaster69 ай бұрын
@@thepirateswirled You missed my point. I already own the listed handhelds. We just got info that the batter is going to be 53W hours and it has Thunderbolt 4 for more options for external GPUs. If it has VRR I will be buying it because most games run over 30 FPS on the ALLY already. We need more information about power consumption because as we've seen with the desktop CPUs the performance pre watt is measured differently.
@thepirateswirled9 ай бұрын
It probably won't last as long as the Steam Deck OLED in comparison, though. I'm not sure if you meant the OLED model, as you only mentioned the Steam Deck before. The OLED version already has a 50Wh battery, and its SoC got a shrink. I may have overlooked that your main use case is to use it at home, connected to an external GPU, which I understand. In my case, it serves a different purpose. I especially love it for its portability and visual quality simultaneously. You might also have missed that the MSI Claws' battery percentage already dropped by 4% in 11 minutes of non-gaming in this video - that doesn't look very promising. I still believe it's not worth it, having a 1080p screen on a handheld because it consumes more power, or having the SoC taking 25 watts or more. But it's okay if you have a different opinion; we all have our preferences. For me, the Steam Deck OLED is an all-around handheld that can do almost everything, with a very good screen and good at most aspects like battery life. Even though the display is 800p, it's sufficient for me. Maybe surprising for you, at home, I use an LG 4K OLED screen on my main gaming PC, but the Steam Deck OLED screen still looks great and pretty sharp to me which was actually unexpected because it looks sharper than my Switch LCD does, more than sufficient for me at least. @@Madblaster6

@@thepirateswirledlegitimately the only thing the sd has is battery life. And marginally. track pads are subjective, I have the ally and it works for me flawlessly navigating windows. That 800p resolution on an OLED is dumb imo, because both the ally at 1080p, and the msi will look better over all and okay? If I’m not gaming, and surfing the web, video watching etc, I’d much rather have a 1080p screen than 800p.. so saying having 1080p isn’t worth it, is kinda dumb. I’d rather have options. And not be forced to use 800p for everything. Yes the die got smaller, from 7nm to 6nm, which doesn’t really do much either.. and let’s not forget you can’t even play your entire steam library (unless you’re lucky.) and, at this point and time you can’t play any game with anti-cheat because 99% of them don’t support Linux.. is windows finicky? Yeah. But I don’t see how anyone would want to be so limited to what they can do on a hand held. And, not want more power when needed, because let’s face it, all the devices after the sd, bench mark better. And perform better, other than like super low wattage. That chip is getting old fast imo.
@thepirateswirled9 ай бұрын
They all have their advantages and disadvantages, Asus Ally users will spent more time plugged in, with more power though, Steam Deck users, on the other hand, will have to make more compromises in visual quality settings and resolution but being more mobile. Even though, to me, the OLED screen still looks better than a 1080p IPS panel, I have seen the other devices in person as well, like the Asus Ally and the Lenovo. And also let's not forget it, they are all handhelds, using 800p is not really a disadvantage for the Steam Deck, even if you considered to set up 800p on your 1080p screen, it will still consume more power than if it was a real 800p panel. It is also not correct to say that the shrink didn't do a lot, The update and combination of the bigger battery from 40 Wh to 50 Wh on the OLED model and the shrink of the SoC doubled the battery life in some certain circumstances, from 25% up to 50%, which is a lot. If you look it up, you will find reviews showing how much better the Steam Deck OLED performs against the competition in terms of battery life, while keeping a respectful performance. Many reviewers also said that they like the OLED panel, even if it's 800p. About the Windows thingy, you can also still install Windows on the Steam Deck as a second boot alternatively, and don't forget the well optimized SteamOS either, While Windows doesn't have any optimizations for handhelds at all, taking alot of power by background applications and big updates. in most regards, I think the Steam Deck, compared to other handhelds, is one of the least limited devices out there right now and not limited at all. The track pads are like the Mousepad on a Laptop with additional functions, they also vibrate when you do actions and they can turn into a D Pad, you feel the movement, why forego the D-pads if they are useful? They will be useful in first person shooters, or stuff where you will need more precision, or situations where we just need them.. Furthermore, the other devices you were referring to only benchmark better if they are allowed to use more power. The SD OLED model, in some cases, performs 1-3 FPS better than the Ally and the Lenovo Go at 15 watts because it has a more efficient SoC at its wattage. The Ally and the Lenovo Go need more watts to unlock their full potential but then they will be faster, which comes at the cost of their battery life. Without wanting to speak ill of any of the other devices, they all have their advantages and disadvantages, as I said. @@Godlyblurrs

