@ThePESpecialist3 жыл бұрын
Nice man! Marketing is a great skill set and can he really useful in teaching too - we all market ourselves and our classes every day in one way or another. I would either switch majors and graduate in 5 years if you're sure about it - or finish up and get a masters in PE - or finish up and look into alternative certification methods in your state. Also, try to get some substitute teaching jobs to get a feel for it and make sure it's what you want to do. You definitely don't need to know how to play all sports, but you can always learn along with the kids while you're teaching them

I have 26 years of teaching experience in elementary PE in the state of Texas. My class sizes average around 45 students per class and on Fridays, I have every single student. My classes last 50 mins and each student gets PE three times a week. My biggest challenge is finding new activities on Fridays to keep kids moving in a small gym. I use DrumFit, yoga, dance, walk-a-ton challenges, stability ball workouts, relay races, tae bo, and cupstacking. Fridays I have four sections at once and this past year, that meant 92 5th graders. If you have any activities you use with large groups, please post them on youtube, if you don't mind. Thanks.

those class sizes are insane in my opinion, but you might be able to modify some of our games and resources to make them work. Check out hula hut relays, station ideas, fire and ice, cross the river - all explained in detail on our site, links to each can be found on our resources page.

Hey there Ben! I am a 19 year old college student majoring in kinesiology in southern California and preparing to transfer from a community college to a university but I do not know yet what my focus will be on, whether its Physical education, applied health, or exercise science, those are the focuses my transfer school offers. While I still am leaning toward becoming a PE teacher, I am not sure how I would coincide with the kids and the work in general. What would I need to do to an internship or get some sort of hands on experience? Also I have been thinking of taking a gap year from college to truly find out if I want to do PE for the rest of my life, if I were to, do you recommend any goals or certifications for me during that year? Also, what does it take to coach high school sports? Credentials? Networking? Experience as a player? Internships? I apply for transfer for my university in 2 months but I feel as if I need more time, what should I do? Thanks
@ThePESpecialist5 жыл бұрын
Usually you don't need credentials to coach at least in my district. As far as experience I would seek out some quality teachers that are near you and go observe them, offer to help out and explain your situation - most people would love some extra help and it would give you a chance to see a few different programs. Also, substitute teaching is a great way to get a feel for it - it's super hard to find a good sub, so shoot an email to the PE teachers you would want to sub for during your gap year and you'll get booked up pretty quickly. You're 19, you've got a ton of time - I think your smart to test things out before you go all in - hope it goes well

I wound up in the hospital. Kids should not be forced to take PE because for some kids it does more harm than good.

Man, sorry that happened to you. That's not an issue with PE though, that's an issue with the behavior management of the other students in your class. Might be a dumb question, but do you think you can keep a sustainable lifestyle as a gym teacher? I hear the average salary is $45k per year, but for yourself, do you feel like you can maintain a comfortable lifestyle with that salary?
@ThePESpecialist5 жыл бұрын
I think that depends on a lot of variables. If you're single and stay out of debt, then yea sure, no problem. If you're married and have 2 incomes, then also no problem. For me as the Father of 3 and the sole breadwinner for my family it wouldn't be possible to live on the teacher salary alone (or at least I wouldn't be willing to do what it takes to cut my lifestyle like that) Which is why I've always had a side hustle going - most teachers do. Ultimately, I think the most important thing is finding something that you love to do - there are tons of teachers out there in the world making it work - sure you're not going to get rich and I wish teachers made more money, but if you love it then find a way to make it work. On the flip side, I know single guys teaching PE and taking the entire summer to travel around, backpack, live in a van, hostel jump from town to town - so it just depends on the lifestyle you want to live and the ability to live within your means.

@@joebolz not really, doing simple physical activity is not at all like training for the Olympics. PE is like simple math every one should know. Being physically literate is different then being a high performance athlete. Just like knowing simple math is much different from being a mathematical engineer.

@@russellfink8091 All I am saying is that for me to run a mile in PE is like you running marathon carrying a 50 pound weight on your back, it would be equally as difficult.

Got any recommendations for my situation? Current junior gonna graduate with a sport and fitness administration/management degree. I would love to become a P.E. Teacher in the state of Florida. Just weighing out all of my options here.

You'll have to either get certified or go through alternative certification in the state you want to teach in. You could call the state department to find out specifics. Or get a Masters in PE with a teacher certification

The PE Specialist Thanks for the info! Was it challenging to find a job fresh out of college in the P.E. Market

@@ES1Baller Not really, there's a teacher shortage right now, but it also depends on your area as well.

Yah prioritize the once a week PE.. realistically all the subjects are pointless. Teach a child to be healthy and if the infrastructure of corporations collapse, they'll survive by foraging while everyone else dies in the empty supermarket waiting for deliveru
