+Gimps Unlimited - I totally agree about the overuse of "hero", which just detracts from its true meaning. God bless these Marines, human and canine ! My Dad was a Marine in WWII, serving on Saipan and Okinawa, and a member of the first occupational forces of Japan, so I have a special love in my heart for them. As he would say, "Semper Fi !"

Lucca's story broke my heart and healed it at the same time. I am so thankful that his handler at the time of the casualty was there for Lucca ALL the time right until the end. I am even more thankful that Lucca was able to retire with her trainer. What a wonderful ending to a tragic story. I am so thankful that these beautiful war-dogs are treated like fellow marines with the same respect and honour they deserve

This dog does the dirty work that the soldiers don't want to do. That's why this dog has this job. I don't like the concept but I love the respect that these soldiers have for there fellow comrades. This dog deserves all the respect it can get.

Why can't you guys see this dog is happy, working (a working breed), loved, enormously cared for, and honored. Yes, she was badly injured, but look at the incredible response of the human(s) who were responsible for her. Thanks for posting this, whoever posted it. I'm still wiping my eyes and blowing my nose. Bless Lucca and all the other canine "soldiers", and the individuals who handle them so beautifully.

God, I absolutely love how they went all out to give her a well deserved hero send off. That was amazing to see. Just goes to show how much these animals are valued for their service. I'm so glad our government recognizes and honors their achievements, just like they do for anyone else who has served our country or works in a duty-bound role.

Thank God the military has wised up and now do not put MWDs down just because they get injured or too old. When I was an active duty MWD handler they put my dog down just because he turned 14. That was the rule then. I almost got court martialed over it.

LOL, okay, that makes more sense. I don't know why. Apparently, under this dog, not a single marine was ever injured, shot, bombed or killed while she was on watch. That's incredible. I think she deserves an even higher award than she was given. medal of honor or some other human honor seems rather fitting. But I'm sure they probably have a good reason for not allowing it, and I know I'm biased because I love GSDs, so my opinion carries zero weight.
