The male peacock jumping spider (Maratus volans) must dance for his life. In order to woo a female and avoid being eaten, he performs an intricate dance using a brilliantly colored fan attached to his abdomen. If the female approves, he is allowed to mate. If not, he becomes her next meal.

I love these little spiders. I only ever saw 1 in my whole life and he was in my front yard. I caught him cus he was on something I was moving and he had the most beautiful blue and vivid orangey red on him. He was lovely. I showed my kids then put him back in my garden. It was neat to learn that apparently most male spiders actually *present* themselves for eating rather than being unwilling victims. Because the young AND the mother are going to need the nutrients present, they'll often basically give themselves to the female as a sacrifice. It's neat!

True, a lot do. There’s even some that become paralysed and stuck to the female in a coma-like state after mating. Then she can eat him, or he’ll just starve to death on her. Then there’s some like Male black widows that attempt to escape.

That is really cool indeed. And then some of the females also sacrifice their own bodies when the babies are born because they feed off of her so extensively that she ends up dying too. Both parents sacrifice themselves in the end for the babies. Nature is crazy.

Do the male jumping spiders lose their biological needs to get away from danger after mating or why didn't he jump to safety like during the ritual? If so, could this have evolved for the very reason you mentioned, because the males actually provide a nice little buffet for the next generation, therefore favouring a trait of non-fleeing males? Or maybe he was just unlucky that time ...

probably because he didnt have the energy to. also because when female spiders eat the male, a nutrient source, the babies would be better developed than a female spider who didnt eat the male so there could be a trait that "paralyzes" the male after sex or a female trait that paralyzes the male after sex. its similar to male and female praying mantis relationship, i think.

Right, that creature does not contemplate about sacrifice and future benefits, but you will think about the future and sacrifices of the things you will create, when the technology advances that much. Even though the size of your creation may be as big as a rice or even smaller, nano bots etc.

I read or heard somewhere that new generation of peacock spiders can’t use old dancing moves of their dads as it somehow becomes ineffective over time. So with the passage of time, moves become more and more sophisticated, and some new elements get added making it improbable to use old fashioned dancing styles when it comes to mating
