Only good acting!” This line hits differently when you learn this was the exact viewpoint CBS executives took with the original special back in 1965. Among other suggested edits (like a laugh track), the suits wanted to hire adult voice talent who could then act like children. Schulz fought hard to keep the kids because he thought that would make the production sound more authentic!

I used to have the coffee table book The Making Of A Charlie Brown Christmas (I think published to celebrate the 30th or 35th anniversary of the show’s original airing) but I gave it away to a friend as a gift. It has so much cool and fascinating information about how the show came into being! I also remember reading that CBS wanted to cut out the scene where Linus recites the verses of Scripture because it was too religious, and Charles Schulz said if they cut it, he would pull the plug on the whole project. Also, the girl who played Sally was so young she hadn’t yet learned to read so the director or someone had to tell her what to say and she would repeat it…it explains why her delivery of some of her lines is just a little off! But it’s so sweet!

It’s funny because the person that Schroeder had the most meaningful relationship with was Charlie Brown before Linus took over. Even then, Linus has a tendency of getting snippy with Charlie Brown. Meanwhile, Schroeder has called him “cute” (4/5/65) called him “admirable” (12/8/57) got mad at a girl for pitying him (3/17/63) and left baseball practice to fetch him water (10/3/96, 10/4) when he was having an anxiety attack over the little red haired girl. Yes I read every Peanuts strip, only really skipping the cutesy Snoopy ones.
