Music of my youth, love him. He has Greek heritage, his birth name is Steven Demetre Georgiou. He sings a line in Greek in his song Ruby my love, which is a Greek dance song.

This is a brilliant performance ! .. "Peace Train" is a good song, but never been one of my Cat Stevens favourites .. However, watching this live version has greatly increased my enjoyment of it .. He is really captivating, with the energy, passion, and the fantastic vocals and musicianship .. Like you, Sue, I've not seen much of his live work before, but this was a real eye-opener !

Great to see you doing the legendary singer / songwriter, Cat Stevens, Sue 👍.. I will never call him Yusuf Islam, as I was totally appalled by his Salman Rushdie comments .. However, I try to put that to the side now, and just remember and enjoy his wonderful catalogue of music .. My favourite Cat song is the hauntingly beautiful "Sad Lisa" .. Other faves are "I Can't keep It In", "Lady D'Abanville", "Oh, Very Young", "Wild World", "The First Cut is The Deepest", "Matthew And Son" and "Moonshadow" .. But even that list, leaves out so many other high quality songs !

@wayne_twentyfive I am the same, Wayne. He will always be Cat to me too. You named some outstanding classics but I didn't know a couple, including Sad Lisa and Matthew and Son. I will have to hear them but he had so many absolute gems 🤩💜

Ahh Sue, you've made my Monday morning so much better with this! My sister and I absolutely adored Cat Stevens, we had a couple of his albums, Teaser and the Firecat, and Tea for the Tillerman, which I still have here. I think we both had a bit of a crush on him too, being like 14 and 15 around the time this came out. His voice is lovely, so rich and easy to listen to, I think one of my all time favourites of his is "How Can I Tell You" - but I love all of his stuff!

I was a teen, and Cat Stevens had many hits. I really liked his music, and I never really considered his music to be political at a time when Vietnam was still going on and a lot of music was political. However, when I came back from overseas, he had changed his name and became a Muslim. I do not remember much music after that.

I absolutely love Cat Stevens He is in my top favorite artists Cat / Yusuf appeared on Concert for NYC post 9/11 and he sang Peace Train ; it was his first public appearance in over 20 years That certainly brought me to tears Since then song has taken on a life of its own and is bigger that the artist himself For me its up there with only 2 other songs Imagine : John Lennon People Have the Power : Patti Smith Cat is of greek decent and spent lots of time there and plays bouzouki as well as guitar I totally understand the comment about the intro A more Greek sounding song would be RubyLove off same album Teaser and the Fire-cat RubyLove not only has a very definite greek bridge but there are verses sung in greek

This song is so touchingand beautiful, I understand why it is one of your favourites. I remember hearing it a lot when I was a child as it was one of my mom's favourites...always playing on the 8 track in the car 🤗❤️

Its funny the Steven Gerogiou picked the name Cat because he has had more than 1 life Maybe not 9 but definitely 3 First : As an amazing pop protege in swinging sixties writing classics like Matthew and Son and First Cut is the Deepest 2nd : In 1969 Cat contracted Tuberculosis and almost died, he spent months in hospital and convalescence of over a year During this time he became very introspective and spiritual and this lead to his writing classic albums Mona Bone Jakon , Tea for the Tiller-man and Teaser and the Fire-cat 3Enjoying great success in 70s Cat was in California and was caught in a rip tide he made a plea and ask God to save him and he would devote his life to God He survived and his spiritual journey and fulfillment of his promise led to his conversion to Islam in 1977 He change his name to Yusuf Islam in 1978 and left western music for almost 30 years Life #4 : Yusuf / Cat has found balance in his life that has allowed him to return to music Sad to have lost him for 25 years and so happy to have him back. More than any other Artist one day I hope to see him perform live

Mr Stevens was a great song-writer. I still remember the backlash he received when he switched to Islam. I love the 1996 Dolly Parton version kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmatoWR3rK51gLs so much especially the different dance versions that she released.

@@playitagainsue Sue it got heavy play in gay clubs in the late 1990s and early 2000s with dance floors. Sold lots of copies when I worked at local bookstore in central NC.
