Motorcycle engines come in all shapes and sizes - right from tiny 50cc ones to big burly 2500cc ones that can give some car engines performance anxiety. And size does matter, especially when you consider the chosen application for the engine. So for motorcycles that need to go super fast, like sportbikes, will have about 1000-1300cc engine in an inline-4 or V4, maybe even a v-twin configuration. For a motorcycle aimed at an absolute beginner, the motorcycle needs to be light and easy, and thus, could have a small single or a parallel twin. And talking about the engine configurations, there are, probably, as many of those as Diwali mithais in your favourite sweet shop. And all of that is decided on what the motorcycle that engine goes in, is expected to do. And gone are the days when some configurations lacked power, refinement, and the oomph as others. So before you disregard a motorcycle just because of the type of engine it has, go check it out, ride it. And yes, we understand that some of you may prefer a big throbbing engine between your legs, but some of the best motorcycles today have engines that break conventional ideologies. In this episode of PD Simplified, Shumi breaks down the types of engines, and why engineers choose a certain type over others for a motorcycle.

Being a Mechanical Engineer it feels like I am reading my Automobile Engineering notes again. Most complex part is engine balancing and deciding the firing order. If you missed the engine balancing then vibration will rip your bike apart.

Engine Balancing and its sub topic Firing order belongs to the subject called Theory of Machines or Dynamics of Machine. You learn everything in a chapter called "balancing". Automobile Engineering doesn't contain such an important Chapter.
@blackbird8500
@blackbird8500 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeweldeka4471 You are talking about element design that is obviously part of machine design. Go and open book you will get theoretical information about that in Automobile Engineering. Bro just analyse yourself once again. For fuel - fluid dynamic, Engine parts - vibration chapter, element design Engine cooling - heat transfer chapter Don't be a teacher unless and until you're damn sure about your statement. And understand others too.

@@jeweldeka4471 And for your kind information everything is interrelated. I was just telling most difficult part of engine design is vibration and firing order. Theory part is in another subject and design part is in respective subject.

I completely agree that you gotta ride the bike to know if its meant for you. For a long time I fantasised about the RE Continental GT and that was the bike that was gonna get. I had never ridden one.. but I knew I wanted an aggressive stance. Then I rode one, and don’t get me wrong, its a beautiful machine, but I just din feel the connection. I then went on and tried the Apache RR 310.. and damn.. it fit like a glove. I fantasised about the RE but as a rider I wanted a completely different bike. I got the RR.. it brings a smile on my face every time I take it out!

There’s no such thing. An engine designer can do any version of this they want TBH. Generally, more cylinders = more opportunity to make torque/power. That’s about it.

I'm so glad you explained this. I'm so sick of our indian keyboard warriors Blindly claiming that more cylinders means better regardless of the character,power & torque curve, chassis etc. Just take the example of ktm duke 790 which was priced very closely to z900 & our internet experts were making fun of it for not having a i4 engine and saying its better to buy a z900 than 790. When infact the z900 has no character whatsoever & feels boring compared to the lightweight full of character 790

2:31 : Correction : Parallel twins are commonly 180' fired( Ninja 300, 650& Yamaha R3 ) and they don't at all sound like V twins Whereas, the triumph twins, duke 790 and the Royal Enfield 650's have the 270' , thus sounding like V twins. The 360' parallel twin(as you mentioned first) is found in the Benelli 300 which actually sounds like an Inline 4.

Shumi, I think now you should have to go further and discuss "Turbo" in a Motorcycle, coz this was the exact "Firing Order" that killed the first Turbo in a CX500( and of course due to its"Twin" layout). Then there was Z1R -TC and that whole 750 with XJ650Turbo Range. The People who bought XJ650 even reported with Turbo-Lags and frequent Maintenance. Therefore it rises all our wishes to examine this topic further better.(besides death on them🤕)
