The sounds of a peacock calling in a jungle in Nepal. The most commonly heard call of the Indian Peafowl (males are known as peacocks) is a loud crowing wail. This sound carries for a long distance in it's forest home. Other peacock sounds include a variety of trumpet-like honks and loud crying calls. They are a noisy species and often can be heard calling at night.
The Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) is often simply referred to as 'peacock' (although more correctly the male bird is the 'peacock' and the female the 'peahen'.)
