Tim, I'm interested in your PE content - it recapitulates Ted Naiman really well. I'm quite impressed with your presentation style. Recently, I gave a zoom on Convergent Evolution of Intelligence in Octopus and Humans, and it was mediocre at best. At least nobody left, because the topic was interesting to the audience. But i must tell you that I'm gonna unabashedly steal your presentation style for my next talk!!!

Thank you for this video with the useful time stamps. I am so new at this that I am just trying to figure out how to do it! Yesterday, I thought that I was eating all of this protein; I even ate a can of sardines and a batch of bariatric jello (15 grams protein)! I did not make it to 100 total daily grams. What? Today, I am eating beef, salmon and more keto jello, and it looks like I will get 127 grams of protein! This makes me very happy, because most protein powders are isolates and give me migraines. It takes time to crunch the numbers. I appreciate that you are doing some of this for us.

@@Nellie7777777 Seems like you're tracking/measuring your blood sugar. If it was me, I would determine what my blood sugar target value is, and adjust my protein to fat ratio to reach that value. There are other variables that could affect your results, but reaching an average value over time is realistic.

I've just started on this "diet" a few days ago. Been doing keto for a couple of years after losing my initial weight doing Noom. Found that with keto I can put some weight on and needed to do some fasting intervals of all sorts to keep weight at bay (mostly 16:8, 18:6 and an occasional 24-48 hr fast). On the P:E scheme, I've started losing weight right away. Still early days yet but here's one thing about eating this way: it's a little hard for me to eat that many grams of protein. If I want to weight 150lbs, 150gr of protein a day really fills your stomach. One thing I've had to realize that in order to get this much protein in a day, I may have to start eating breakfast again and snacking on a high-protein bar or something like that. I guess thats a good problem to have. Here's a good thing to have: one of those small tubs of 0-5% Fage greek yogurts with a scoop of chocolate protein powder mixed in (right now I have some Orgain Keto collagen which has 10gr protein). That gets me 28gr of protein in a yummy chocolate "dessert".

Sounds great as a general guide (more protein, less empty carbs) but weighing every single thing I eat and looking it up on a food calculator would not be sustainable - for me - for any longer than a day or two. Plus I cook for two, which would make the weighing, calculating and limited food choices even move complicated and difficult. Socially, we dine out frequently as well. I wish everybody luck but this is not for me.

So basically this is a Keto diet, but cut down on Dairy, and do not eat to much fat? I think this is where I have been going wrong. I need to lose at least 30 Ibs I have been doing keto for nearly 3 years, but I think that I have been eating to much fat, and have stalled and gained some weight. I do not cook keto puddings or cakes, pizza's etc, and I do not eat to much dairy foods. A little cream in my coffee once a day, and a couple of times a week, 1 baby bell portion of cheese. I do not eat breakfast, some times skip lunch. Every evening I just eat meat, salmon and veg. I will have half a carrot on my plate, but the rest is mainly broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts. I very rarely snack. Other than perhaps to much fat, maybe portion size not sure. I cannot see where I am going wrong. Any ideas Tip? I am prediabetic
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Derry! The easiest way to explain the PE diet is to really focus on and prioritize protein, reduce carbs (like keto), fill the rest in with fat, and have a decent amount of vegetables. I would also limit any type of vegetable oil/all processed food which it sounds like you already do. You can always try to have a slightly higher than 1:1 ratio (more protein than energy). If you have even less carbs or reduce fat a little more it could potentially be helpful. If you haven't tried the PE diet, I would highly recommend it. I hope it help!

