We generally give peas an overnight soak in warm water before planting out. Our 20 years old seed had 90% germination! We managed two small crops of peas last year- 'Debut 149' planted around April 22 in our USDA zone 7a and 'Early Frosty' sown in early August. This year we were too busy expanding the community garden and we missed the Spring pea planting window so we'll sow some peas as the early spuds come out of the ground sometime late in July.

I know this is off-topic, but im trying to show my mom a garden tip that i think i learned from you -- about lightly watering her grow bags, then like 30minutes returning for a full watering, the damp soil helps the water penetrate better. If that was you, do you remember which video? Thanks for all you do, and the way you do it!

I just stuck a compost thermometer in the soil to get a temperature reading. I like direct sow in spring, less pressure from hungry birds too!

Thank you! I have been frustrated by my peas, but now I know I’m planting them too early. One variety that did come up in colder temps (40s) is a bush pea, Patio Pride. I’ll replant my vine peas now that it’s warmer. Thanks again.

I just put up to teepees for my peas. We love snow peas, the golden ones specially. Also growing the purple pod ones.

I'm trying the purple pod for the first time this year. How tall do they grow?

@@wendyburston3132 I'd say 1.5 meters or about 5 feet. They produce a lot of pods. I think they are Sugar Magnolias... Birds also love their color. When tender I use the whole pods for stir fries.

My peas are 50/50 so far. Pre germinated the first lot about 30 peas about 2 months ago. Very good germination. Planted them out in 3 different planters, slugs had a field day. Direct sowed in the gaps, still waiting on seeing any germination for most of those. And we had some pretty goodish weather recently here in the middle of England. Frankly, feeling pretty much peeved off and ready to throw in the trovel today after finding all my cucumber seedlings, which looked great indoors, were absolute duds with no roots come planting out. Feel like crying.

😢 I had the same trouble last year, Ontario Canada. The slugs attacked my pole beans. Reseeded 5-6 times. Just kept putting extra beans in. Finally bought slug pellets and diatomaceous earth. First sign of that this year and I'll do it again. Was it the slugs or pill bugs that hit your cucumbers? I've just started mine indoors. Maybe I'll start a back up plan.😊

@@wendyburston3132 No pests. Sown indoors end of March, repotted once and never been outside until today. Top growth looked fine, albeit very leggy. But barely any roots. Don't know if the husband was heavy handed with the watering. I usually forget to water anything indoors regularly because it's in a different room and therefore out of sight. My bad. Anyhow, re-sowed now and put back on window sill. Can only hope they grow properly now the weather here has finally warmed up. Tho if all fails I might have loads of Strawberries and potatoes 🙏

@@wendyburston3132 Sorry, got sidetracked with the cucumbers. But yeah, bar of slugs munching some of my pea seedlings has no problems. Possibly just poor germination due to a lot of rain.

Thanks, Jeff. I planted a few for as a cover crop to build soil. Believe it helps for my birdhouse gouge as last summer I tried and had a big harvest of the birdhouse gouge best crop yet.

I was planning to sow Chinese snow peas. It will be the first time. Can you put the peas in the freezer if you have too much? How often you should fertilize them and how about the soil keep it moist but not wet? Once a week? I live in zone 10. I know I will need a trellis. It will be growing in a 5 to 10 gallon pot. Thank you and I am trying to grow my own food. An old fart, a blast from the past.

What are your thoughts on using fine ceder mulch in veggie containers? I currenrly use high quality straw. I prefer it for direct sowing peas, but having it in all my grow bags, it gets everywhere. And I'm so over constantly picking shoots of grass that pop up after heavy rain. Also considering coco chip mulch.

Saw your 3 part cucumber videos. I set out trans plants in garden half are growing great . Half are not much bigger than when I set them out. They have been setting fruit. So I remove the blooms, and fruit. What can I do to get them growing?

I direct sowed two rows of peas. Either poor germination rate, supposed to be 80% more like 50% or the squirrels etc dug them out, or the pill bugs got them. I'm seeing a lot of those around.

Hi Jeff! I just realized that I most likely gave my snap peas too much nitrogen 😢 I have beautiful green plants, but NO blooms at all. Any suggestions or is it to late?

Mice get mine. Next year I’m going to try hardware cloth (steel mesh) over the bed. The mice don’t bother the shoots, they just dig up the peas.

I over planted a 4x8 ft bed with peas back around February, had ok germination. They went through frost and loved it. I have picked off them about 8 ish times and wished I had planted more. Early spring I ate the whole pod, the more you pick, the more they make. Then boil in salt water for at least 10 minutes, taste to see if soft enough before adding to salad or just put directly into stew or soup. So good!! 🫛 🫛🫛
