Jimi Hendrix, the world's most famous Fender Stratocaster player couldn't have played anything other than a Strat, could he?
In this episode of A Tale of Two Tones, we take a look at the tones of Jimi Hendrix. Famous for mostly playing a Strat however, he was also seen playing a select range of Gibson guitars. Most notably a psychedelic painted Flying V.
Approaching the Tale of Two Tones of Jimi Hendrix slightly differently to previous episodes, Jack takes a deep dive into how these two types of guitars might affect Hendrix's playing style differently and his tone compared to the classic Fender Stratocaster!
As mentioned we have recently taken an in depth look at the development of Jimi Hendrix and his uses of effects and pedals throughout his career. Find that video here: • Board Talk: Tone of Gy... .
We hope you enjoy this slightly different take on A Tale of Two Tones, and leave in the comment section below your thoughts!

For those interested, Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Albert King, left handed player like him, and adopter of the Gibson Flying V. The obvious advantage was unlimited access to the upper frets for left handed players. Although unlike Jimi, Albert King played his guitar right hand strung though. The very first V that Jimi got was not one of the Korina bodied one, but mahogany. This guitar was gifted to Mick Cox of Eire Apparent, an Irish Band who toured with Hendrix. That was in January 69. Hendrix then got another V which he replaced in May 70 with a left-handed model. I was/am a big fan of Hendrix, the reason why I always wanted to play guitar. I have purchased every book about him. If there is only one book that you should read about him it is: -JIMI HENDRIX - ELECTRIC GYPSY by SHAPIRO & GLEBBECK Heinemann 1991- Obviously out of print but I have seen at least one on eBay. Last but not least, Jimi Hendrix only owned and used one left handed Stratocaster, a 1965 sunburst that never saw the live stage.

I saw Hendrix live a few times, including the 'Guitar-in' at the Royal Festival Hall (1967?). I went with Andy Powell and this set was probably influential in Andy deciding to buy a Flying V. This was the best Hendrix gig I ever saw. Hendrix also played a Gibson Les Paul 'Black Beauty' for blues, with the P90 at the bridge and the Alnico at the neck. I also went to the Hendrix gig at the Finsbury Park Astoria. I went with some mates and we crawled into the theatre to listen to Hendrix doing a sound check, including 'Sgnt Pepper's' and 'Summertime Blues' We were discovered by management and chucked out. It was the night of Brian Epstein's death and the actual gig was cancelled. I saw Jimi play in a barn in Luton (in 1968) where he played some of the set, including 'Foxy Lady', on a 60's Strat with a Danelectro neck. He mainly used just a fuzz and a wahwah, using the wah as a boost. At Luton I arrived early and went in when the band was setting up. I walked right up and exchanged hellos but was too shy to engage in conversation. I was surprised how unkempt Jimi looked, his hair had that grey streak, and his cuban heeled boots were out of shape and completely worn down at the heel. A great gig but the sound was distorted by the corrugated iron barn roof! I saw Jimi again (in 1969) at Newcastle City Hall, it was poor set, the last on a tour and Jimi looked tired and couldn't keep his guitar in tune, he eventually said "fuck-it" gave up, and walked off the stage in frustration. Those were the day's!

I remember as if it was yesterday that day in September 1967 when I first heard " Are You Experienced " it changed my perception of music. No longer was the guitar a chordal instrument that was allowed one solo per song , it was now guitar controlling the tune from the first note to that last, RIP Jimi . Another exceptional video Jack, the series continues.

I swear this is the second time I've stumbled on this channel and have been blown away by the playing. I think a Randy Rhoads video was the other one. This guitarist is freaking amazing. When you kick in the univibe, it's just that sound. This is beyond gear demo stuff, the PLAYING from this guy is amazing. Much props, you are inspiring with the tactile and beautiful technique. This truly proves that the sound is in the hands, not the gear.

This series is just about the finest tone, gear and playing clinic available. I hope you would consider a Josh Homme episode. Although it would involve a guitar with different strings tuned down to C, I think it would be worth the effort to see what someone of your caliber could come up with? He has a truly unique approach to a somewhat traditional sounding music, complete with cool (bass) amps, and effects as well as an anthology that has enough different tones to do 3 episodes. Could be great.👍 Cheers from the High Desert, Ca.

"He certainly was pictured a lot with one." Look up Hendrix' performance on the Isle of Wight festival, where he plays his Flying V, one of only two genuine left handed guitars he owned. In fact he was so used to having the pots above the strings that you see him reach for the upper part of the guitar a couple of times and then going "Oh yeah, they're down there with this one."

Someone just listed one of those Dr. Z Remedys on Reverb that lives very close to me. How does the blended volume work? Is there still plenty of head room for cleans? I assume it takes pedals well, and it has a switch that cuts the power in half. Also come with a 1x12" half stack but the cabinet looks pretty big, so I doubt it would be boxy. I usually like Fender style amps but this thing sounds and looks pretty killer. Especially with you playing it!

@@p6x2 Yes, unfortunately I am. I know little wing very well, but what was that heavier riff at the end of the intro inspired by? I don't recognise it, but that was absolutely amazing. On a side note: technically it is not illegal at all to play someone else's song on an instrument because then that's something you produced yourself. It's only illegal to add the original track to a video.

I’ve never heard a stock fender pickup ever sound good, even the custom shop hand wounds. None of them actually have that vintage grit. Lindy fralins are great, but if you really want that Hendrix sound, get the Seymour Duncan custom shop psychedelic pickups. I swtg they are some of the greatest single coils that have that sparkle and grit. They aren’t cheap ($300), but well worth it.

@@PeachGuitars Hi Jack! Tale of 2 tones Jimmy Page? Early tele tones that came from his Yarbirds days....maybe even with the supro on debut Zep record and of course The Song Remains The Same Live at Madson Square Garden film where he had some of the best tones ever in my opinion....maybe it was the KT88 big bottle tubes he had in his Marshall's by then? You have any big amps with KT88's for that glassy Les Paul neck pickup thing he had? I'm sure his tones are much harder to nail down as he had so many. His middle position on his Les Paul was also pretty unique and had a little more character than most middle position tones.