Thank you for all the great information! I appreciate the visuals and detailed examples. Very helpful! I do have a question: if you have 30 grams of protein and 30 grams of fat in each of your meals will that be in accordance with this diet? Is that the case if you are eating carbohydrates with your meal as well? Thank you! I would love it if you would consider doing sample meals for women as I'm sure the portions will be smaller.
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
If you have 30g of protein and 30g of fat, then your right at a 1:1 ratio which is great! Adding carbs to that meal would lower that ratio which would not be ideal, though you don't have to be 100% perfect all the time. Also, if you have 30g of protein and 30g of carbs then that's still a 1:1 ratio, but this would be a bit abnormal since most animal proteins are typically paired with fat and not carbs. I'm not sure if that answered your question, but hopefully, it helped a little. Let me know if you have any other questions! And I would be happy to do a video with sample meals for women with smaller portion sizes!
@Delgado-ot4lq
@Delgado-ot4lq 3 жыл бұрын
@@TimBurmaster Yes, that did answer my question and yes, I meant 30g of fat or carbs as I know having both fat and carbs wouldn't be ideal. However, I was wondering if we have lean protein such as chicken or tilapia that doesn't have 20 or 30g of fat to match the protein if in that case we would just add the fat in the form of oils in order to make it a 1:1 ratio. I personally dont eat red meats often but do eat chicken, eggs and turkey, hence, the confusion. And I would truly appreciate a video with female sample meals with 3 meals a day. I just found your channel and really like your style and detailed explanations. Thank you 🙏

While I realize the sample P:E Diet meals are for illustrative purposes only, I feel it's worth mentioning that this hypothetical calorie intake is a few hundred calories below what online Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) calculators show to be my minimum daily needs...with zero exercise. Thus, I would urge folks to not be so rigid that they ignore any internal signals that they need to eat more or less food. A 6' 2" man weighing 265 pounds will, obviously, have different caloric requirements than a 5' 8" woman weighing 165 pounds. The person's activity level, again, is another consideration. Unfortunately, I can't use exercise as a lever to help with weight loss, so food is my only option. From what I've read, it's not a good idea (and, it's also likely to be unsustainable) to eat below one's basic BMR needs for long. There are ripple effects that impact our immunity, fertility, metabolism, and other areas.

Snack: 2 medjool dates, tbls pumpkin seeds, 50g nuts. 2nd meal: 1 roasted sweet potatoes, 100g of salmon steak, 50g quinoa, veggies. 3rd meal: whole grain pasta made from red lentils, olives,mackerel, veggies. 4th meal: 50g porrage oats, tbls of almond butter, tbls chia seeds, 100g frozen berries. Evening meal: whatever the wife makes . I'm 54, 12st, 5ft 11" and lose weight very easily. I want to consume more calories to gain weight but not sure how healthy that would be as I would need to consume more carbs. Hey Linda Lambright! Keto and the PE Diet are very similar. The difference is that the PE Diet suggests eating more protein than keto would - ~35% protein (PE Diet) vs ~25% protein (keto). You are correct! Protein in grams is meant to be higher than both fat and carbs in grams. It's different with calories though since there are more calories in fat (9kcal per gram) compared to protein and carbs (4kcal per gram). So if you're looking at it from a caloric perspective though, around 30-35% of you calories would be coming from protein and the rest from fat and carbs.

Regarding carbs from veggies, it's best to use net carbs - (total grams of carbs - total grams of fiber = net carbs). Yes. Fat soluble vitamins, minerals, omega fat ratios, etc. Remember for the PE diet the goal is a ratio greater than 1. Anything over 1 and you will be a healthy weight with good muscle mass if you train. Ground beef’s ratio is over 1.

Chicken breast ratio being as high as it is simply means it’s a food that can make it easier to lose weight (assuming the chicken wasn’t fed complete sh!t, which would warp the omega fat ratios. Most chicken is, actually, and has high linoleic acid content)

