Im in my 70s from Kodiac and the Ozarks. You guys got it goin on. We got a little spread ( reduced down to bout a 100 acres) in the NE Highlands of Washington state. Your video made me hungry. Aggrivating that we're just now planting n u guys are harvesting. I remember 3 cropping years. Growing food up here is difficult. Hardly ever rains and very arrid. Ground is not soil. It's an eluvial slide from the NWT of Canada millions of years ( ? ) ago. I miss farming in the South, but, i have a 35 mile unobstructed 360° pan ( no roads or poles or houses in view. Saaaweeet) so we're in really good shape removed from all the crazy bullshit down in da crowds . solar n wind n wood n mountain spring water and years of supplies on hand any day of the year. Real preppers are allways ready for SHTF. Stay strong and free. Dan n Leslie

LOL!!! My Grandmother was so scared of those worms!!! She would holler every time she saw one as we were shucking the corn. Sometimes my brother would toss the tip of a corncob her way and yell,”WORM!”. She’d holler out again! She couldn’t stand the thoughts of a worm any more than she could a snake. OH, the rows that stuck together! We would just pop it in our mouths on the sly 😋 didn’t need much supper when we were doin up the corn! That’s how my granny did her creamed corn. She used the sharp side of the knife to cut off the kernels and the dull side to scrape the “milk” out of the cobs. She swore by white field corn for her creamed corn, and I must agree because it was the best creamed corn I ever had. That’s all she used in hers, too. Corn, butter, salt and pepper.

I am not squeamish over corn worms either. Every so often I'll be lucky and get to the farm market or the farm stand on years when their BT didnt work and people were putting all the ears to the side with worms in. I asked what he was going to do with all that corn on the side he was going to sell to pig farm and I had intended to feed it to my chickens. He sold me that corn $5 a bushel so of course I try it thinking the chickens will feast but when hubby and I start shucking we realized right quick that most of the damage is only on the end and we cut that bit out like you Wanda and just processed the rest for us. I now actively check and offer to buy any wormy corn. Even the big box store sold me the "bug" corn for pennies compared to regular price(local grown corn not the imported stuff) Sure a few are beyond even my tolerance for critter bites so the chickens enjoy. But it fills the freezer. Oh and we try to rotate the freezer veg/meat but had one pack of corn that must have just been lucky to hid in there it had been packed in 2011 and we found it 2018 decided its vacpacked the worse thing is it won't taste right so opened and cooked it and other than a strong "husk" taste that corn was fine. We try to freeze some on the cob too for the grandkids. They love corn on the cob during a stay hone snow day! Love your channel.
@jjo53754 жыл бұрын
"corn on the cobb on a snow day"..... I'm weeping here! Corn on the cobb is my favorite food in the world! Cut my teeth on it...literally. Mom would eat off most of the corn, leaving a bit here and there, give toddler mee the ear...which I gummed and gnawed at....creating an 'addict' at the tender age of two! : )

Great video. We blanch and freeze corn also. We don’t have the growing space, but purchase it by 52 ear feed bags from a local farm. We cut “whole kernel” with steak knives, just like my dairy farm aunt taught me 40+ years ago. I purchased these yellow plastic corn cutters a few years ago and they just slowed me down. I canned corn in pint jars a few years ago, but it turned a little brown. Maybe because I didn’t add salt. So we went back to freezing it.

Have you thought of getting a Food Saver vacuum sealer? a good one for heavy work will cost about 200, but we use the 2222 series, about $100 for that one and then we invested in 5 packets of 100 pre-made quart channel bags from an online source and after the year we have 200 packets left and have to order more. We use the vacuum sealer to save all of the foods that we pack or repack for the freezer. We do take the foldover sandwich bags to encase pieces of meat or cooked portions before we vacuum seal them to keep any juices from pulling up to the seal. Using the vacuum sealer this way helps to prevent any freezer crystals and freezer burn in the deep freeze. FYI we had some chicken breast from 2010 in the deep-freeze that had slipped down to the lower level, and we used it, we try to use the older stuff first, and it was just as good as when it was first vacuum sealed. Just a bit of info for ya, now a "chamber" vacuum sealer is way more expensive but in that type you can actually vacuum seal liquids successfully

You in the south are harvesting, while here in Ontario Canada folks are just starting to place the seeds in the dirt, if it is warm enough. We had many a late frost right until the day before mother's day. May the 9th we even had about nearly an inch of snow. Yup the white stuff. All gone later that same day. It's getting warmer now, but not as warm as other years.

@claireisacamel4 жыл бұрын
Weirdest thing, but if you cut all the way through the cob, at the bottom, about 1/2 inch up from the bottom of the ear, you can take off all the husk & silks at once - I think it’s because the silks are thicker at the base since they grow up from there, so it’s easier to get a handle on all of them and take them off. No chasing down silks and breaking them all off in 100 pieces when your shucking. Game changer!