@@kysierkevinIt has actual battery life, what's the point of running 120 fps at 1080p if the screen is 7" and the battery life is measured in minutes rather than hours? I use my handhelds as handhelds, and I expect actual portability. If I wanted high performance at the expense of being plugged in, I'd just use my desktop. None of these high end handhelds come even remotely close to PC performance of any desktop far below their price. They split the difference in the worst way possible, you're better off having separate systems for separate purposes.

What I heard and from the specs of ROG Ally is that it has AI noise cancelling, Hi res or def besides certifications, built in mic and I didn't see those specs on the MSI claw. But if the one shown is just a prototype then its still in development until full retail release. The touch screen on the MSI claw is a plus like a track pad which means MMORPG games like Final Fantasy XIV online playable. I wonder how it'll work on dock mode connected to a tv and multiple BT controllers. If the case is modular does that mean we could add more back triggers if another company made extra molds? I guess we'll have to wait and see how it compares to the emulation and pc capabilities when its on retail.

I might get a second handheld in 1-2 years. There will be more handhelds coming in 2024 that is not revealed yet. There were 4 new PC handhelds revealed in January 2024 already.

@@BlobBlobkins It's AMD's own fault for lagging behind Intel on CPU market. Both of these companies started in 1960's. AMD had enough time to compete with Intel decades ago. ATI had monopoly in the GPU market in early 2000's and then they slowed down for years and let NVIDIA take over the market. ATI shot themselves in the foot by being arrogant. They thought they would keep the monopoly without doing any effort to keep the monopoly.

There have been intel handhelds in the past, they failed miserably on the graphics driver side! The experience was worse than any other handheld literally, even compared to the deck where some games do not work out of the box, but valve is honest about it and guarantees a flawless experience only for certified games, that literally 90% of the other games work as well, just is a nice bonus and you can install windows as alternative. With Intel gamer works has weird glitches, other games outright crash and refuse to work and that under windows, so no easy exit for the game you want to play and does not work! Sure Intel is getting better with the drivers now they are going full in, but they are still not there! Getting good drivers is not an easy task given the thousands of hacks games have applied over the decades, nvidia and amd are there where they are because they have been in full time since day zero, Intel is playing catch up in this area because they never saw 3d as vital to their business until recently, so they never cared about the 3d part except for the basics in their gpus until 2 years ago!

Nice Device, but the problem is the well-known human theme, higher faster further. The new devices are not trying to outdo each other in efficiency, but in hardware power, and that's exactly what doesn't make sense in a handheld in 2024, handhelds are intended for mobility, so battery life is most important, not that you can drive sub 2K on the tiny display.

@@ericwindsor339 Yes, some people want higher performance. What exclusive features really set the 3 Windows handhelds apart, though? It will be interesting to see what kind of ideas the companies try to distinguish their handhelds from the others. A simple approach of "more powerful than Steam Deck, with a bigger screen and Windows" won't be good enough down the road when the competition heats up. For me for gaming handhelds it's linux or not worth my time. Besides that 4 back buttons is a lot nicer than 2 as it allows you to fully map the face buttons there. As well as having the two trackpads is nice. It really just offers you a lot more options. So for me steam deck oled is by far the best option.

I don't even care about handhelds and still find this entertaining. As much as it's interesting to see how much power can be packed into a system when space and thermals aren't a constraint it's also interesting to see what can be achieved in tight restraints like handhelds and ultrathin laptops. Looking forward to the review and teardown.