If I want to weight 75 kilos, I should eat 165g protein and 165 combines of fat and carbs. if 40g carbs (which I never get up to), then that leaves approx 120g of fat. That just seems a huge amount of fat to me. Ive actually lately been trying to reduce my already not too high fat intake to try to lose weight again. Do I have to consume all those carbs and that big amount of fat. Can I just eat the protein and add in some fat and some carbs, but not as many as 165 combined ?. Wouldn't too much protein get converted over to glucose in your body causing the same effect as too much natural carbs?
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hey James! Gluconeogenesis will happen but if you're eating very low carb it shouldn't be a bad thing. Here's a hypothetical situation - If we're low carb, didn't have gluconeogenesis, and we're eating protein, which can cause insulin to elevate, that insulin will do its job and start shuttling glucose to our cells which could actually be bad because it could reduce our blood glucose to very low levels and we could pass out. Gluconeogenesis helps prevent that from happening and keeps our blood sugar within a normal range, allowing us to stay awake. So it's okay/ideal for our liver to make glucose if we're low carb. If we're going high carb and also eating a lot of protein though, we're going to see a big increase in insulin from the carbs and protein (gluconeogenesis) which would contribute to more energy and fat storage. I hope that helps! If you want to learn more about why we shouldn't be afraid of gluconeogenesis I highly recommend watching some Ben Bikman videos. He's seriously really good. Thanks for checking out the video too!

Great Video Tim. A Question: You(or Ted) say, the goal weight in lbs is the right amount of protein. But how is the Europe calculation? Here is 1kg eactly 2 Pounds. If i calculate this way, reduces the the amount of protein. USA: 80kg=176 lbs=176g of protein - EU: 80kg=160 Pfund=160g of protein! Thats a difference of 16g. How i handle that?
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
I would start by testing with the 176g/ day. Listen to your body and if you need to make some adjustments or decrease to 160g/day then give that a shot. Keep in mind that I occasionally do 24 hour fasts. There's no way I can eat between 150-200 grams of protein for my one meal in those days. Variability can be good!

This is wonderful for me. What would the amounts be for a man of 175lbs? Same thing? But how much more?
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robyne! It would be fairly similar. Protein would be about 175g/day. Keeping carbs low to less than 50/day would be ideal and then fill the rest in with fat. Protein is typically coupled with fat so these numbers are very doable. Thanks for checking out the video!

Hi Reeney! To convert kg to lbs, multiply kg by 2.2. So for you, it would be 75kg x 2.2 = 165 lbs. Let me know if you have any other questions! Happy to help!

@@reeneycruse7097 165g of protein and 165g of combined fat/carbs is what you need to eat if you want to stay at 165lbs. But if you want to lose weight, then you need to eat for your "target" weight (lbs) in equal grams of protein and carbs/fat. Example: Target weight = 55 kg/121 lbs, so you would eat 121 grams of protein and 121 grams of combined fat/carb (preferably 50 max net grams of carbs and 70 grams of fat) according to Tim. I'm experiencing the joys of menopause too and have slowly seen my weight increase. Time to get proactive and show menopause who's BOSS! 😜

Is the benefit of eating this way soley for satiety and making it easy to eat at a deficit and lose and maintain a healthy bodyweight for life? Or is there also other benefits that come from this diet as well? Hormones....sleep...etc
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Here are a few benefits that make the PE Diet worth considering: - Improved insulin sensitivity if you're doing low carb as well - Satiety if you're doing low carb while keeping veggie consumption high - Easy to maintain muscle mass due to high protein consumption - High nutrient density per calorie if you're doing low carb My personal experience: - Though on paper I'm not eating a ton of calories, it feels like I'm eating a ridiculous amount of food - Improved body composition without changing exercise habits - Very very little brain fog after consuming meals - Sleep is great unless I eat too much too close to bedtime - I'll be getting some lab work done to check insulin, cortisol, vitamin d3, thyroid, crp. I'll be documenting it and will show my plan of action with each test

Hi. I am 42 diabetic type 2. I need to loose around 50 pounds. My goal weight is around 140-150LBs. I have rather serious metabolic damage where I am hardly able to tolerate carbs at all. So considering my goal weight is 140, I have to consume 140 gms of protein. I want to keep my carbs at bare minimum say 10 gms net (from veggies only). So how much fats should I consume considering I need to loose 50 odd lbs? As per the above numbers my calories will be super low? I have recently started working out since couple of months and have put on some leab mass. But I havent seem to loose any inches or weight and due to workout I am ravonously hungry!!. My weight is hovering back and forth a bit but just that So how should I proceed with such low calories and also keep in check my hunger!

