Actually think about this, that is true Rick will always need Morty and Morty will always need Rick but the reason that Rick doesn't show it to Morty is because of a very simple reason. Rick is said to be the smartest mammal right? And that means he has people always coming after him for various reasons (he's done injustice to them, they need to get something out of him, etc.) And those people may go as far as hurting the people he cares about. But with his nature of always not showing any affection or love to his family, he has no one who he actually cares about that they would target. See, this is why he is the smartest.

It's not certain that it's Morty, it could as well be Rick. Also, in my opinion, this thing looks more like that gadget Rick made in the Interdimentional TV episode, so it could be a Rick/Morty who's watching through the eyes of one of them from another dimension (I'm inclined to believe it's supposed to be Rick, because of the lines "I'm an useless child because mine lives no more", so maybe his Morty died and he connects with other Ricks to see if their Mortys are doing fine).

It’s actually not this upsetting. However, it does get pretty dark. Rick is shown to be a heartless scientist who seems to not care about his grandchildren, but it’s the exact opposite and he really does love them. However, he does a terrible job of expressing it and often insults Morty.

This song just made me smarter, I think. I think I was the only one who didn't realise this theory. The true reason Rick keeps Morty around isn't because his "stupid" brain waves mask his "genius" ones (I mean Morties can be used to cloak Ricks but I don't think it's because they are stupid), but because Morties are the only thing that can defeat a Rick. Morty has become less naive in season three, And actually seemed to pick up on what Rick was doing. Maybe Ricks keep Morties with them to make sure they can never over throw them?

This is old, but I think this video picks up the nuances of Rick and Morty’s relationship. Both the toxic, disgusting part of it, and the beautiful bond between grandfather and grandson. Their relationship, while unbreakable, still has its gross side, and it’s important to acknowledge that. I just wish Rick would show affection to his yellow shirted kid more often.

i love the sparse use of eyes in this i dont know if it was intentional but it seemed like every time rick had his eyes drawn in he was either gaslighting or being possesive of morty, and how morty only had his eyes drawn when he was being subjected to the gaslighting and possesive behaviors, this is evident at 1:23 when rick's line is "a child who would have been dead if it weren't for me" and at 2:33 when rick is being possesive and saying "dance with me, dance with me, together lets dance forever wretched lonly child" while morty confronting him or just having to deal with rick in general. basically i think thats a really neat detail and this animation is just beautiful, i stumble across this every few years and i love it each and every time

He perfectly know people see him as a wicked and manipulative man who never care about anything else than his own being. I just love how perfectly this song fits their relationship! You don't have to dig deep into the show to see them canonically like this, it's basically surface-level stuff. I wouldn't say Rick manipulates Morty? But he kinda does?? He has, on multiple occasions, said that Morty is essentially nothing without him. And that any Morty doesn't have a purpose without a Rick. But I absolutely *loved* the swap to Rick thinking of himself like this! Rick has always struck me as the type of character to despise themself that deeply, and without anyone to keep him from spiralling, he spirals fast... Imo, their relationship is a very odd, borderline (if not) toxic co-dependency, of which Rick would depend on Morty more than he depends on Rick....

My headcanon(probs has nothing to do with the cannon story, but whatevs): This is what happened to Rick's first Morty, before the show began. The names they called Morty were all either Morty's anxiety talking, a bit of his parents, and kids at school..... And Rick. He would say shit when he's drunk or angry or both that he didn't mean, but it would hurt Morty. When it talks about the 'gaurdian' figure in the song, its talking about Rick, as is shown in the animatic. The song implies that this gaurdian, which is Rick, has a sort of obsession over the child, Morty, and doesn't want him to leave. Rick is terrified of loosing Morty, but he, being Rick, doesn't show it outright, and when he tries to cover up his feelings about it, he makes Morty feel 'useless'. One day Rick was drinking and Morty tries to stop him from getting drunk, and Rick hits Morty. That was the last straw, Morty ran away. Rick soon finds Morty. He's dead. The heartbreak is too much, especially with everyone in the family blaming Rick for Morty's death. "Now I have nobody to save me from myself" Morty was always the one stopping Rick from his self-destructive actions, so now Rick has no one. He attempts to commit suicide. He fails.(includes the Vindicators????) He drowns in self hate. "If only I could turn the back hands on the clock." When he gets his next Morty, he swears to himself that he WILL NOT under ANY circumstances get attached to him. Of course, this doesn't work. He's excessively rude during the Vindicators episode because of his experiences with the other versions of them. (Thats all i got..... Wow. That got dark.. whatever. I'll probs write a fic about this now. Don't steal my ideas plz+thx!)

