I love the stems. Often by themselves just fresh or in a stirfry. I have also cut them into sticks and pickled them. Very good

Same as my standard pickle dill pickle recipe. I often use the stems and sometimes carrot sticks too. Will take a little longer on the shelf to pickle than cucumbers. I think it’s due to their heavier density but I love snacking on them. It’s amazing what can be put in a pickle. Pea pole do dilly beans, asparagus, zucchini, eggs, beets and many other items.

I L.O.V.E. Broccoli!!! It's in a tie with spinach and Kale for me. The stems make great broccoli coleslaw also. I have a broccoli casserole recipe that I've had to modify over the years that I love making. Super easy and SO yummy but, VERY fattening. LOL True Story. I NEVER ate broccoli till I was 16 years old. The smell of it cooking turned my stomach. My first love forced me to eat some one day at his house. He didn't want his mother to know I hated broccoli. LOL I have LOVED it ever since. I am so envious that y'all got a harvest. I'm 5 hours north and I have grown ONE head of broccoli ever. Between wonky weather, critters and cabbage worms...I have never had been successful. You guys give me hope!!! I can grow the heck out of spinach and kale. But, have a horrible time with other brassicas. Y'all are awesome. Great video!!

I love love and use the broccoli stems. I simply peel the tough outer skin off and cook it with the florets. The stems are tender as can be. You have yourself gorgeous broccoli 🥦 and it’s wintertime! I think I could grow cauliflower and broccoli if I had a greenhouse🦋💜

GORGEOUS Broccoli! But, I can't believe there are actually cabbage worms at this time of year??? They're relentless..... A friend gave me broccoli from her garden and it was FULL of worms.... YUK. I had never HAD fresh broccoli from a garden before. Wanda, I LOVE that HUGE bowl and the color is SO pretty! I LOVE using those little steamer baskets... They work excellently! SO happy you had a nice harvest!!! Love you both!

Wow! You dun it again! I thought I knew it all... and then I learned sooo much from this vid from each of you. Wanda, I always peel the stalks, chop it up, and steam with the broccoli florets. We love it that way. If I end up with extra broccoli, I make a creamy broccoli soup the next day. But, now I know I can do so many other creative things with the stalks. I added this to my Growing Brassica collection of videos, because it's well worth me watching again and again to garnish info. Thanks y'all! The only thing I'd change about this video is to post the planting date of your plants early in the video and maybe how many days it took you to get the harvest. But I'm being really picky. This is already a 5 star video in my book.

Hey, I can put sliced Broccoli in stews & roasts! We blanch then vacuum seal ours before freezing.. no freezer burn :) In about 3 weeks we will be planting lots more Broccoli! (Kansas)

I've got a couple-a-three 1-gallon vacuum bags in the freezer right now...love broccoli! I cook it like turnips, with bacon and eat it with corn fritters. I like brussels sprouts like that too.

Those leftover broccoli stems, can be put into a small glass of water, leave a bit of the top part out of the water (like you do when sprouting a sweet potato in a glass of water to grow slips). And you mist the top of the broccoli stem once in awhile to keep it from drying out.. and you can get that stalk to grow shoots, leaves, and plant it out in the Spring. And get broccoli plants (w/a head start, faster than starting from seeds) growing in your garden!! I really liked how you shredded those broccoli stems with the carrot. I would have never thought to do that. It reminded me of my grandmother saying "Waste not want not"! She said that all the time. And using those stems this way instead of discarding them, is nice.

Good helpful video. I like the way it was divided, picking, cooking and storage. Wanda, I would have thought that soaking the broccoli in salt water would have made it taste salty but then you added more salt when steaming. As you can tell I never prepared broccoli.

The stems are great for juicing. Especially for men. The denser the strm, the more juice. Broccoli and all cruciferous veggies are high in flavinoids etc that support healthy testosterone levels and lower high estrogen levels in men. Especially good at shrinking an enlarged prostate, cancer etc

My brocolli got to be about 4 ft tall! That's another reason to use tomato cages! I blanch and dehydrate some broccoli for future brocolli cheese soup. It's delightful!

you should blanch veggies before freezing. It will help retain a nice color instead of turning dark/black when frozen

You can eat the big leaves too. I cut out the stem and cut them into ribbons and sauteed in butter (or a little bacon grease) with salt and pepper. It's is SO good!

Try planting a few sacrificial plants around the garden to lure the bugs/worms away. I plant a few brassicas around the perimeter and while it's not 100% perfect, it does make a difference for me. When they've done their job, they go to the chickens, worms and all. :) I'm told bok choy is great for keeping flea beetles off eggplant. Will see how that works this year. Hope this helps!

I've given up on growing it in the spring .. as soon as the pinheads emerge, they gobble it up like candy. After the grasshoppers die off, though, I can grow as much as I want.

Overlook Valley Homestead I haven’t tried it yet, but other homesteaders are using floating row covers over the broccoli to keep the bugs off. They say it really works. You might try it instead of giving up altogether.