Also what king od veggie would suite me. I was trying chicken (250 gms) and brocolli (300 gms). But that much brocolli seems to raise my sugar levels as 300 gms brocolli has 5 gm sugar and 19 gm odd carbs.

@@arvind87654 Thanks for checking out my video! Are you using a continuous glucose monitor or are you doing a blood glucose measurement shortly after eating? And are you mostly eating chicken and broccoli or are you having other types of meat?
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Arvin, if you're looking to only have 10g of net carbs and you're looking to weigh ~140-150 lbs, you can have ~130-140g of fat. However, oftentimes it can be a good idea to set your short term goal to be a little higher. For example you can start with a short term goal of 170lbs. You'll get to eat more protein/fat and hopefully not feel so hungry. And once you get to that 170lb goal then you can set another short term goal. 7-12 ounces of dark leafy greens per day is something I always try to aim for. Definitely helps with satiety. Hopefully this was a little helpful. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

@@TimBurmaster Thanks for your response. I mostly eat chicken. I can source goat meat. I am from India so beef is out of question. I dont eat seafood as well., so that gives me a limited choice. Also, we dont have the kinda greens you get there in US or Canada. Plus Summer is approaching here that gives me very limited choice of veggies. I also thought of making smaller goals, so I guess I will start there. I currently weigh 193.2. So I will now be targetting Protein to 180 gms. carbs to 20 gms and rest 110 gms of fat! Calorie wise it comes to approx 1820. I am not very good with these macro calculations. Let me know your thought on the above. Thank you so much again for your response and guidance.

Hi, as a quick background I've done paleo, then keto "wrong", then keto "right" with the higher fat, then carnivore, but I'm sure you know where this is going. So when I started hearing about this it reminded me of when I was doing keto "wrong" because I was never getting close to my fat macros and was always over on protein and I was losing weight then. So, you would think it would be easy for me to get back to this but somehow feel stuck about the best way to track my food and also I'm thinking that I'm going to have trouble now going lower fat again, I mean, I have fallen hard for bacon. As I plan out my meals I'm looking for a total P:E ratio over 1 rather than each food? And then again, it is more important for the totals for the day to be in optimal P:E ration than the individual foods/meals? Thanks for any info, I'm doing more research along the way.
@TimBurmaster
@TimBurmaster 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Granny Squares & Wagon Wheels! Thanks for checking out my video and for commenting! Okay, so it sounds like at some point when you we're eating more protein, things were working for you, which is incredible. I too have a love for bacon though, but I do my best to eat it sparingly. My reason is this is that it's higher in linoleic acid (compared to beef/fish), which is a very problematic fatty acid that's found in vegetable oils. I genuinely believe it can be very beneficial from a weight loss perspective if we can significantly reduce vegetable oils/linoleic acid consumption. When it comes to tracking food, I personally don't do it. And when I made the switch to the P:E diet from more a keto type diet the only thing I did was prioritize my protein consumption. Some of the best animal protein sources are really close to being 1:1 already which is very convenient. So I just ate more protein, kept my veg still relatively high (7-12 oz/day) and I saw great results. If you want to track your food, when looking at each meal, a total P:E ratio of 1 (1 to 1 protein and energy) is ideal. It doesn't have to be each individual food, but the combination of everything. When looking at the day, it would be best to try to have each meal be as close to the 1:1 ratio as possible. 2-3 meals with a roughly 1:1 ratio each is going to be ideal! Here's a quick example - Breakfast 1:1, Lunch 1:1, Dinner 1:1 is better than Breakfast 1:2, Lunch 1:1, Dinner 2:1 Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