(Sometimes while drawing, I think about your speedpaints and my brain just malfunctions at the sheer HOW DO YOU DO IT SO GOOD! Also I saw your Boats and Birds video and I loved it.) Though I will say, fantastic job. Great illustration and animation. You've been watching fofufofu's Vivi haven't you? And taking the great stuff from that video to heart! Great harsh black and white aesthetic with simple but powerful use of color, harsh, black transitions, stills with the lines having a simple animation loop to them at low frame rate to give it the sense of movement, with blurs indicating a kind of emotional instability within the characters, and a fantastic, absolutely FANTASTIC use of negative space to give the whole frame and video a sense of hollow loneliness. Even a few images are reminiscent of Vivi (especially Morty standing in front of the window scene). Also great choice of song. I've seen many videos trying to use this song, and none of them are that good. You are the first I've seen to genuinely use this video to its full potential. And you have probably made the best Rick and Morty video that is presently in existence. You have handily beaten my now previous favorite Rick and Morty videos. Handily. But back to the analysis of this video. Your use of the song in this video actually forms an interesting story (which I feel that the best fan music videos do) that can explore and even broaden the meaning and characters of Rick and Morty, but even better, it adds a context to the song that wasn't there before! I've always felt that "You're a Useless Child" is largely a song about a mother who hated their child, neglected them, and only regretted it because they died. But here it isn't that Rick held Morty in contempt just for being a child, but rather that his knowledge and pride was keeping him distanced from Morty and made Morty hold Rick in contempt. At the same time it highlights the abusive nature of their relationship. But by making this song about Rick and Morty it truly brings out how childish the singer is. Rick here is proud, possessive, and petty (just like in the show) so actually seeing these traits in the show and video it brings a new meaning the the last few stanzas. I always got the sense from "You're a Useless Child" that the end is the mother admitting that she was terrible to her child because she was treated poorly as a child and so was inflicting her own abuse onto her kid. In the end she realizes that her child perfectly mirrored herself and because her child killed themselves, she should do the same. She needed someone to save her, and in the end, her own child ended up being her only role model. Someone who went the same path she did and had the chance to do differently. To change for the better. But in the end they killed themselves. Here that is not what "I'm a useless child" means. Here it means that Rick never knew what he was doing. He was acting like a child. Petty and cruel. Morty isn't the child. Rick is. And it was this childishness that led to one Morty dying and the other turning against him. Rick is and has always been the useless child and where he thought that he had saved Morty, he had saved no one at all. Not even himself. Morty could have saved Rick. But Morty doesn't need him. Also I think that it's really cool that there is an emptiness and simplicity to Rick in this video that means that the Rick we are following in this video could be any Rick. It doesn't have to be Rick C-137. While this video does imply that the Evil Morty is Rick C-137's original Morty, this Rick could be any Rick at all. (Sure the Jerry disappearing implies that this is the Rick we've been following, the one who made Beth and Jerry divorce, but it could also mean that Morty has excised the part of him that he shares with his father. Namely his compassion and humanity. It especially implies this since this scene is immediately after a scene where Evil Morty turns to the camera (framed in the center like his father was.)) But it isn't the Rick that matters in this video. It's the Morty. Also I like how we never see Evil Morty's eyes. And when we do see one, he's shutting them, which could represent Morty turning from Rick. And it's his missing eye. Also I am very fascinated with how frail Rick's hands are. They actually do have an old feeling to them. Nice subtle little thing. Basically, this video is great. 10/10

At the end, we see someone taking off a headset, looking down at their legs and crying. This could be a reference to the VR game, Virtual Rick-ality, but I think it's more likely that it's a pair of Interdimensional Goggles. I'm thinking that it might be an alternate version of Morty (non-Evil Morty is the only one we directly see in this video crying, so connection?) looking into another reality. Possibly into Evil Morty's life. Eyes in this video make for an interesting motif. The only eye you ever see on Rick's face is his left eye, meaning that Morty is the right eye, which happens to be the eye that Evil Morty has lost. Two things. First: At the end we see a tear falling from the person who is taking the Interdimensional Goggles off's eyes. The tear is falling from the right side of their face. Yk what I just realized? The episode where there were the memory parasites (referenced here: 2:28), specifically when they were in garage and rick was saying he has "a thousand negative memories of his winy ass" (if I remember that quote correctly), was him trying to get morty to kill him. I didn't realize til just now but that was a suicide attempt, that's why he was so confused when morty killed the two parasites and figured out how they worked. I realized now I'm super late to the party on figuring that out but yk I probably also wasn't the only one. Anyway thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
