Love your videos! Thank you! I was a Health & PE and Swimming Teacher for almost 34 years. I injured my back rushing to put a heavy piece of equipment away and run to a Health class. That injury finally forced me to retire. I taught 1-4, then 1-3, then K-2, then 3-4 and finally K-4. I taught PE for K-4 and Health and Swimming for 3-4. I used Respect yourself, others teacher and school. Then when I only taught K-2, I replaced the respect to take care of. My consequences were very similar. I gave a warning, then thinking chair with a thinking sheet and then parent phone call. I seldom needed to send a student to the office. One thing that really helped me with class control was peanut butter, marshmallows and pretzels. If a student was talking during instruction, I just had to say marshmallow. They would pretend they had marshmallow in their mouth and can not talk. If they were touching someone or something, I would say peanut butter. They would pretend they had peanut butter on their hands and their hands get stuck together. Last if the students were moving around while sitting for instruction, I would say pretzels. Criss cross apple sauce and they would cross their legs.

I LOVE how you've covered all of this in 6 minutes. The amount of time I bet you save and how this sets the tone in the later years. Keep doing the amazing work, I've learned so much from you as a soon to be newly qualified teacher

Do you have any other consequences that you implement, or sitting out is there only consequence/paper being signed?
@ThePESpecialist2 жыл бұрын
Normally that's it, but I follow our School Handbook for anything that's a severe infraction like fighting or cursing. Having the 3 strikes works for most of my classes, if needed I call for Admin to give some assistance

Do you use a whistle? if not when in a larger setting outdoors how do you gather their attention? such as you have taught them the rules in the gym but what do you do outdoors where its harder to hear?
@ThePESpecialist5 ай бұрын
I don't use a whistle, but if I was outside I might use one - I don't go outside much bc we don't have any good space

For your 3 strike system, how do you determine when to give a strike vs giving a reminder? Ex: Someone is talking when the teacher is talking, would that always be a strike one? Or would you sometimes give a visual signal to the students to refocus their attention back to the speaker? (Like pointing to your ear or using your school quiet signal). I'm trying to figure out a consistent way to implement this. Thank you.
@ThePESpecialist Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the class and student. If I have a class that struggles with behavior then I have to be way more structured, consistent and usually don't give any warnings without handing out strikes. Some of my classes are able to have more freedom without getting out of hand and with those I will give a few warnings before I hand out strikes

Do you have info about your elementary PE program that you send home with the students to their parents during the first week of school?
@ThePESpecialist2 жыл бұрын
We don't send home a syllabus or anything like that, I just give updates as needed through our school newsletter - like reminders to teach your kids to tie their shoes ( www.thepespecialist.com/teaching-kids-how-to-tie-their-shoes-virtual-pe-assignment/

It's not a bluetooth - just a wireless mic, it's a Shure brand and it's linked up on our recommended amazon resources page if you want the exact model: www.thepespecialist.com/amazon/

Was the "penalty box" idea one i stole from you? I am looking for it on your page where you shared it so I can show others but havent found it yet. I use the penalty box and it has been a game changer! Students displaying sportsmanship by taking themselves to the penalty box makes my heart happy.

I talk about it in my PhysEd Hacks video, but I originally got the idea from JD Hughes at a conference presentation about 10 years ago - not. sure if he has it in a book or if he just mentioned it

For athletic kids PE Class is great. For some kids it is HECK. When I was in PE class I had to run a mile. After a quarter of a mile I collapsed. Another time we were running laps in the gym. I wasn't running fast enough so the kid behind me gave me a shove into the hardwood floor and I wound up in the hospital. Kids should be able to opt out of PE Class.
