It's our favourite time of year on our Portuguese Farm. Spring is here and with all of the sunshine and rain our beautiful farm is bursting with wildflower and blossom. We visit our neighbour Joaquim who has invented a new tractor implement to tend to his fields, and I take you on the yearly tour to see how incredible everything is looking on our farm at this time of year.

Yes we have a lot of storks this time of year and they like to catch earthworms to feed their baby chick's. I think Joaquims tilling is helping the birds get the worms 🪱

@@OKportugal yes you are right. This my argument against this concept that farming is bad for the environment. Well, farming practice such a Joquim's operations are highly beneficial to many birds, insects and mammals. This is why it is so important for us all to support these brilliant ancient farming techniques and why you are both a blessing to your neighbours. Farmers are giving up their farms in droves all over the EU. The ridiculous paperwork overload is beyond acceptable now. Many farmers get mental health issues and lose heart due to the awful pressure and unrewarding feeling surrounding farming now. This is why just your contributions to cheering Jouquim, his wife and the other locals on is so important. These farmers are a keystone species within the ecology now and the ecology is now dependent on them. I cite the loss of the "cockney sparrow" when my mum grew up in E.London down many side streets there were still cart horses. Milk carts, Tea stalls were pulled to Football matches by horse. The back street stables were the last breeding grounds for the sparrows synonymous with cities. Sparrows nested in flocks in the eves of the stables, used bedding as nest materials and ate the feed that spilled on the ground. Now House Sparrows in Great Britain are on serious decline. So we all have to factor in how necessary traditional farming of cows and sheep are to our ecosystems to thousands of endemic and migratory species. Thanks for all you do to keep Jouqim farming ;)

Fabuous segment with Joaquim. I'm glad he let you know of his new invention. I wish Portugal and the EU would laud farmers like him and his wife. I love the lush greenness and all the wildflower colors of Spring, too. California gets dry and crunchy like Portugal, too. San Francisco is even geoogically a desert! We mightvthank El Niño for relief from drought! Love how you're so into all of your wildflowers and freshly cut grass. Do you think ornamental gardening could be a hobby in future? Somehow i can imagine you planning a short putting course near a future man cave 😄. Nice one, Ken 😊.

My wife and I decided to visit Capelo’s, yes we agree very good steak and wonderful restaurant. Your videos are a lot of fun and educational. The dust storms also act as a ground fertilizer once it settles. It's believed to carry many nutrients that nourish the earth once it has settled and has been irrigated by the rain. I'm a NO Till kind of gardener though 😊
@OKportugal
@OKportugal 2 ай бұрын
No till / No dig definitely has its applications and works extremely well for them, but not everywhere. A shallow till is the most effective way for Joaquim to remove old weeds, roots and to make a soft planting surface for the seeds in this instance. Especially as hes dealing with very large bits of land between here and the village. I have seen no dig working fantastic in gardens though, and in areas with lots of water :)

The old farmers saying....Gotta make hay while the sun shines. I wonder if he is trying to preserve seeds? The grasses growing so quickly, will set and drop seeds really fast. The seeds are probably a good natural supplement to sheep diet. Or......Cause he's been round the block a few times....He knows the dry weather is coming quick and early. Thanks so much, the place looks wonderful.

This video was a real treat, I loved seeing Joaquim's inventions! He is a classical family farmer, always working, always inventing, always creating ways to improve farm life, smart, resourceful, stewards of the land. We owe our quality of life to farmers - as the saying goes: "Got food? Thank a farmer!" This video brought back beautiful childhood memories of walking through wildflower filled hayfields surrounded by clouds of butterflies - sadly most of the butterflies are absent now, and our grandchildren will never experience that thrilling beauty. We need more people like Joaquim who restore our wildflower meadows as a side benefit of feeding their flocks. I wish it were possible to buy Joaquim's cheese here in the US, there are so many marvelous cheeses made in Europe that we don't get to experience here. Wouldn't it be great if it were possible to have Joaquim's cheeses, as well as the local wines and olive oil exported!

Obrigada

We originally tried to put him with our chickens so he would grow up with them and protect them. They beat him up so he ended up hating the chickens and when he got bigger used to attack them. It made it really difficult to keep them separated and we had to get another goose as they dont like to be alone. Then they started attacking our dogs and Eddie the big Estrela dog nearly killed the goose... so we thought it was best for everyone to rehome the geese. We found a local couple who have a lovely farm and a small flock of geese to put them with and they live over there now. Its a beautiful farm and they are very spoiled :)
